I'd love to improve my grip strength but had trigger finger in both hands in all fingers from repetitive weight lifting. I had both hands operated on, and the doctor said I could go back to weight lifting. But there is a 5% of trigger finger recurrence even without weightlifting. Is it safe for me to do grip strength exercises? I use metal hooks to do most pull exercises because I didn't want to put more stress on my tendons and result in recurrence.
When resting between squat sets (3 mins), I fit in dead hangs and sometimes will hang on the barbell in the rack with my feet and alternate hands (like a climber resting on a route), slippy bars are great as they really increase the intensity without trashing skin. I do climb so I'm always trying to fit grip training in at every opportunity. Overhand grip deadlifts are a good stimulus too, go strapless on the day until you can't.
Finger strength is different from others form of grip strength, for those who dont climb, look up the terms but pinches arent translative well to crimps and slopers (which obviously dont translate well to each other) and dont get me started on pockets. grip strength is much more complicated than its said to be.

Surprisingly no. Climbers have to work specifically to train this kind of grip strength, it doesn't come from climbing itself. He's been consistent on that hangboard for years to get that kind of strength.

Worth mentioning that the type of finger strength used when climbing isn't the same as actively holding onto something. Rock climbers generally hang more onto their tendons then the muscles, specifically in crimps/pockets such as on smaller edges*, as seen in the video.
Sometimes videos like these come along and make my mind go back to childhood and put things into wild perspective. My childhood home has a particular mulberry tree that I would climb every day and then just hang from my left hand while I picked and ate every berry I could reach with my right, them move to another spot and repeat. I'm pretty sure that just by switching hands every few minutes I could dead hang until I passed out from hunger or sleep deprivation.

Odd is a legend in strength circles for his grip strength. Those Rolling Thunders he's hanging from are 2.5 inches around and like to spin like a greased wheel when there's any weight involved, so that's how tightly he's squeezing them. And I'm not sure if you caught it, but that deadlift he did was also done on a 2 inch square bar. It's a square axle bar used in some strongman circles. The man has a stronger grip than most people half his age, even those in the strongman scene specifically.
