Model railroading in Canada: Rail transport modeling at its best! All aboard in TT scale!

  • Once again we learn that rail transport modeling is an international matter, especially when German model railroaders build a Canadian model railroad layout. Furthermore, the special feature of this model railroad layout is the rare scale, namely TT scale. The German railway enthusiasts Helmut Müller (father) and Michael Gruner (son) have created a beautiful model railroad layout of Canada. Their layout in TT scale focuses on the transcontinental railway traffic between Canada and the USA.
    The model railroad layout depicts the landscape around the “Connaught Tunnel” of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The stone galleries and wooden bridges, better known as trestle bridges, which are common for rail transport in the Rocky Mountains, were reproduced in great detail. For landscaping small stones and many natural materials from Woodland Scenics were used. The TT layout includes a saw mill, a large steel bridge, a port with ships and an industrial area. There are also locomotives, freight trains and passenger trains, which are wonderfully aged and weathered.

    This has to be one of the most detailed model railroads I've ever seen. I notice the sides of the rails are painted brown to simulate rust. Only the railhead is shiny. just like a real railroad. Amazing attention to detail.

    From my understanding, TT is 1/120 scale.
    That's a little bit bigger than N scale. I have been model railroading for about 40 years and I have never seen American style models in TT scale until now. I would have gotten into TT scale if I had known they were available.

      Rokal of West Germany made some US outline equipment in the late 50s to 60s. Santa Fe F7 models were the ones I remember.
      TT was pretty much invented in the US about 1946 by Hal Joyce (I think) of HP products.
      All expensive when new and did not catch on well enough to be widely available now.
      Likley some HP TT and Rokal TT on the tube.

      if you ever been to Canada, you would know that random huge boulders are relatively common in certain parts of the country, they were left there when the glaciers of the last ice age retreated. Very cool 😎 layout, wasn’t aware these models are also available in scale TT.
    Considering your vids always show layouts to the in-depth of detail, I would humbly appreciate and recommend you also add some shots of the different overviews, or even better a short glimpse of the track plan.
    Love your videos. Think your shots are outstanding amongst other channels. You truly attempt to show these layouts in their beauty and with a feel for for the shown perspective. Like foreground and background fully encapsulated inside the frames. From that ‘viewpoint’ I can understand you would prefer to not show the overviews. I do understand they can be visually disturbing.
    Nevertheless, for the comprehension of the viewer, it might be nice to just lift up the veil a tiny bit.
    Overall, very happy with your coverage. Really enjoy your installments, on a regular basis.

    • @pilentum
      @pilentum  2 роки тому +1

      There are two aspects: On the one hand, I really don't want to destroy the illusion of a beautiful miniature world by filming ugly background walls or wooden edges. I would do that if I were filming an overall shot of the layout. On the other hand, I usually film the layouts at public exhibitions. Because of personal rights and data protection in Europe, I cannot simply film people standing in the background of the layout and then publish their faces worldwide on the Internet. I would have to get written permission from all the people if I filmed them.

    Hello from Canada. Nice video. What’s missing is the overall layout. I don’t know whether the builders here ever visited Canada, especially the mountain division of the Canadian Pacific railway. The Connaught Tunnel is more than a century old and was originally double-tracked, until CP began building larger freight cars. The tunnel is located in the Selkirk Ranges of the Columbia Mountains (no, not the Rocky Mountains, which are located east of the Columbia Mountains). The Selkirk ranges are rugged, snow covered during the fall, winter and spring seasons, and steep, reaching up to 3500 metres in elevation. The vegetation is predominantly dark spruce trees. Hardly any deciduous trees. The valley where the rail line passes is narrow, and there are snow sheds. Not sure what city the port is situated. Vancouver? Port Moody? Although this model railroad does not accurately depict the Conaught tunnel area, it’s still very nicely done.
