During the late 2000s Ryan Howard was the most dominant power hitter in all of baseball. Helping him become the fastest to reach 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 home runs. But after one cold October night his career took a sharp turn and overnight he became one of the worst players in the sport.

Achilles tears/ruptures are almost always a death sentence to an athlete's athleticism & production. Happened to Kobe... went from MVP candidate who DRAGGED an injured Lakers team to the playoffs to having his 3 worst seasons BY FAR to close out his career.
I tore BOTH my achilles, in successive years. Playing in a basketball league (I played in college, then a few pretty lowly leagues after I tore my ACL just before my senior year... lost my chance to AT LEAST get an NBA summer league/training camp invite, and even to play overseas). But those achilles tears? Robbed me of almost HALF my vertical leap, & of a lot of my quickness. Now I have achilles tendinitis for the rest of my life.

His numbers would've been even more through the roof had the Phillies brought him up earlier. He was an absolute monster, it is a shame his career wasn't longer, but Philly will forever adore him along with the rest of that 08 team.. with the exception of Adam Eaton.. still can't believe he got a ring.

I grew up as a huge Red Sox fan. However, Ryan Howard was was of my favorite players growing up because he was a lefty just like me (It's probably obvious my favorite lefty was David Ortiz). Most of this was because I got to see him before the majors at AAA scranton/wilkes-barre red barons almost every game. He and most of the other big Phillies farm system players from that era were absolutely class act. I have countless autographs from Ryan howard, shane victorino, chase utley, Jimmy rollins, etc. Those guys are all great role models. They would stop anything they were doing to say hi to fans and give autographs. Also, shoutout Marlon Bryd who recognized me by name at a totally different spring training game and venue and came over to say hi by calling out my name. These guys were class act and had no ego.
I know this is long, but as a side note, the yankees AAA has taken over here and ever since they do almost nothing for the fans compared to what we experienced with the Phillies organization. I will always root for the Phillies as my NL team and I could never forget how awesome these Phillies guys were. When they won the World series, I was so happy for them. That group of guys weren't just superstar players but also superstar humans. Thank you for this video. Baseball is beautiful

Great video. I'm a Phillies fan. I don't know if not dealing with the shift would have made Howard a Hall of Famer. It would have meant he's have 100 more singles and he wasn't getting into the Hall for hitting singles. I thought after 2009 the team should have been broken up. They kept paying these guys as they got older and started to decline. I thought the Phillies should have not given him the 5 year deal and let him walk and they should have signed Prince Fielder. Fielder was younger, a better hitter, still in his prime and a right handed bat which the Phillies needed. No one could have predicted Fielder would have that neck injury and would have to retire.

if they let him take care of the intial injury this never would have happened. He hurt his ankle sliding into 2nd base on a pick off play and they kept making him play through it during 2010 and his power numbers dropped off then and instead of getting it taken care of he kept playing and putting more weight on it and it led to the achillies eventually rupturing and ruining his career. pisses me off.

Howard had a great start to his career, but even if he was able to sustain that production, he probably would still be a borderline Hall of Famer, because that's how bad he was defensively. Even during his prime years, he was never the team's leader in WAR.

With all due respect to Ryan Howard and what he has accomplished in his career,
What he said on the podcast about " the shift" being why he wasn't getting hits and being productive is straightforward bullshit.
Ryan Howard is a POWER hitter i.e. One dimensional i.e. One Trick Pony i.e. all or nothing swing for the fences you get my point.
If you( your team, the opposing team and the fans) KNOW why the shift is being put on you for a high percentage, What do you do?!?!?
Simple.... LEARN the put the ball in play(singles doubles a triple every now and then)
    Also,
LEARN HOW to hit against left handed pitching
That's why you have the off-season spring training and grapefruit league play to practice and put into play what you have been working on.
Which tells me Ryan(like most POWERE hitters) were complacent if not motivated to change their spots/stripes and yet they wonder WHT certain outcomes in the game happened in the game the way it did

I feel the shift was the worst thing for baseball... it made the game so boring to watch... most of the time, batters would hit into the shift, making games hard to watch.. The best thing they did was eliminate the shift ....Rayan Howard was an elite player in his prime, he's was putting up the same numbers Aaron Judge is putting up now... he's definitely a hof in my book

I’d hardly call him the most feared hitter of the late 2000’s.
    From ‘06-‘09
    Pujols OPS was 1.078 vs Howard’s 0.968
    Pujols had 328 XBH to Howard’s 321
    Pujols had an OPS+ of 179 to Howard’s 146
    Pujols had 1,396 TB to Howard’s 1375
Lets not forget Pujols had 226 Ks to Howard’s 765 Ks 😂
