During their years of domination, strategy has often been Mercedes' weakness, allowing for Red Bull to beat them a few times per season. This is what makes the current Reb Bull team so scary: they are the best at everything: car, reliability, tire wear, strategy, pit stops. I can easily see Max win 15+ in a row

    • @MKhrome

He has 15 top 2's in a row already, with 13 wins. 1 seconds place was due to a team error in qualifying, and another was due to a setup error during the race.
He's also already had a chance for 9 in a row if not for another qualifying error by the team in Singapore last year.
Only Brazil last year looked weak on multiple fronts for Red Bull during that entire streak.

yep. agreed. strategy and luck. even with inferior car, max, seb, charles, daniel and other can stole some wins from the dominant merc in 2014-2020 with even a little bit of luck and decisive strategy call. the most recent example i think like monza 2020 where luck and blunder enabled a midfielder to stole the wins from lewis
this is not the case in current season. even with some wild circumstances that could mix the grid up, max still win. monaco, sprint in spa and zandvoort for example. with wildly changing weather, max still win. that's not the case with lewis' dominant era

I agree. This insane level Red Bull are currently at is definitely BECAUSE of the Mercedes dominance. They didn't always have the raw pace due to their crap engine most years and so instead focussed on aerodynamic excellence and operational perfection. Now that they have the fastest car too, no-one can get close. They, as a team, make significantly less mistakes than the other teams, have the fastest pitstops etc., and it really is on the other teams to not only create a faster car but also to become far less sloppy operationally. Even with a similarly fast car (think Leclerc at the start of 2022), all of the other teams would currently drown over the course of a season, as Ferrari did.

What makes Max's win streak so impressive is that, not only is it obviously the highest ever, but he's had to overcome a fair bit of adversity like starting P9 in Miami whilst his teammate was on pole and starting P6 in Spa which is stuff that Vettel didn't have to deal with. And yes he had the fastest car but so did Checo who started ahead those two races and I think people underrate Checo a bit because Max is doing a number on him. Whilst Mercs dominance during that period is unquestionably there was always an issue. During the period where the merc was clear Hamilton could easily have got 10 wins on the bounce he had class teammate in Rosberg to fight with. Then when Rosberg was out of the picture Ferrari was close enough to fight for race wins and even red bull could fight for wins. Whilst the Merc was dominant it was not as bullet proof as the current red bull. That merc car always had specific tracks where it just seemed slower for one reason or another.
Also another huge factor is reliability. A couple of years ago assuming there may be mechanical failure or issue at some point wouldn't be outlandish. Present day mechanical failures (Unless you're Alpine) are out of the ordinary. Particularly from the top teams. You'd need either a perfect storm of good reliability or a car so good you can turn down the engine whilst still being the dominant force on track.
A month or so ago I compared this current although shorter era of max dominance to Lewis' and found that there were more different race winners from different teams during Lewis' era over the course of the first five rounds of the season. So this Red Bull + Max Package with no teammate and no teams able to develop a car that's even close is just something else.

He was built and moulded to be a champion from a young age by his father. No other driver had this type of training, and on top of the talent, it is unbeatable. I genuinely think only prime Michael Schumacher would have a chance to beat Max in the same car)

    It's simple, really.
From the McLaren days, for every win Ham had, Vet, Web, Alo, Mas, But had atleast 5-7 wins combined which never allowed him to build a streak.
From the Rosberg Merc era, for every 5 wins Ham had, there were 2 Ros wins, all hard fought.
From the Bottas era, for every 10 wins Ham had, Bot, Ric, Ver, Vet had atleast 4 wins combined, which is quite a big interruption for a 10 win streak.
I'm a Lewis fan, I won't deny it so my opinion might be slightly biased.
Ever since last year, max and the car are performing at a level where no one can deny him a victory. Ferrari is Ferrari, merc takes 1 step forward 2 steps back in development, McLaren and Aston are peaky in terms of performance because the cars are very track specific while Perez has mentally checked out after 2021 abu dhabi. The average gap between max and Perez is huge and it's all because of skill issue. RB doesn't even need team orders because max is clearly playing the field on 0 difficulty. He is just that good.
Now give the grid 5 RBs, one to max, Alonso, Hamilton, Norris and Charles each and watch how his 10 win streak becomes a dream because while he may be getting the better of them usually, 10 wins in a row would be clearly impossible as the others are just that good too.
No matter how much Hamilton haters deny, Lewis did have strong competition and was on his toes for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021. I can say that yes, 2014, 2019 and 2020 weren't that big competitively and Lewis could just lay back and relax which he did.
Max doesn't lay back and relax. No matter how many times he says he is not chasing records, the way he drives clearly shows that his performance on the track matters most, even if the championship is wrapped by the summer break itself. He will not leave space, he will not make mistakes. He will push himself to the max (pun intended). We can look at 2022 Brazil for example where he had nothing to lose by conceding a place to check and give him a helping hand in the championship for second place but he wouldn't do it. Even if it was for a single point!
It's a beige flag for me, I respect the determination and drive but sometimes he can be a bit too much, that's just my opinion.
Hence, it's all down to the driver. Hamilton will lay back and relax if he sees that his championship is wrapped up and he has no reason to not let Bottas by from P6 to P7 if he was in that situation. Max isn't like him. It's just the completely opposite personalities colliding.
The fanbases will ofcourse make a big deal out of it and everything, but I feel Lewis just doesn't care about this record enough, he cares about the 8th more and that's what he chases.
I respect Lewis' decision to not care and give a damn and I also respect max for caring and having that grit until the last second of the last lap of the last race.

Yes, the races pre 2021 that max and other drivers won were because they had similar, if not better pace than the mercs but the same can be said for some of the races this season as well. Lets also not pretend checo is a bad driver, he was matching if not outpacing max in the two races he won this year; what changed was max using the Baku race as a huge free practice session to finetune his car and since then, he's always been very comfortably faster than Sergio. Even as a Verstappen fan I would like actual competition. But I disagree on the sporting regulations failing. Since the new rules all teams except Red Bull have come way closer to another. This season we have seen Aston Martin, Mercedes, Mclaren and Ferrari as the second team. I didn't see that in 2015-2020. It's just Red Bull that ahead. And while I believe that Peres underdelivers with that car, he struggles an awful lot. So there is also the Verstappen factor. Not that RB doesn't have the fasted car, but Verstappen makes it look worse than it is.

One thing I remember about Max is how he prepares his car. His car is purposefully oversteery, very heavy in the front to make it very responsive and agile and then he dances with the car through the corners. No one was able to control a car with his setup(not even his father likes it when they drive in a team). So I'm not sure if someone would be able to beat him in equal machinery, if he's this different than others in a sense that he makes the car be on the edge of its performance all the time.

      @ab8jeh 10 місяців тому

Just to add, the changing point was 2012 for many drivers. Tyres were fragile as heck then (Maldonado even won a race of course) with Hamilton lamenting on the radio he couldn't drive any slower, and Vettel driving like a grandma. That put pay to really pointy cars that would mash rear tyres. I think Hamilton changed at that point, and once the tyres became more durable he never quite got that pointy driving back for the reasons above. Interesting. Also interesting is that Alonso drives completely differently to these two!
