Aaron I love your tastes in books. Excellent haul! And I always attempt to read the spines of books on your shelves behind you. We’ve read so many of the same titles!😊
I kinda just forgot too because there was so much to explore. I've just started reading Endurance by Scott Kelly after seeing it on your channel! Interesting so far.
Glad you liked Scoob! I have several Sarah Waters, but I've only read the night watch which I loved. I used to listen to a podcast called books on the nightstand and the host's favorite book was The Sparrow, she used to rave about it all the time 😊
Oooh Josephine Tey, Solzhenitsyn and Dashiell Hammett - all of those are on my tbr for this year. Just read the first Inspector Grant book The Man in the Queue. Loved it. I’ve read Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter years ago and really enjoyed reading The House of Seven Gables in April. Fabulous haul. Very varied 😊
On Dashiel Hammet, he also wrote The Maltese Falcon, which of course was one of the famous films noir. The Big Sleep is by Raymond Chandler. Humphrey Bogart happened to appear in both films, which could lead to your confusion:) The Thin Man was made into several movies, after the success of the first movie with William Powell and Myrna Loy playing Nick and Nora Charles. They had great chemistry together and a similar sense of humor. People began to believe that they were married in real life. I've read all of Josephine Tey's books but my favorites were the standalones Brat Farrar and Miss Pym Disposes and one of the Grant series, The Franchise Affair. I think that one is a classic. The author Nicola Upson has written a series of mysteries with Josephine Tey as the main character. I've just picked up one that deals with Alfred Hitchcock and Josephine meeting to hammer out a deal for making one of her books into a film; and of course, a murder occurs. I couldn't resist this one, as Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors.
@@KatJack-vl8xj I realised after I hadn't read Hammet before, but I love The Maltese Falcon film, and The Big Sleep, I definitely get all those authors mixed up. I've not seen any films of The Thin Man so that sounds interesting. Glad people seem to love Brat Farrar!
Hi Aaron! What a fantastic book haul! I remember reading Rosamunde Pilcher long ago. I might like to revisit her. I do love the Library of America editions. I just picked up a two-volume set of Ursula K. LeGuin in the Library of America series, and I got them for a great price. Real treasures! I love that you have Katie's book, which looks wonderful. I'm ordering it here in the US but it's going to take some time to get here as it's not been published here. Great collection of books! Enjoy!
I have that copy of The Thin Man too! (And I have the film version on blu-ray, with the magnificent Myrna Loy and William Powell - which turns it into more of an overt comedy. Good stuff.)
@@AaronReadABook It’s a fun film - and I referenced a few lines from it in my song about Myrna Loy! (It’s been too long since I read the book, I couldn’t say now whether those lines are also in the book, but I’m guessing not.)
I’m too scared to video in public too. I always think I want to vlog but I’m just too self conscious to do it. I’m waiting for my copy of Katie’s book to arrive. I can’t wait!
Just found your channel - hi from Australia. Few videos to catch up have liked the ones I have seen so far got some recommendations- I like your taste 📚
I've read Brat Farrar and The Sparrow and thought they were both excellent. I didn't expect to like Brat Farrar much as it's horsey and that's not my thing, but it was very good. The Sparrow is not your traditional sci-fi, very thought-provoking. There's a sequel too, Children of God, which I didn't think was quite as good. They're not overtly religious by the way. The one Rosamund Pilcher I've read was Winter Solstice and I really liked it. I must get to The Shell Seekers. Nice haul, Aaron!
@@cathrussell2426 yeah I thought I had heard good things about both, The Sparrow sounds very interesting. I quite like horse stuff in books but I don't like riding them in real life. Winter solstice seems very popular in my comments!
Another eclectic one Aaron! I haven’t read any of these though I have Solzhenitsyn’s Cancer Ward which feels like you might have to be in a particularly good mood to read 😬
The Sparrow is amazing! (And simultaneously so hard to read!). The year I read it I recommended it to everyone! I was initially attracted to it because of the Jesuit protagonist. (I'm a long time Jesuit fan😆). And it made sense to me that yes, if there was a first contact event in real life and a religious order got involved, it would for sure be the Jesuits. After I read it I discovered there's another book about Jesuits in space, which I haven't read but want to. Werehunter sounds so fun! I added it to my want to read list. (Mercedes Lackey is an author I'd like to read, but I'd only heard about her fantasy series).
I can’t imagine why Werehunter was the cheapest book! 😂I read The Sparrow. Jason and I now refer to it as Jesuits in Space. If you want to read The House of Seven Gables together … let me know. I love Sarah Waters. She has other better books though! 💛
@@booksimnotreading yeah I went and checked some videos I'd seen and I now know it was people's least favourite 😂 Jesuits In Space is a better name haha. I think I'll start with The Scarlet Letter and I'll let you know if I want to go on, is that one horror?
@@AaronReadABook Horror? I don’t think I’d call The Scarlet Letter horror. Most people in America read it in high school and hate it, but I had a really fantastic English teacher that year and I ended up reading twice then. I look forward to what you think. 💛
