      Me three. If you'd faced it you would have prepared it as a possible faceplate for a future project. Don't ask me what because I'm not clairvoyant but knowing this "hobby" there's always more than one way of doing something.

    Drill some circles at the end of your horizontal flex cut so the cylinder doesn't crack from repeated flexing?

    I would exclude the grub-screw, for if it slips, it would damage the spindle seriously. Rely instead of the clamping-force alone.

    I am wondering why you did not use your new Vevor weld positioner to weld the pipe to the plate.

      I was thinking the same thing. The weld positioner would have made welding the pipe to the disk easier.

      Do the jaws that came with it open up far enough? He probably hasn't fabbed up any extensions to bolt to the jaw tops.

    I would suggest putting a stop drill hole at the end of the cur across the diameter, in use that will be a stressed hinge under cyclic load nice place for a fatigue crack to propagate from. Too late now, but hopefully the amount of use the part gets wont be enough to be an issue.

    Nice design and build. However, knowing how I am, I would have had cut the face to true it up as well. It looks wonky with the face run out to me. But since it isn't my project, if you like it as is, that's all that matters. Thumbs Up!

      He said he wanted to keep the current face finish - it looked like it had a nice old-timey patina. Authentic is more important to Keith than irrelevant accuracy.

    if was makeing the drive plate i would bore the face plate center a little bit biger then weld the plate to the pipe on the iner then re machine it

    OK Keith. Give the W series tools and inserts a go. They're brilliant for interrupted cuts.
    However!... every time you use the plate, it's going to be waving about. For the sake of another two minutes machining you could have faced off the outer side and produced a beautiful looking piece. At some point you may need that outer face to be perpendicular to the machine rotary axis.

    If you use a 3/8 th drill for the first hole, you can easily follow it up with a 2” drill and skip the others.

      3 drills for 1 hole, a waste of time. If you grind a split point on the 2" drill, it wouldn't even need a pilot hole. Has worked for me and the old German tool maker I apprenticed with.

    Another way to make the hole in the plate would be to use a hole saw. You would have a 1/2" thick slug that could come in handy for some future project instead of turning it all into chips.

      Brian said he could machine that part with no problems, but Keith didn’t give him the chance (yet). I think Keith wants to use that nice looking HBM on it, can’t hardly blame him either. If that doesn’t work than Brian can probably have his way with it.

    PS You should have used your positioner to do the circular welding, and what about a counter weight for clamp ears.

      Keith said he wanted to keep the original surface (mill scale) on it, probably to make it harder to form rust. If he ever needs it flat he can make it flat.
