46 & 2 is referring to a theory from this guy called Drunvalo Melchizedek. The theory was that humans would change from having 44 chromosomes and 2 sex chromosomes to having 46 and 2 in the next major stage of our evolution. The theory and whether it's true or not doesn't really matter for the song as the phrase "46 and 2" is just being used as a metaphor for personal evolution and change itself.
The 'theory' is bunk, but it sure did give us a good song. Maybe it will happen, but that's not necessarily evolution. As in, evolution doesn't require additional chromosomes to work. It happens, but it isn't the sum total of evolution. Most people with extra chromosomes have massive problems.
Tool always makes you both think and feel, I think that's why so many people consider their music an experience and not just songs (if that makes sense). You’re used to singers being forward in the mix. We’ve been there. Tool mixes the vocals as an equal instrument. A part of the band. Only forward when the song demands it-the music isn’t a separate element. Even when they play live Maynard, the singer, is staged in the back on a platform near the drummer (GOAT). Bass and guitar are staged in the front. And no to "official" music videos. They're censored, leaving big gaps in the composition. Then visually they're designed to be uncomfortable and thought-provoking. Creepy AF. And so distracting you forget to listen to the song. No hammer required 👁🗨🌀
You should react to the band Psychostick... they're funny as hell but still great musicians . "Because Boobs" or "Do You Want a Taco" are great songs. They've got a ton of music out there to react to too.
