ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT 08 - Urban expansion, Egypt
The population of Egypt's capital city, Cairo, increased from about 6 million to more than 15 million between the times when these two images were taken. As new urban and agricultural areas have been developed in the surrounding desert, they have required water to be diverted from the main Nile River Valley. This expanded irrigation is visible as numerous bright green areas throughout the 2014 image.
