    For the sake of accuracy: the PearAI editor is a fork of VSCode and the PearAI coding assistant (they call it pearai-submodule) is a fork of Continue (which is an extension similar to Copilot.)

      Well I agree to an extent, however wasn't everyone saying a few years ago that a lot of coding is just googling? This is super Google when it comes to code.
      HOWEVER, if they are not generating ideas themselves and then seeking guidance from chat, and instead just feeding code into it and copy pasting what comes back or asking it what to do next, then that's an issue.

    One way or another, everyone in the industry is building on top of open-source. However, the issue with PearAI seems to be how they handle criticism. It's also funny that they actually have a commit where they changed every instance of 'continue' to 'PearAI.'

    • @justanaveragebalkan
      @justanaveragebalkan 5 хвилин тому

      Built on top of open-source and blatantly stealing a repository, replacing the oss license with a proprietary one is entirely different, what people say that almost everything is built on top of open-source they mean stuff like the databases running behind the apis, the scaling clusters with Kubernetes, the CI/CD pipelines, the source control system that is being used, those are products that are utilized and used on their own to build your product, you don't go and get the source for PostgreSQL and just add it to your codebase (well in most cases). Usually you use open-source tools to build with yes, but that's not stealing as anyone is allowed to use, extend and modify them to their own preference as long as one thing is clear, any change should be disclosed, and if the source code is being added to your codebase, the portion that uses it should remain free and public as the license states.
      For some it might really not matter but building any viable product especially when you do it 1-2 hours after work every day for free, takes a long time, sometimes years and then one day you see that notification on User- starred your repository. Then few weeks later few more do, and suddenly it starts to take off, those people find issues that you do your best to address and at the same time spent time to finish off what your started, and then one day, two blatant scammers with chicken nest haircuts just fork whatever you spent time doing, as well as hopefully other maintainers that might have joined during the years and just ignore all the licenses in place, rename the important bits to seem like they did this, and go on twitter blatantly saying, yo dawg, i ChatGPT the license, we are busy building and we can't be bothered with legal right now.
      What the fuck are you actually busy with, renaming and butcher my work for the last 2-3 years?
      Being a maintainer is stressful and ungrateful enough and I do believe that we as developers shouldn't indorse or accept anything like this, because tomorrow, it might not be the repository of Microsoft where they have engineers on staff working on most of the stuff but your repository and I am sure you wouldn't like to see someone else make money of your baby, if anyone does make a profit that person should be you.

      The problem is people playing word games with the definition of "stealing"
      Also the vague use of the word "free".
      Something being free to use does not mean free to modify, free to redistribute, free to sell, free to neglect credit, etc.
      So yeah, just follow the license.

    I think they just fucked up every aspect and disrespected a large and giving community. It's just a bad look and their children. Cool thing is this is a growing experience. End of the day the idea doesn't matter. Continue and Pearai is funded by YC. Meaning YC got both Negative and Positive attention. 500k isn't funding pearai. It's funding their subscriber count and influence.
