You are absolutely correct. Folks should not compare, because THERE IS NO COMPARISON! NONE! Angelina crawls out of her body and in to this cover, all while reading the lyrics at the same time, and produces a masterpiece, with just a guitar, mike and her voice, no studio enhancement. Unbelievable.
Angelina is a master at phasing; she has an innate feel for the music. It part of what makes her covers so special.

She’s primarily a jazz singer so sings both in front of and behind and on beat depending on the emotion she wants to convey. Heavenly.
This was the 1st take of this song in a spur of the moment performance. Ivan Mendez, the guitarist has heard her sing many times but he was hearing this song from Angelina for the 1st time. He said in an interview that the hardest thing about playing for Angelina is maintaining his concentration while being blown away by her vocals. He said the very ending of this song was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard. And yes, I prefer this totally raw, off the cuff version over Rihanna's highly produced studio version. Angelina didn't need to sing it naked in a bathtub & she never will!
I know, Room, it's hard to imagine that a young girl could hold her own with the greats, but she does....time after time. And she does it over many genres. AJ really is a special talent.
This casual 'at home' jam session which was on the 'spur of the moment'
with her guitarist friend Ivan, it quickly becomes evident that even though
she has to read lyrics off a tablet to her side, she's able to sing and arrange
this song to a level that has far more emotion laden penetration to the listener
than Rhianna's original hit song.
It is no sign of disrespect to the original artist to say that Angelina’s version is better. Angelina does that consistently. Even though you are impressed with what you’ve heard from her, you’ve only scratched the surface. For me, acoustic Angelina is the most mesmerizing, most devastating. Her raw voice makes you feel every word of the lyrics.
As much as I love her version of Stay, there’s one that’s even better. At the same age (12), with the same accompanist (Ivan), Angelina gives us her take on Adele’s beautifully written song, A Million Years Ago. Adele is great, but she does not have Angelina’s vocal tools or her ability to interpret lyrics. There’s no way to choose a best Angelina song because she covers so much different musical territory, but her acoustic cover of A Million Years Ago is just staggering the first, tenth, or hundredth time you hear it. She actually made a few miniscule bobbles in this, and it's still a masterpiece and done in just 1 take... Magical.
Not that I'm saying that you're wrong but could you point out those minuscule bobbles for me. Angelina is only human and does make mistakes on rare occasions but sometimes people confuse her artistic choices for mistakes.
@@todradmaker4297 @5:47 I think she mean't to say "It's hard to know" and she tripped up slightly and pronounced "Tis hard to's know" The S on end of "to" is barely there but it's there and that phrase sticks out slightly each time I hear it. I think it pushed the temp off just slightly too. But still a great recovery.
And I used to think, at 5:32/3 she almost didn't get he right word out on time, but now that I relisten... I don't know if I believe myself anymore. But it always seemed not what was intended. Maybe it's her quick recheck to the left her that fooled my mind... Or maybe I'm right. But I can certainly be wrong on that one.

@@jonathanfielding7387 I do believe that it was an intentional phrasing choice at 5:32 however she may have messed up the words a bit at the 5:47 mark but memorising lyrics has never been one of her strengths. She will often have the lyrics on a music stand for her live performances or on her phone for recordings but she has dropped lines before. The musicality of a song comes naturally for her but the words sometimes fail her. But like you said, this live recording is a true masterpiece.
@@todradmaker4297 Near the song's beginning, she sings "hot-heated believer" instead of "hot-headed". Some words, she just doesn't know: like "sewed" in House of the Rising Sun; "stealthy" in What Is Life and a couple or three others. I find these mis-steps make her even more endearing.

Angelina is a beautiful young woman with an ability to reach into the innermost depths of your mind on a level with what is known as a "shaman". AJ makes one feel her words and sounds. In the past we may have felt a similar sensation with maybe one song from as artist, but AJ encompasses the ability to conjure up this sensation with every performance. There is a synergy between her looks, sounds, and gestures, and her abilities to activate your senses, therefore; just seeing a picture of her is enough to bring tears to one’s eyes, we are indeed, Angelina's Angels.

As for diction, Angelina creates harmonics that are hypnotic with her vocals that cause our bodies to resonate, and to achieve this it is impossible to pronounce each word, and I would not change anything about this genius, you don't mess with perfection. A number of very good vocal coaches reacting to Angelina asked the question; how does she do it? They all came to the same conclusion; you can't teach what Angelina Jordan has; she was born with it. AJ, don't change a hair on your head, just keep doing what you do.

That was a very sensitive microphone she was using there. That what I have heard some music producers say who really know something about those things. A spectacular rendition from her. This was one of my personal favorites from her at the beginning of my Angelina Jordan rabbit hole. Later there have been many others. But this one hit me immediately. It's so perfect.

Have you seen 'Million Years Ago' yet? It's around this time and she does it similarly somewhat. Just absolutely wrecks me. Same duo, reading the lyrics while singing again, and defeating all my defenses forever more. Her breath control seems op to me. Not just in a general sense either, but it feels like she can ride a fine line of almost effortlessly digging so deep it's almost too deep and uncontrollable, but skirting the edge and mastering an almost painful or aching or quivering sound. Like it hurts or she's tired. I don't know it's not something explainable really. But she always has that flavor and depth edge from it.

So Angelina at 13 kills this with all the heartache and nuance the song demands. Personally where she chooses to alter the vocal phrasing and tone makes mebprefer this to the origional.

I will say that for me, this is better than Rihanna's version (and it's not even close). Second, as you can see in the video, Angelina is reading the lyrics from a phone or tablet to her left. So, not only was this done in one take, it was likely the first take (or at most a second take). Yet it's stunningly beautiful, even compared to Rihanna's original recording (which was a composite of many takes done in a studio, with whatever post-processing was applied). Finally, remember that Angelina was just 12 years old here!
You are right about it’s all about tone.. At this age she displayed some of her most beautiful tone… Let me suggest a couple others from this period where her tone is otherworldly.. “ Born To Die “ by Lana Del Rey and Million Years Ago by Adele..

Whenever we see Ivan Mendez playing guitar for Angelina, we know it was 2018 so she was 12 years old.
