It's not that they can't (their scientists clearly do use it) but most won't. With only minimal effort, it's pretty easy to do rough estimate conversions. e.g. 1 kg is approximately 2.2 lbs so saying 1 kg is 2 lbs gets you in the ballpark.

I can absolutely hear the difference. On board mic tend to sound tinny and echo. I have several Rode microphones and I love them. They have fantastic sound quality and warmth.

there definitely is a difference between the mics. The on-board seemed more "shallow" if that makes sense. It seems the road mic (I believe that's what you called it) has more range/depth to it

dude i totally hear the difference in the sound when you added your rode mic. im using my favorite AKG headphones (512), granted they’re plastic and don’t travel well but the sound is amazing on them. it was a huge difference listening to no mic to rode mic.
Haha, of course not an FAA permit for AU - but in general, he's headed back home at this point, just wondering if he's snagged a permit. I just got mine, wasn't too hard, and I can do all sorts of really cool stuff, legally, and not have anyone spaz out.
Just self study. Review the boilerplate PDF's that are available regarding the regulation, and find someone that knows how to read a sectional chart, and go through the supplement manual, and you should be ok. I only got tripped up on the sectional chart stuff with some overlapping airspace issues, but a buddy of mine is a pilot and walked me through a couple of the examples and it clicked - some of the icons aren't as obvious as you might expect them to be. All in all, I finished with an 82 and it took me 28 minutes, with just two afternoons of prep. HMU in a pm if you want some links/pointers.
I'm a sound engineer. Rule #1: When you're going out in the field, ALWAYS bring spare microphones and other stuff! Murphy's law on A/V equipment: if it's going to fail, it's almost never during a sound check, rehearsal, etc; it's ALWAYS at a crucial moment during a gig! (or in this case, during a vlog recording.)

Haha, of course not an FAA permit for AU - but in general, he's headed back home at this point, just wondering if he's snagged a permit. I just got mine, wasn't too hard, and I can do all sorts of really cool stuff, legally, and not have anyone spaz out.
Did you do the course or just study up on stuff?
Just self study. Review the boilerplate PDF's that are available regarding the regulation, and find someone that knows how to read a sectional chart, and go through the supplement manual, and you should be ok. I only got tripped up on the sectional chart stuff with some overlapping airspace issues, but a buddy of mine is a pilot and walked me through a couple of the examples and it clicked - some of the icons aren't as obvious as you might expect them to be.
All in all, I finished with an 82 and it took me 28 minutes, with just two afternoons of prep. HMU in a pm if you want some links/pointers.

I'm a sound engineer. Rule #1: When you're going out in the field, ALWAYS bring spare microphones and other stuff! Murphy's law on A/V equipment: if it's going to fail, it's almost never during a sound check, rehearsal, etc; it's ALWAYS at a crucial moment during a gig! (or in this case, during a vlog recording.)
