Gday Folks and welcome back to the channel,
After my last video on Buying Canning jars, I got a lot of feed back about not including Fowlers jars, so this video is a bit more of a Comparison of Canning Jars. I also compare the current cost to purchase as things stand at the moment of both new and second hand jars. there is still a Jar Shortage here in Australia and from what I am seeing it is around the world.
Also, sometimes I link Amazon Affiliate links in the description. Shopping from these links supports our channel with a small commission without any additional cost to you! So Thank you for using these links!

I have recently brought the Aussie brand my self haven't used them yet. I am so glad we can buy jars here.
So glad to find another channel in Australia. We don't have a canning culture here so it's hard to buy the equipment. I hope you keep the vids comming it's great to see some channels make by Aussie. Great job on the jars.
Hopefully we will start to see some stock reappearing over here of other brands soon, most US stores have stock on hand now, so the overseas shipping should start again. There are a few good Aussie Homestead channels out there, but we don't have the numbers of the USA. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
Thank you so much for the comprehensive review. I’m getting back into canning this year and was looking at other options to build on my Ball stash, as they are becoming so rare and expensive in Australia now. I really appreciate your reviews!
My pleasure, hopefully the Ball supply will start back soon American stores have supplies most the time so hopefully once their season ends international supplies will start again, the amount of jars consumed in Australia would be less the one state over there.
Hello from South Australia! Thanks for this video :) recently into canning and homesteading and was so disappointed with the lack of Australian resources and info. Appreciate this!!
Glad it was helpful! They are a few Aussie Homesteading channels about, some are great friends. I tend to dive deep into subjects here and there, I try to explain where I have had troubles because of our resources down here compared to America. Have a look at Rebel Canning on Facebook I am a moderator on there and try to keep an Aussie influence on the page.
This is awesome thank you so much for a informative video, just what I have been looking for
Awesome glad I could be of help
Great video, very informative. Thank you 😊
My pleasure, thanks for watching 😁
Great video, thanks for the tips. I want to try canning soon :)
Always happy to be of help. Starting with water bath canning is pretty simple. Good food hygiene and some common sense go a long way.
Also have used the glass jars from the supermarket eg, sauce jars, pickles etc. I pressure canned a heap of carrots and they have worked well. I also have bought Forjar lids and they are great.
Those jars from the supermarket are designed for rougher life than canning jars so I love them. I have heard good things about forjars and also superb lids
Great video thank you.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment
Kitchen Warehouse has a sale. Some Kilner Jars are up to Half Price off. Best time to stock up on them 😊
Always great to stock up when on special. I have a possible internal move coming up though so more jars is something I am holding off on for now
Thanks for the jar chat, It's tricky here, but I looked at those red and white lid ones, they are in my local reject shop, I l purchase those for starting
With any jars cheaper ones no more than another other, just keep a good eye on the seal, if seals fail make sure not to use the contents, Jams and pickles are about the easiest and safest way to get started. Sugar will keep jams fairly safe and vinegar will do the same for pickles.
Great video 🙂
Glad you enjoyed
When you have a Fowlers Vacola jar, you have it for life unless it breaks. They are really thick. Same with the Weck jars.
Great points, I still think the cost is a little high on them as they are only rated to the Fowlers system of bottling. If they tested and rated up to pressure canner levels then that would make a huge difference
I have been pressure canning for a few years with my fowler vacola jars. They are a bit harder to open. I find a small pointy knife works when I place it to dislodge the rubber ring. I also have Ball Mason jars and bought some Aussie ones and they have worked well.
I have heard the biggest issue with using the Fowlers jars is the seals need replacement after a couple of goes with them. The use for pressure canning is not recommended for them, but for me the biggest issue is the price tag, if you can’t find a stash someone is giving away they can be quite dear
Nice to see what’s happening outside my own region, thank you. I recycle jars, too. Can you share how you get the garlic smell off the lids when you recycle garlic jars?
Happy to share, things get a little loud in Rebel sometimes and people don’t realize it is global. Hand wash first once the jar is empty, then through the dishwasher in the cutlery basket when I run it next, lastly a rinse short soak in water with vinegar added when I have a few together. Then into boiling water to sterilize before use, they come up fairly good but most the stuff I do has garlic in it too. I would probably not use them for say pumpkin purée but have plenty of other jars for that.
@@DownunderFarmandForge All good ideas. Thanks. I also set them out in the sun for a week or two. Amazing what UV will do. But in my region there’s only a couple months when there’s that much sun on a regular basis. 😄
@@cfessler3552 lol putting them in summer sun here would melt them
@@DownunderFarmandForge hold up, pumpkin puree? We have a huge pile of pumpkins growing in the horse paddock and that could be a good use for them.
On the jar shortage thing, I ordered a couple of dozen ball jars from amazon last night. I'm a prime member, so I got free shipping from the US, you just need to find the right listing
@@lindsaysmith6209 I done pumpkin purée last year, mainly frozen but did make up a batch of pumpkin butter too.
Amazon is of course a great go to, I am a little cautious on shipping jars international though, way to many horror stories with just domestic shipping. I normally like to pick them up with jars, but we do what we must in these times
Good honest review mate. Just a question, are there basically two sized lids - wide mouth and standard?
Would a Ball lid fit on a Aussie Mason jar with an Aussie mason band/ring for instance?
Only asking because the quality of the Ball or Kerr lids seem to be of a better/thicker quality from many reviews I’ve seen.
Finding it really hard to find Ball or Kerr jars and lids here in Oz at the moment and really want to try and stay away from the inferior types you spoke of that you find in shops like Kmart, Target and BigW.
Do you rate the quality of the Kilner lids and bands?
Hey Matt, right there with you mate, still dang hard to find much. Luckily I have jars left from last year, and unfortunately not a lot of produce this year. The Aussie Mason is an exact match for Ball in sizes, so that's why I can use the reusable lids on them. Ball lids were a slightly heavier gauge as well as the better coating, but I am hearing that the latest Ball lids are not much chop from the Americans in Rebel Canners. The Jar quality seems reasonable on the Aussie ones, but not a fan of the lids at all which is why I put the link in for the Aussie standard mouth tattlers, really wish we could order the large mouth because not everyone can buy them like I did through an American. Have not had any Kerr jars myself but I have heard that the quality on them is Really high, Same with the Kilner. Kilner has some great glasswear, is there metal work a match? I'm not sure but if is I would be getting them in a heart beat. Someone Mentioned you can Pressure can in some of the Weck jars, so I really need to investigate that more as they are some great jars and glass lids takes out the metal worries.
Yes they fit well and seal well with ball lids. There has been a quality issue with ball lids as they are being made with thinner gauge steel recenlty
I’ve never seen those welk jars! Mason jars with sealing cap lid and then a screw top is all I’ve ever seen But with the mason jar lids after sealed take the screw lid part off for storage. Check out Boots and Bounty Homestead for good canning ideas!
Hey Brenda the Weck jars are German from memory and a really high quality jar, much like the rings on Mason jars you take the clips off the other ones for storage. Lol I am a moderator on the Rebel canning Facebook group I have no shortage of tips, I get to spend about 1/2 hour everyday reading through posts, but normally removing poor comments.
With the Weck jars, the tapered one you had the picture of and the tulip shaped jar are both rated as suitable for pressure canning, but the other ranges are water bath canning only. I haven’t tried them as yet but as soon as I move I’m going to buy a dozen or so to test them out and if I’m happy with them I’ll buy up big and switch over to them. The tulip ones are absolutely beautiful but the tapered ones can stack together for storage so I can’t decide yet which one I’ll go with. I guess it depends how much storage space I have. The glass lid is a big factor for me. I much prefer glass to metal. And not wasting money on new lids every time is preferable. They do seem to be a fair bit wider than the Ball jars so less will fit in the canner each load, but I think that will be worth it. How many fit at a time will probably be a factor in which design I choose too.
Once I’ve bought up big with Weck, (I think they’re a bit cheaper from Ozfarmer) my Ball jars will get used for vacuum sealed dry goods. The gold lid jars and other cheap ones will be dry goods and spices etc.
I also have many boxes of saved jars. Passata, sauce etc. You can get replacement lids for those kinds of jars from Greenharvest. I’m okay with reusing lids but they will wear out before the jars do so it’s good to know they’re available.
I’ll save this video so if I decide to get some Tattler lids for my Ball jars I’ll use your link. Not sure about that yet. Will see what I need once I’m unpacked.
Awesome thanks for the info, it is hard to find some details just by searching that’s for sure, kinda need to get an instruction pamphlet from every manufacturer
@@DownunderFarmandForge oh, the Weck jars are oven safe too. According to the research I’ve done, the reason canning breads/cakes is considered unsafe by the powers that be in the US is because the jars are not oven safe. I’m not absolutely certain if I would want canned bread or cake, but in Weck jars I’ll give it a shot. Maybe it would be good. Might be handy to have a few breads on the shelf for when you really don’t want to turn the oven on in summer.
There are a lot of breads and also cheesecake recipes on the Rebel canners Facebook group, have a look in there. I am a mod in the group.
@@DownunderFarmandForge oh cool. I’ll have to check it out. Pretty sure I’m a member, I just don’t go on Facebook much these days. I think I need to do a big purge of my friends list. I was an admin in a health group for about 5 years and stupidly accepted friend requests from members. Now my Facebook is full of strangers. That might be a good task for just after I move when I’m exhausted and need to rest.
Yup I rarely add a member
You can re-buy lug lids for jars you recycle and reuse from products.
You can but tricky to find the right size generally. I tend to clean what I have really good and recycle them if I can get a few years from a jar I am generally pretty happy.
I have 2 a stove top as well as a plug-in vintage Fowlers. Have the jars somewhere too
Great system if you have the stuff for sure Nic, Pricing on them is just so high at moment
@@DownunderFarmandForge yeah the price is, we were looking at them seals etc just b4 Christmas
A wee bit of change required
Aussie mason jars are good for pressure canning . I use alternative lids and keep the ussie mason lids for other uses.
The only thing stopping me with the tattler and harvest guard lids is that they are plastic.
I am assuming the lids are not rat proof
Yep the only let down on those Aussie Mason is the lids for sure. I have used the harvest guard since they are a good grade plastic, but yes plastic. As far as rats I find the best solution is plaster of Paris mixed 50/50 with icing sugar, add in soup mix for bait and the rats will depart. Keep and open container of that where you have any food storage and they will go for it first, I keep it out with my chicken feed. Never see rats or sign of them anymore.
Anna, what lids do you use with the Aussie mason jars?

I’m new to canning. Can all the jars be used in a water bath and pressure canner.
Hey Kelly watch bath not an issue, I have heard that weck do carry a line of pressure canning capable jars, but of course speak to someone who knows the technical aspects of the jars. Fowlers are only rated for the Folwers canning system not regular waterbath or pressure canning, I have heard from people who do the pressure in them but I would be hesitant for sure. The Kmart/Coles style jars I would not pressure can in as I’d worry about the strength or faults in the jars, water bath yes but pressure gets out easier there, and you may still get breaks. Recycled yup the are fine as they have done it before without breaking. Lastly Ball and Aussie Mason we’re designed to be pressure canned with.
@@DownunderFarmandForge thanks a lot for your reply mate. I thought the cheap jars were just for jams and stuff and I didn’t think you could water bath them. Cheers mate.
@@kellyoconnor9773 just keep an eye on them if obviously flawed then don’t use them, and make sure the lids are loose enough to let pressure out
The jars with the red and white lid. Where are they from? Thanks.
Hi Sally those ones are from Cole’s in the kitchen and storage aisle. They do pretty good for jams and relish and most things that you open kettle can. One piece lid make it harder but not impossible for water bath canning
@@DownunderFarmandForge
Awesome thankyou!
@@sallyw7921 happy to help
Is there a rubber that can be painted on to recycled jars?
There is nothing really commercially available, most jar making companies have their own blends. You can easily get 2 or 4 uses out of the recycled lids, after that rust would tend to start being an issue, you can generally buy replacement lug lids to suit used jars off amazon as well. The best for ultimate reusable is the weck jars and seals or Tattler type lids on mason style jars
Watch a video on soaking the lids in baking soda water to soften gasket then washing them before using.
Hot water just before being applied has always worked great for me
I've wonder about some of the canning jars you're used. I can only get the tattlers and one time use flats here. Very interesting
Lol been canning since I was knee high to a grasshopper, so have built up and got rid of a couple jar collections over the years.
For jar lids work for me
Unfortunately still that issue with Australian supply, we can order for international source but still little supply in country
The different side of Darren 😋
Lol mate I don’t have side, I am well rounded, literally I just walked past the mirror 🤣
On the jar from Kmart you didn't like. Is it a vacuum lid? I just bought some preserving jars from Kmart because they were really cheap, about $1.67 for a 1 litre jar. My concern is will they seal properly? Wondering if you have seen Kmart's current offerings. Also wondering how old the jar you showed was. If it is only 2 years old they are likely putting out the same rubbish but if 10 years old perhaps they have improved the design. Perhaps too the screw on has changed and you can put other lids on them. It still comes with a 1 piece lid.
What can I say, I am a cheapskate. If I can get preserving jars for $1.67 for a 1 litre capacity that work well, that is the sort of deal that puts a smile on my face. The smile disappears if the jars end up not doing the job properly.
I think the biggest issue with the is thickness of sealing rubber, it is pretty much non existent the slightest skim around the ring, If the rubber changed they would be a whole lot better. It is amazing the difference between the Aussie Mason and Kmart both out of china, but then again the lids on the Aussie aren't great either. Personally I like the 2 piece mainly cause I can swap in the reusable flats to me over time that is cheap, I lost food in the Kmart ones so they cost me more in that way.
I think I got mine about 5 years back so hopefully the are better now, but keep an eye on them, use the food from them quick, watch for popped seals.
Lol i am a cheapskate too but want everything to a state I can trust it to stay good.
@@DownunderFarmandForge I was wondering if the new ones might now take lids from other manufacturers such as the two piece lids. I actually prefer the look of the Kmart jars. Mouth as wide as the jar and clean glass. The only embossing is the capacity - 1000ml. You can see them on the Kmart website, 3 for $5.50. I was wrong on price, they are closer to $1.86. each.
Thanks for the reply.
They are a totally different jar, so hopefully they will do the trick, just watch the lids for corrosion and that the seals stay good.
I always make sure to answer back, harder on replies as you don't always see them.
Am using Kmart jars now and have found them very good
Aussie Mason Jars....
NOT Auzzie Mason Jars.
That's how their website reads.
Pretty sure I didn’t spell it in this video, the previous video has a link to the website if it hasn’t changed in the last 3 years
At 14:00 onwards you show a handwritten list that clearly shows the words "AUZZIE MASON".
Good presentation, anyhow.
Cheers,
@@thejollyfrog640 fair enough, natural spelling to my mind, sorry
Its actually called bottling in Australia. Canning is an American term, just sayin
Most Australians do not recognize the term Bottling anymore our culture has shifted to the point where the older terms no longer work.
