Dude you are awesome. I followed your cart to a T except I added a 12" 1.5 and a 10" 3 for a shifter bracket plus extra brackets and hardware. $268 shipped to my door in 2023. Everyone kept saying not to go DIY it doesn't save any money.... Yeah it does, it's $110 cheaper than a Rigmetal base. And over half the price of an ASR 3. The rigmetal isn't $110 better, especially without a shifter bracket. and the ASR3 isn't $300 stronger or more customizable.
Thank you so much man! I'm glad I could help! I recently recreated the rig I designed for myself for around 400 dollars, I'm thinking about doing a build tutorial on it but I'm not confident people would prefer my design over the more commercial designs that are available for a similar price...but these affordable rigs I designed are cheaper and good enough for most people I feel. I might try to make this build even cheaper in the future if I can figure out a way to do it.
I ordered 3 extra brackets so 6 more hardware too. That was for the shifter mount. It’s plenty secure but can always add more brackets to the other side to make it stronger.
Thanks so much for sharing the video and design, this saved me a ton of money! It's brilliantly simple, especially the wheel mount, very clever! I've been using this as a wheel stand with the option of upgrading to a full rig in the future by mounting a seat. If you go this route I recommend getting longer vertical stands ( I went with 31" ) so the wheel is at a good height in a normal chair. I also went wider (20" instead of 17") to accommodate a chair inside the rails. I also recommend getting extra brackets and bolts as I needed some to mount my pedals. You'll want end-caps as well as the ends are very sharp, managed to cut myself a few times putting it together. This will cost extra money, but not bad, the final cost was $250 including shipping and sales tax. Absolutely worth it, better than any wheel stand on the market! This design is super stable, feels solid, and is easy to modify and configure to your needs. Thanks again Douglas for posting this, there's no way I would have done this myself without the video!

Thank you very much! I placed my order from tnutz today. Also I was able to save a bit of money buying hardware off of amazon. Those corner brackets can get pricey. I added some modifications for a higher seat position/GT style (4 7in and 2 more 17in).

I feel maybe I’m not the person most rigs are designed to fit, so custom might be the way to go. Unfortunately my money tree got blown over, so I’m trying to save money where I can. Thank you for this video. I’m so lost when it comes to designing it and what exactly I need to order. This video definitely helps a bit. I have Asetek TK Racing (basically La Prima) pedals and for now a G923 wheel, which I plan to upgrade to La Prima, so I want to make sure it’s strong enough to take the forces. My pedals are at a 90 degree angle and ideally I’d like them to be at a slight angle so the front is a bit higher than the back of the baseplate. That’s my biggest issue with ordering a rig. @@DouglasThompsonThanks i’m looking forward to buying this. I just need a seat and sliders. Also the final parts in the cart should come out to 209 dollars correct?
No flex with pedals and the flex on the DD is only up and down, not side to side. :) All you would need is like 7 more angle brackets w/hardware and like a 24" single slotted aluminum extrusion.
Hey brother I am looking at ordering this kit but I am looking at the 1.5”x3” for the outer base. So just wanted to ask, I subbed the two 45” unmilled pieces and the two 20” unmilled pieces. Does that sound right?
just curious i know this post is old, do you have any pre carted kits that have a mounting location for a shifter and handbrake? as well as foot plates, that im not nearly as worried about but if you have options i love supporting these kind of buisness(and im broke) I appreciate your time!
@stank4950 i don't. Its easy enough though, you can simply add a few extra brackets and a 14" or so peice of extruding you can mount on either side of the rigs upright posts.
Hey, thanks so much for this! Question for ya: Why do you need the deep tap on one side of the 20 incher? I'm using your project as a base, but going to beef it all up with 3" instead of the 1.5 for the base pieces and will make it a few inches longer :)
Even though this is an old comment, the 20" piece with each end deep tapped for 30mm for M8 bolts on each end is for the wheel deck. He put a corner bracket on each end in addition to the other corner brackets. Gives the ability to rotate/tilt the 20" piece for the wheel.
Great video. great entry level rigid rig. though im set with rig, still great prices on parts for addon mod and stuff. even if people want more rigid profiles, prices are killer
I saw you posted there is up and down flex ? I want to buy this and build on it I want to eliminate up and down flex woth the csl Dd how would I do that ? Add another 10/15 extruded bar behind the one that you had on the video ? Would that do the trick ? I have HPp hydronic pedals I would assume this is strong enough to not have flex with these
Just another 14" or so peice of single slot extrusion and 2 angle brackets with hardware. Most shifters and handbrakes will mount in the middle although you might have to buy a separate plate to mount both in the same area.
Wow that's a brilliant rig for $200! I wish i had space for it, not sure what that would be in English pounds but I think it's probably cheaper than the Wheel Stand DD from Next Level Racing (which i can just fit into my tiny room) Pukka!
So I am 6'4"......260lbs.......should i just add to the length and width some? I was thinking about just adjusting your order to accommodate....say 6" longer and about 4" wider? Not sure how tall you are.....just want to make sure it fits my length without being cramped!
I was able to fit comfortably and I'm 5'11" and had room to spare, if you want to be positive adding that length won't hurt but keep in mind you will have to add width for 6 peices I think off the top of my head.
That I'm not sure of, but I designed the rig to accommodate pretty much anything. If you want to send me pics of the mounting area of the pedals I could help you. Demureg@gmail.com
Hello I just got this rig but was wondering if I could add a triple monitor stand to it and if you have some dimensions to set up a triple monitor stand?
Not sure if you are still looking, but Micro Center has the TK Racing triple monitor stand for $250. Genuinely seems like it’s cheaper than making an aluminum one DIY.
hey do you think this will hold up a 11 nm ff from a logitech pro wheel and pedals? I do use it for RBR too. I really push hard on the brakes. Thanks for all dude, I still can believe companies are charging 900 plus for cockpits
So you’re saying you mounted a 15NM wheelbase to THIS rig. The same way this video shows you mounting the 5NM CSl DD. And you had no flex? If this is the case. Everyone is severely overpaying for super rigid aluminum cockpits they don’t need. Your build here seems similarly rigid to the ASR1 cockpit from Advanced Sim Racing.
Yes it was absolutely fine, any flex experienced was purely visual and not felt. I overbuilt my main rig but I designed this one to be as cheap and small as possible. It does have flex of course but it is a MUCH better option than any of the steel tubing rigs and infinitely more modular.
After having it set up & using it for some time, how sturdy is it? If you have had the chance to test out other ones does it compare to the bigger name brand more expensive ones?
My Dad is using it daily with no complaints. Big name doesn't count for anything in this space as they are all using the same standards. :) When you buy something from a larger company you are paying less for materials and more for the design.
@@DouglasThompsonWell this gave me inspiration. I think I might do it for less with cheaper , a bit smaller aluminium profiles. I hope to see your rig in action with DD. And some pressure test not only from top, bit from side to side. If you'd do some drift, or race where you need to throw wheel a lot that would be incredible. As a DIY guy I appreciate your content.
@@DeiviZZZ side to side it's solid as hell. The only compromise I made is to the forward and back movement. Both forces are not really part of turning a wheel left and right luckily! :)
I ordered via the link, and it shows I only ordered 24 nuts and 24 bolts. Is that going to be enough? Counting the number you installed here makes me think I’ll be short, unless some of the brackets come with hardware? Not sure if I need to order more nuts and bolts. Thanks!
This one was the best affordable rig introduction video ever. I'm willing to buy this set. One question here. Which seat and seat bracket should I buy to make it fit to this rig?
You will have to purchase another peice or 2 of aluminum extrusion and 4-16 angle brackets and associated hardware. This depends mostly on the mounting options of whatever gear you end up getting.
Depends on your preferences but if you add 2 90 degree 2 slot wide brackets, the hardware and a 12" or so piece of single slot extrusion you would most likely be good for most sequentials.
Just wondering If these parts will also work for me. I a 6'4. Could you tell me how tall you are and if you have enough room or if you think it would have enough room for someone at my height.
@@DouglasThompson Ah I just commented on your other video this same question. This answer is sufficient! LostPackets, You could make the 45" pieces 47" instead and it shouldn't increase shipping costs.

That must be an error in your order they sent because each bracket I think is supposed to come with its own hardware. I only set up having that many tnutz extra for the brackets that didn't have the option to include hardware.
@@DouglasThompson oh shit really? Cause the brackets were out of stock so I just picked the black ones and didn’t realize they need to be selected with hardware. That’s my bad! I do want to give you props for the build though. Saved me a ton of money! Installing a brand new Simagic Alpha Mini when my bolts and T nuts arrive! For now I have to just look at a 80% built rig. Lol
Yes, I have confirmed it can handle the 15nm ddwb, you might need to buy 2 longer brackets for the rear or sides though. I have successfully mounted it and tested it with this specific rig design and it was solid enough to enjoy driving.
All that's needed is 4 longer brackets that with reach the bolts on the bottom. :) you can always drill the holes where you need them.or you can simply add another bar on the backside of the upright.
@@DouglasThompson thanks alot, and another random question, is the hardware included just enough for the rig or does it include extra, I tried doing the math and I always get a bigger number lol
Not sure how it would work but I'm sure it could with a second support added just get the rig and add another single slot extrusion for the wheelbase with like 4 more brackets and hardware. Seems like it should be a simple addition.
Thanks for answering, I just bought a bunch of extrusion based on your rig. I have a question, does it matter what t nut I use or they all the same. I saw on amazon has a lot of good deals.
@@QuanNguyen-vr4im I think as long as they re standard they should fit but no guarantees lol that's why I put the link there so people could get exactly what the tutorial shows. ;)
I am 6’6” so I also have this question. Douglas got the floor pieces to be 45”, but you can make them up to 47 15/16” and still avoid the extra shipping surcharge from Tnutz. Also probably depends on what seat you get and how far it can go back.
No, what I have been doing is releasing my bigger SimRacing videos on my second channel for a few days to a week to give people an incentive to go check that channel out. Then I post it over here and get the video some more attention for the people that aren't interested in supporting the second channel.
Thanks for the reply, can you confirm, I was just reviewing the cart, are the T Nuts and Screw counts correct? You have 24 for each, but if there are 32 holes for the corner brackets, plus 16 holes for the Corner gusset, wouldn't we need 48 t-nuts and screws?

Also, what add ons would I need to include support bars for a shifter and handbrake?
No flex with pedals and the flex on the DD is only up and down, not side to side. :)
All you would need is like 7 more angle brackets w/hardware and like a 24" single slotted aluminum extrusion.
Hey brother I am looking at ordering this kit but I am looking at the 1.5”x3” for the outer base. So just wanted to ask, I subbed the two 45” unmilled pieces and the two 20” unmilled pieces. Does that sound right?
@@DanielStemen if those are the two longest dimensions, you should be good I think off the top of my head.
@@DouglasThompson Yes they are thank you! There is 1 20" piece that is threaded but I think that piece is the one that holds the wheel.
just curious i know this post is old, do you have any pre carted kits that have a mounting location for a shifter and handbrake? as well as foot plates, that im not nearly as worried about but if you have options i love supporting these kind of buisness(and im broke) I appreciate your time!
@stank4950 i don't. Its easy enough though, you can simply add a few extra brackets and a 14" or so peice of extruding you can mount on either side of the rigs upright posts.
Where is part 2?
Coming soon!
Hey man, how many long slotted corner brackets did you use in the build? The tnut cart doesnt have them in stock so I cant find it.
I heard about that. Off the top I used 18 slotted, I think.
@@DouglasThompson thank you!
Thanks for this great video. Do you have an updated video that shows where we can add a shifter? Thanks!
No but soon
Dude , you read my mind ! I have had this idea for a week or so . Thx 🤘🏼🏁Now I just need a dd
:)
Hey, thanks so much for this! Question for ya: Why do you need the deep tap on one side of the 20 incher?
I'm using your project as a base, but going to beef it all up with 3" instead of the 1.5 for the base pieces and will make it a few inches longer :)
I can't remember off the top of my head...lol
Even though this is an old comment, the 20" piece with each end deep tapped for 30mm for M8 bolts on each end is for the wheel deck. He put a corner bracket on each end in addition to the other corner brackets. Gives the ability to rotate/tilt the 20" piece for the wheel.
Great video. great entry level rigid rig. though im set with rig, still great prices on parts for addon mod and stuff. even if people want more rigid profiles, prices are killer
ya, you can always add to this stuff! infinite possibilities.
I saw you posted there is up and down flex ? I want to buy this and build on it I want to eliminate up and down flex woth the csl Dd how would I do that ? Add another 10/15 extruded bar behind the one that you had on the video ? Would that do the trick ? I have HPp hydronic pedals I would assume this is strong enough to not have flex with these
Honestly it isn't noticeable, just if you try you can feel it a little. The rim itself will flex before the uprights. ;)
Pedals won't be an issue either.
Do you know if this design would work with the Logitech G920? I’m new to sim racing and haven’t upgraded to a DD yet
Thar has a clamp system correct? If so, as long as the clamp can open to a few inches wide, yes, this would work.
@@DouglasThompson Thanks, man. Do you have any idea what I should add to be able to attach a shifter and handbrake?
Just another 14" or so peice of single slot extrusion and 2 angle brackets with hardware. Most shifters and handbrakes will mount in the middle although you might have to buy a separate plate to mount both in the same area.
@@DouglasThompson Thank you!
Hey Douglas, is the "Length (in):20" in cm or inch? Cheers mate.
Inches
Wow that's a brilliant rig for $200! I wish i had space for it, not sure what that would be in English pounds but I think it's probably cheaper than the Wheel Stand DD from Next Level Racing (which i can just fit into my tiny room) Pukka!
It's definitely worth making oomph for! :)
So I am 6'4"......260lbs.......should i just add to the length and width some? I was thinking about just adjusting your order to accommodate....say 6" longer and about 4" wider? Not sure how tall you are.....just want to make sure it fits my length without being cramped!
I was able to fit comfortably and I'm 5'11" and had room to spare, if you want to be positive adding that length won't hurt but keep in mind you will have to add width for 6 peices I think off the top of my head.
tHi, hank you for the video but how do you fix the NEW CSL pedal on the RIG PLS? Merci.
That I'm not sure of, but I designed the rig to accommodate pretty much anything. If you want to send me pics of the mounting area of the pedals I could help you. Demureg@gmail.com
Just ordered the rig made a few tweeks (a couple inches wider and 3 inches longer as im on the larger side) thank you
Nice! Thank you for watching!
Hello I just got this rig but was wondering if I could add a triple monitor stand to it and if you have some dimensions to set up a triple monitor stand?
Definitely can add it but I don't have any plans built for one specifically.
Not sure if you are still looking, but Micro Center has the TK Racing triple monitor stand for $250. Genuinely seems like it’s cheaper than making an aluminum one DIY.
@@glenndjenkins IDK I have seen one of those break and take out 2 of 3 monitors connected to it in the process.
what would i need to buy to add a shifter/handbrake plate to this
Just a few more peices of extrusion and some brackets.
hey do you think this will hold up a 11 nm ff from a logitech pro wheel and pedals? I do use it for RBR too. I really push hard on the brakes.
Thanks for all dude, I still can believe companies are charging 900 plus for cockpits
I have mounted a 25 lb 15 NM base with no issues. :)
@@DouglasThompson In August/September I am gonna build a similar DIY Aluminum Rig, will make a video on my experiences and credit you!
Thank you much! Send me the link when you finish it.
After having it set up & using it for some time, how sturdy is it?
If you have had the chance to test out other ones does it compare to the bigger name brand more expensive ones?
My Dad is using it daily with no complaints. Big name doesn't count for anything in this space as they are all using the same standards. :)
When you buy something from a larger company you are paying less for materials and more for the design.
@@DouglasThompson thank you very much for the fast reply!
Is there anyway to add a seat sliding mechanism for this aluminum rig?
@@keanobambino2132 yes indeed as long as it's the same width as the seat brackets you should be fine
@@DouglasThompson okay so it is possible to install a seat that slides back & forth, perfect! Thank you brotha
@@keanobambino2132 yes indeed just make sure it's intended for aftermarket racing seats like the nrg universal should work I think.
you, good sir are incredible.
Thank you! Hope this gets some good use!
Would the anodized black material be more expensive?
Oh the rig, yes it would.
@@DouglasThompson damn ight fs but thanks for making this vid it's so very useful lmao
I ordered via the link, and it shows I only ordered 24 nuts and 24 bolts. Is that going to be enough? Counting the number you installed here makes me think I’ll be short, unless some of the brackets come with hardware? Not sure if I need to order more nuts and bolts. Thanks!
Let me see what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure you should be fine as I think I even included extra for seat and pedal mounting.
Yes, so if you look at the main small brackets, 16 of them include hardware. I know it has confused some people.
Thanks for this. Ive been looking for something Diy since I am starting out in racing. I am going to mod this for my flight sim also.
NICE!!!
Bro... I feel stupid for spending so much on my rig.....
Maybe I'll sell it and get this instead lol I'm still saving a few bones..
Subbed.
Thank you man! If you got the receipt, it's not too late maybe.
This one was the best affordable rig introduction video ever. I'm willing to buy this set.
One question here.
Which seat and seat bracket should I buy to make it fit to this rig?
Any will fit
I got a question, so when I click the link for the cart will everything be the exact same in the video?
yes, except the peripherals and such.
Okay thanks
Nice video how would I mount shifter and handbrake?
Looking to build this in school and buy the brackets so I essentially get it for free.
You will have to purchase another peice or 2 of aluminum extrusion and 4-16 angle brackets and associated hardware. This depends mostly on the mounting options of whatever gear you end up getting.
Does anyone know what parts I could also buy and add to my cart for a shifter mount?
Depends on your preferences but if you add 2 90 degree 2 slot wide brackets, the hardware and a 12" or so piece of single slot extrusion you would most likely be good for most sequentials.
Just wondering If these parts will also work for me. I a 6'4. Could you tell me how tall you are and if you have enough room or if you think it would have enough room for someone at my height.
I'm 5'11" you can put the seat back further and the pedals further away as well.
@@DouglasThompson Ah I just commented on your other video this same question. This answer is sufficient!
LostPackets, You could make the 45" pieces 47" instead and it shouldn't increase shipping costs.
Bruhhhh!! This is exactly what I want to do... where is part 2 as promised!?!?! I need part 2? !
It's up! :) been up for a good while I think the link is in the description, if not I will post it here for you.

Brooo i got an alpha mini but the ffb on wrc 10 is inconsistent it just shuts off mid-game i don't know how to fix this 🙄
Can u help?
Is it after you pause? It did that to me with my CSL DD after one of their updates before.
@@DouglasThompson no it's literally mid-game when i'm driving.
I be driving normally then the ffb shuts off and there's no response from the wheel neither left or right then comes back on
@@TheWicked122 what are your ffb settings? Are you using a custom wheel profile? Have you made multiple profiles?
@@DouglasThompson i'm using a modified profile of dirt rally's settings.
I tried both normal and compatible mode but it's the same 🙄
Is there like any patch i should download? I can't find anything online
@@TheWicked122 sorry I meant a custom profile in the wrc 10 game? Did the base work without mapping it to the game?
that link is that for the full rig othere then the seat
Yes.
Do you have to choose the machining option on both ends for the wheel base bracket? The cart says only one end. Thanks
I have heard this before let me check.
Yes both ends, I will try to correct that.
I fixed the link to include that.
@@DouglasThompson i clicked the link but it just says "Your cart is currently empty." im not sure if this is just an issue for me
Hey man you might want to correct the amount of T nuts and bolts for the cart. Your cart shows 24 of each. I ordered from your cart and the amount of T nuts and bolts are way too low. I had to make a second order to get more.
Really? I'll check now.
Lol
@@knotryter lol whoops, ya it was cheaper to get the included hardware. It wouldn't let me select it with some parts. Sorry for the confusion.
Would this be ok for the 15 nm cammus ddwb ? cheers
Yes, although you would need some longer brackets or a mounting plate. The rig is more than strong enough for it though.
@@DouglasThompson ok cool
Do you think this could handle the Cammus 15nm wheelbase
Yes, I have confirmed it can handle the 15nm ddwb, you might need to buy 2 longer brackets for the rear or sides though. I have successfully mounted it and tested it with this specific rig design and it was solid enough to enjoy driving.
You mean the rear and sides for the base? Or for the wheel mount?
Yes for the base, you will need a couple longer brackets since the mounting holes are a bit further away.
Do you think this would work for a 20 NM base?
I tried it with a 15nm base and it was fine.
Thank You! @@DouglasThompson
Thank you for your content.
:) thank you for taking the time to comment!
Would this work for a simucube 2 sport?
I'm sure it would if you ordered some compatible brackets. To mount it to the wheelbase bar.
any tips trying to mount other wheel bases like the csl elite?
All that's needed is 4 longer brackets that with reach the bolts on the bottom. :) you can always drill the holes where you need them.or you can simply add another bar on the backside of the upright.
@@DouglasThompson thanks alot, and another random question, is the hardware included just enough for the rig or does it include extra, I tried doing the math and I always get a bigger number lol

Thanks for answering, I just bought a bunch of extrusion based on your rig. I have a question, does it matter what t nut I use or they all the same. I saw on amazon has a lot of good deals.

I am 6’6” so I also have this question.
Douglas got the floor pieces to be 45”, but you can make them up to 47 15/16” and still avoid the extra shipping surcharge from Tnutz.
Also probably depends on what seat you get and how far it can go back.
