Bring the Stars Home! - Smart Skylight Hack Using BlissLights Laser/LED Projector

- I was pondering over a novel 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿 around the same time my toddler expressed interest in looking up in the night sky. Instead of static light emitting from a traditional luminaire, I wondered if I could create a dynamic nightlight, similar to the vibrant movements of the stars and nebulas, so that she can be in awe when gazing up at the ceiling.
I then came across a 𝗟𝗘𝗗/𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 from BlissLights that is relatively low-power (5 Watts) and inexpensive. Out of the box, the projector is not Smart Home ready where turning it on requires a manual push of a button. The proverbial "𝒔𝒌𝒚’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕" in the DYI world, so checkout the video demo on the hacks and modifications enabling the projector to be mounted on the wall and controlled by a smart device (e.g. switch, motion sensor, voice assistance, routine, etc.).

The company selling this should take notes. 😜
Hahahahaha good hack I can now use it with a smart plug and my Google Home ! Thanks Pal ! 🙂
I also want to order it, however, it is a little expensive, so I order a more cheaper one with the same function, only $30.99 click here for it-www.amazon.com/dp/B08JGD4DDY?ref=myi_title_dp
Thank you for the wall mount idea
Hello everyone !
I reviewed my BilssLight yesterday.
I did the modification like in the video and it works A1 🙂.
I would like to add that doing the modification you don't loose the ability to scroll in options manually via the power SW that you modify.
I can now plug my Bliss in a smart outlet and ask my Google Home or assistant to activate or deactivate my BlissLights.
Thanks you so much for that wonderful and easy Hacks
Thanks for the awesome feedback and good to hear everything works and that you are enjoying the product! :)
I did this myself. Drilled the exact same spot as you did, used a precision screwdriver to get the screws out, used a can of air to clear out the plastic inside, put on the mount, put the mounting base on the opposite side and sealed it back up and threw it on the wall.
Awesome, it's good to hear this project has inspired others. I hope you like your new setup.
Where did you get the wall mount for it? Any links?

at 2:46 u got me :D Great Work!
The northern light projectors are much better. They have a nice flowing pattern and the speed and colors can be adjusted.
Amazing job 👌 but i believe you have the right skils to do it
I got it and my room Is So HoooOOOOoT i goT In lOvE!🥰🤪
I'd definitely pay you to do this for me lol
My sky lite has started grinding when I turn it on, it is so loud, any idea how to fix?
There is a motor inside with some visible gears. You can open the enclosure and check where the noise is emanating from. The issue may be lose debris or that the motor or gears need to be lubricated. Good luck!
Grease the gears inside
Hello again ,
Let me suggest something for you if you dont mind ,
As i mentioned before i believe that you are really talanted with what you are doing ,why dont you teach us the basic of such work ...like wiring , measuring, and drilling ..its like 101 for dummy's .
Looking forward ...im sure your channel will boom in the near future
Good luck 🤞😃
Thanks for the suggestion and I'll keep that in mind for future videos. In the meantime, my recent videos do show the time-lapse of the project steps, potentially similar to your suggestion.
Awesome! Would you be willing to sell a modified “mount ready” sky lite? I’d definitely buy one. Please let me know! Thanks!
No plans to make more for the masses but thanks for the interest and comment. I hope BlissLights will produce one in the future since there is certainly customer interest.
But you can't use an app to make different color patterns and stuff like that since I don't have no Bluetooth it's just the same thing over and over and over I'm tired of this already I want to give mine's back
Amazing
Are you interested in the galaxy projector? if yes, click here for only $22.99 with bluetooth speaker and remote-www.amazon.com/gp/mpc/AYRWPMNVKWIM6
I’m your 100 sub
Thanks for being part of my subscriber milestone! :)
Is this just one skylight producing all of that or do u have multiple
Good eye. I leveraged two skylight projectors to increase the coverage area.
Anytime it's too good to be true, it's trickery, unfortunately!! 😔
So Dope ....
Out of the box, you can hit the power button to cycle from Off -> Stars + Cloud -> Fade in/out -> Stars only -> Clouds Only -> Off. Once you short out the power button, do you lose the ability to cycle through the different settings, and it just stays at the Stars + Cloud setting?
Yes, functionalities will be limited. If you short the power button, the projector defaults to 'Stars + Cloud' mode upon power on (which is my preference for my smart switch). After power on, you can still press the other two buttons to cycle through the modes you mentioned above. However, I noticed you lose other modes like the ability to turn on/off the motor/motion as opposed to not shorting the power button. Thus, there is no longer any differentiation between the two other buttons functionality wise.
how many watts was the soldier iron
It's an old Weller soldering iron, so I'm guessing around 50 watts? But any soldering iron would be sufficient for this hack.
I got 2 of them and need some advice, should i plug them out the wall outlet when i get to bed, or leave it in and turn the lights off with my phone while it is still in the wall outlet?
You can keep the skylight plugged to the wall outlet. I believe the skylight will automatically turn off after 6 hours of constant use.
Do you prefer this one over the sega flux or sega original?
I have not personally tried the projectors from Sega. I'm sure they are a brilliant alternative considering that they are more expensive.
Mine makes a weird a noise for like 30 minutes and then it stops.. :/
Does the skylite come with a remote to change the lights and modes or it only works with phone/app??
Unfortunately, the Skylite projector is pretty basic without app support. This video primarily illustrates how to remotely turn on/off the device using a smart outlet/switch. You could potentially control the projector modes (and on/off button) via your phone by mounting a couple of button-pushers like Switch-Bot (www.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-bot ) onto the Skylite buttons. I have used a Switch-Bot on other applications such as remotely controlling the on/off switch on my desktop computer.
I will receive my Bliss this Sunday. If I do bypass the on/off SW. I will loose the ability to change pattern ? Cause that SW is use for on and off and 3 pattern selection. Am I right ?
The switch being shorted is the on/off switch and you will still be able to change the pattern. Before you solder anything, you can test by holding down the on/off switch with your finger while you unplug the power cord and/or press the other switches.
Hi is this a classic green/blue model or the cobalt blue/blue one? Planning to buy the same as yours 😊
Yes, it's the Classic green/blue model. For convenience, I've posted a link in the video's description to the Amazon's product detail page.
I prefer just the cloud scene. Any idea on how it could be set just for that scene?
By shorting the power button, the projector defaults to both cloud/nebula and stars being on at the same time during power on as opposed to the last active scene. If you want just the cloud during power on, I suspect you can just disconnect the power (e.g. unplug or remove) to the laser module (that projects the stars) so it will never receive power.
@@BuildASmarterHome Ah, good call. Thx.
Is that the green star one or blue star one
It is the green+blue version.
Oh ok thanks
Hey found your from amazon , can you please tell me what screw thing you put inside .
It's just a standard camera- or tripod-sized nut (I believe 1/4 x 20) to tighten the projector onto the mount.
You could not have picked a better song
Thanks! I appreciate the compliment.
Do you like the music galaxy projector? here is a galaxy projector with only $22.99, click here for it-www.amazon.com/gp/mpc/AYRWPMNVKWIM6
I'll be returning mine because of this exact lack of feature!
When attached to a Wi-Fi plug, I can only automatically turn OFF the device, but not turn on the device! 😔 🤦♂️
Sorry to hear that. After receiving my projector, I too was eager to convert it to be able to control with a smart plug.
@@BuildASmarterHome unfortunately, there isn't any in depth step by step directions out there for those like myself that are far from knowledgeable on this skill set. 😔
I understand. I am essentially shorting the power button. I have, however, seen other UA-camrs following up to my video with a potentially easier (but not necessarily cleanest) approach by taping the power button or tying it down with a rubber band.
@@BuildASmarterHome I thought about taking the cover off & dropping a tad bit of super glue into the button mechanism.... 🤔 🤷
what kind of screwdriver was it??
Just a typical Phillips screwdriver.
What kind of wall mount should I get
I've posted a link to the (example) wall mount in the description section of the video.
@@BuildASmarterHome Hello. I have a question. Is this the cobald-version in blue/blue ? Is the nebula only in blue ? I see on the video that there is a pink colour in the nebula. Is the nebula in pink too ?
Currently there are two color offerings from BlissLights. I chose the Classic (Green/Blue) version. There is a subtle violet/purple color from the Blue LED that is difficult to see by the naked eye but more easily picked up certain cameras (like in the video).
Mine stop moving, is there a way to reset it?
The movements are driven by the internal motor. Unfortunately there is no published instruction on resetting the device and I doubt there is one. You can try to power cycle the device and press the buttons on the side. If those steps do not work, you likely have a disconnected (no power supplied to) or burnt motor.
I wish they made it look more realistic 😭
Thanks for the hack..I used conducting glue (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z9H7ZW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to attach a thin piece of wire as you did (did not have a soldering iron) and it works perfectly with a smart plug.
Good to hear that the hack worked for you by using a solderless conducting glue - a very interesting method.
Does this has music?
This projector doesn't have any music input capabilities.
@@BuildASmarterHome okey thanku
Mine make noice and idk how to stop it
Sorry to hear. It's difficult to pinpoint the problem, but there are gears and a motor inside the projector which might be causing the noise when rotating. You could check if they are clean, lubricated and working properly. Good luck!
what‘s the name of the song?
'I'm Sending You Away' by M83 from Oblivion Soundtrack.
Haha Plz Can I send you mine and you fix it 😂i Will pay you for that😫
I got mine from SuperstarAroma.com and it was WAYYYYYYY cheaper
