In the south, that was kind of a typical ‘getting to know what your life is like’ question.
People got married young and honestly were expected to get married and have children before a career sometimes.
When I was 20-22, my mother, both grandmothers, and several aunts were giving me a hard time and a lot of pressure about how I shouldn’t be worried about school, I should be finding a husband and having kids by now.

In my grandma's poverty-class Irish American lexicon of lesbianism two ladies sharing a house like this would be described as having a "Boston marriage". She didn't think it was wrong, it was just the only context she could muster inthe nineties while I was explaining to her how I had a girlfriend but nobody at highschool could find out so she had to keep it secret. She enlightened me considerably about her own enthusiastically misspent teens in 1940's Boston before she "caught" babies and marriage off my grandpa, she talked about being a wife like it was an incurable disease. She had always encouraged me in childhood to resist the Patriarchy and resist being defined as only a future wife and mother. Grandma Florrie would never have called herself a feminist but she had a big middle finger for men in general so she thoroughly approved when I told her I liked girls, wanted to go to college outside the US and didn't want kids. I'm glad she got to see one of her eighteen grandkids live out her own sacrificed teenage dreams.

The year I was born it was still a criminal offence to be gay where I live. The law changed when I was about 1. When I was 17 and started seeing my partner (who I will marry one day), it was still not yet legal for gays to marry. It became legal, both where I live and in America, when we were barely adults. So, in my 27 year lifetime, it went from a crime, to legal, to people not remembering a time when ppl were even homophobic. It was in the 10 years my SO and I have been together that we got the right to marry. That’s so wild to me.

Did the US have a law against being gay? I ask because normally what happened is a nation would have a law criminalising sodomy. It would apply to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. When people often say "homosexuality was legalised" they mean sodomy was decriminalised. Was that the same for the US? In my nation they never even had a law that applied to women. I was approached by a cute gal about my age (late 20s/early thirties) at a thrift shop one day. I thought at first she was just passing through my aisle, so I tried to step out of her way, but she came straight at me. She said, "Hey, I don't mean to be weird or anything, but would you be interested in getting drinks with me sometime?" and my brain completely shut down for a good few seconds.
I probably looked like I was having some sort of stroke as I frantically tried to come up with a response until I finally (and totally unconvincingly) blurted, "I'm gay."
Thus, I managed to completely waste my get-out-of-awkward-social-situation free card as an actual gay man and ended up stuck trying to convince her that I wasn't lying, and that it was very flattering of her to ask, but that I was just super gay. She didn't look terribly convinced, lmao

Honestly, she was super nice and respectful about it, even if she looked unconvinced. I was just so blown away that I didn't know what was happening. I guess I must have finally nailed my personal grooming routine or my outfits or something because it's happened a couple of times since. And I'm 5'2"! Clearly, there are confident women who don't mind being taller than their boyfriends. But apparently, they also love the gayness or something.

An older woman once walked up and asked, "Are you into interior design?" and when I said yes, she responded, "Yeah, I thought you looked like you would be." 🤣
I think there's truth to the idea that gay men are generally more likely to put work into their appearance than straight men. Honestly, I think that's something we have in common with straight women as a demographic. It just occurred to me that straight guys complain about how much easier it is for women to attract men than for men to attract women, but really, it's usually the people who are trying to attract men who seem to be putting forth the most effort, lmao
As for fujoshi, I'm a huge gay fanfic junkie, so most of my favorite romances are written by women. I know some people are weird about it, like it's unacceptable to enjoy fiction about couples of a different gender than yourself, but as long as people can be respectful and treat everybody as human beings, I don't see any problem with it at all.

Well, that's another reason why I don't get asked out - I don't put any effort because I'm not interested in doing it. Maybe when I'm older and go to college (which isn't far now) I'm a wee teen after all lol.

Guy Thoughts: Man, that looks like my Kindergarten teacher.

    Guy: No, I'm Gay
