  • Sumo wrestling dates back 2000 years and originated in the Japanese Shinto religion.
The Sumo bout represents the struggle between yin and yang.
It is enough that the masses should pleasure at watching the spectacle, and yet its inner significance shall not escape the initiated. -- Goethe, (18th c. German poet and writer)
Dohyo Festival (Opening of the square house)
    土俵祭「方屋開き」
    Since the beginning,
When Heaven and Earth were first divided,
    There has been a contest
Between light and dark, Yin and Yang.
That which is clear and light
    Becomes yang and ascends.
    This is called “victory”.
That which is murky and dark
    Becomes Yin and descends.
    This is called “defeat”.
The nature of victory and defeat
Lies in the nature of Heaven and Earth.
To take part in this contest
    is to be human.
