Valyria was crazy OP..dragons, magic, the whole package. But they got way too cocky, and the Doom was like the ultimate nerf. Straight-up “you flew too close to the sun” vibes.
The Targaryens were one of the 40 dragonlord families yes but they were by no means the most powerful, its been stated by GRRM that they were pretty low on that latter. The Velaryon's were nothing compared to the targs and the celtigars were nothing compared to the Velaryons
