I carried this unit in my hunting vest for over 14 years. Finally upgrading to a Garmin GPSMAP 66st model. Bigger and weighs more, but it is certainly an upgrade. I can't complain about the Etrex though. Always got me out of the woods and back to my vehicle before sundown.
This is an excellent hobby. Land/sea navigation has gotten to the point that it's specialized. Few people know map reading, shooting a bearing or using something as archaic as using a compass. We used to do that in the scouts, but this is a nice modern spin on a pretty handy skill. I use an HC and I have to admit it, it's fun.
I still find it amazing that this is now so much easier with an iPhone, I can do a search for nearby caches, log visits, add pics, all directly from my phone. Of course I still bring a gps, for where there is no cell signal.
At the end of your vid you say on your like/dislike list that in very heavy tree cover that it's not so accurate, but LOTS of people that gave their reviews at Amazon say the device even works in the basements, offices and so forth. Anyway, thanks for posting your review!
Fun! Except that is not the Garlough Park cache that you found, is it? I know, because I am "Knowschad". I tried to figure out by the signatures in the log which cache it really was, but ran out of patience.
REI has eTrex Vista HCx on sale for $149.99 (retail price $250). I bought one yesterday and found my first 3 geocaches today! Love the Vista so far and just wish the wrist strap was shorter. I don't think it was meant to be used as a wrist strap... maybe a neck lanyard?
Good video!....I started doing Geocaching with my girlfriend.. We've been using phone Gps's. (Android and Iphone) Not very accurate..Handheld is the way to go, evidently. I did document our first find on UA-cam.. Thanks for the review, I've been looking at this model series..Thanks
Thata a nice unit. Does it go blank and lock up untill the batteries are removed? I should have saved a little more for a color unit instead of the eTrex Legend (B/W). Seems much easier to read and has more memory and a better cable interface.
most will work but just make sure you have one with the pacific area information and not the pacific or americas, but im sure you can download the extras anyways
Interesting that you don't demonstrate the compass navigation screen for geocaching, Many geocachers consider it to be the key tool on a unit for geocaching. It makes it so much easier. Follow the arrow and watch the distance count down.
Does this work anywhere in the world? I'm going on a trip to Japan soon and I am trying to find a handheld GPS that has maps of the whole world with all the streets so I don't get lost :)
I had a Garmin, threw it away and went with Magellan, the Garmin only gives you enough map to get started, I found it to be less detailed. When I bought the Magellan, it was very detailed, have the Roadmate 2000, and even down in the Louisiana woods, roads were visible, Garmin didnt show none of that. I tossed it.
Maps from OpenStreetMap.ORG can be downloaded free of charge, and they are up-to-date because of all the voluntary work of the users. These maps of every place in the world can be used in MapSource/BaseCamp and in all types of GPS devices. I even used these maps in my smart phone and in my tablet using OSMAND for Android.

Nice little unit. I have the older black and white version. Love the small size. More pocketable than my other 60CSx.
