He explains why he has an agent but not a manager, why illegal music downloading does not concern him, why independent releases and small labels end up stealing as much money from artists as the big labels do, why he has his own publishing company, how he deals with advances and royalty collections, what BMI and ASCAP do, why he still wears a suit when he performs, and much more.
Man what a legend. Very determined and proud, but still very humble.

Remember Ron Carter with Mel Lewis/ Thad Jones Big band at the Village Vanguard monday night in 1969.
He was depping for regular bass player.
The pianist that night just smiled all night with astonishment and pleasure at Ron's musicianship.
One of the smartest, creative musicians I have heard.

When we look at the many ‘classic’ photos of icons , dress code is very vital .
For some one like me who may nit be too mindful about dressing up on my own free time , it’s a blessing to be able to find guidance and recommendations on what to wear rather than for me to try to figure all that out on my own.
I am a musician. And after watching this I’m done playing gigs for free. Thanks Ron.

Ron did some good bass playing with Miles Davis and that is what he is most known for. Jazz has got to be heard on vinyl, reel to reel, CD a physical medium for this type of music is best. I do stream some jazz as long as its mastered properly. Records did fall out of favor for some years but have made a come back. To me the best jazz labels in the biz were prestige,verve, roulette records, and a few others. Blue Note has the best jazz recordings from the late 50's and 60's along with Columbia.

Saw him in Guimarães Jazz Festival for about 5 years. Went to the backstage after the concert to ask him to sign my CD's. Probably 20, most from Miles Davis sessions. He signed all but was not very happy. Wonderfull cincert, by the way.

I think that CD’s seem to, or may be selling more than pop cd’s after the downloading issues.
Let's slightly reframe Ron's demand for a certain fee for 'my services' some. It's not just about performing a gig satisfactorily, but it's about the expenditure of one's time and energy in a certain venue for certain people, but this is even dwarfed by the fact that one's life is being spent too. What is this amount of time worth in terms of my short life? Is it better to put your 'time' out at $30 or $300 per hour? Or $3000 or $12000 for the same gig?
CCNY sure had a stellar music program. Now Patitucci is the bass chair. Still, being taught by Carter must have been a trip, just his stature alone is intimidating.

Jazz clubs are folding like dominos in NYC and the rest of the US. Most are owned by people who love jazz and go bankrupt. Get real.
If you want to make money with music go to law school!

Nothing wrong to be earning money with music fairly and squarely enough to be able to live with dignity and self-respect, like in other professions. I think what Ron Carter points out to these young music students is to be aware of their worth and dignity, to pursue their profession within a path of financial independence and in the end to become financial responsible people. Thanks to him to speak out loud with insight and honestly on this long overdue shady issue that many other in music community consider 'capital' a 'dirty word!'. There are expenses in the music profession like any other profession, or even more so, on resources, investment, maintenance or gear and appearance, knowledge upgrading etc., and artists make a vital contribution to culture and society. Nothing wrong with making a living at it.
Well said Patinya. I think many 'unsuccessful creatives' in general need much more 'financial savvy' attitude and to stop feeling so worthless (myself included). It's not cool for it to be cool not to make any money for the sake of art, especially as there are always plenty of takers off the backs of others in the so called 'entertainment industry'.
