  • Today I will be turning acetylsalicylic acid into salicylic acid with an ester acid hydrolysis. The purpose behind this is to then make methyl salicylate also known as wintergreen. This video method was given to me by a reddit user who goes by UC235.
Here is the guide that I used to make this video.

I ground up baby aspirin and mixed with goodies powders… then I washed once with isopropanol, then I added to an arbitrary amount of water. I put this in the microwave until boiling taking it out to swirl around here and there. The I put a splash of HCl from Lowe’s into it. Probably almost triple of what you used per my volumes. And I used way less powder too. I swirled this mixture for like 4 or 5 minutes and crystals started forming just like yours. I poured through a coffee filter. Then washed it with several rounds of tap water. I dried it while in the coffee filter with a blow dryer in about 3 minutes and knocked it out into a jar of clean water, and swirled around. Poured through a new filter. Poured a bit more water through it. Folded the filter and squeeze it with a few paper towels. I hit it with the blow dryer for another few minutes then sat it in an empty planter on my porch. It was very hot and sunny yesterday and they were dry by the evening. Looks identical to yours. I’ve since made and salve or ointment or poultice or whatever from it and tea tree oil to combat yeast overgrowth on my skin. I can already see the difference. I was not concerned about starches being left over lol. Tea tree oil alone was not helping

This definitely would work as an anti inflammatory but that is quite the backyard method to do so!
Always just be as safe as possible!
      Still really neat though

I have since bought some aspirins and blew the dust off my round bottom flask and reflux condenser, did the procedure a bit more book standard and it appears to be the same product, refluxing was very unnecessary as reaction is complete with just a minute or two of boiling. Did the whole melt test for purity, it’s within range. Though I should probably compare that against acetylsalicylic acid- melt points could be close to same and just crashing precursor out along with salicylic product. I think the excess of HCl takes care of that though because it makes a lot of acetic acid for sure. Just heat til it begins to boil much differently; if that makes sense. I also made mint smelling stuff with some of it by washing afterward with ethanol and isopropanol

Great video! There are quite a few salicylic acid synth videos using the base hydrolysis, so glad to see someone demonstrated the acid hydrolysis method.
And I just found your channel - Subscribed (with notifications). Please keep uploading awesome videos :-)

Thanks man! I was thinking the same thing!
I am working on a few short videos and 1 long video on further caffeine extraction from different coffees currently. Thank you for the support!

Hi Preston, greetings from Bundaberg, Australia. Love the videos mate. You sure are well versed about things. I have a question about extracting fragrance from flowers, can I flick you an email? Cheers, Russ.
