    Beautiful, i like that you used smaller stitches so you could make it more elegant than most diy leather straps. I want to learn to do this so i can make dress straps for dress watches. This looks awesome 👏

      Hi,
      One could probably write a book on edge finishing but here I did 3 things,
      1. apply edge paint
      2. sand it with fine sandpaper
      -- repeat steps 1 and 2 until you are happy with the edge
      3. burnish, polish ( here with a wooden hand, burnisher )

    You do impeccable work and an even better job showing the process in your video. I make leather goods as well but I use a sewing machine. Would it be hard to use a sewing machine to make a watch strap? I have a Cowboy sewing machine.

    • @mkleathers3453
      @mkleathers3453  6 років тому

      Hi. Some straps for sure. As far as I know those are more heavy duty machines. Cowboys are often used by sheaths, belt makers, so thicker and tougher straps should be done easlly. Not sure how those machines handle lighter thread. And you know there is only one way to check it for sure :) Please let us know when you test it :)

    • @mkleathers3453
      @mkleathers3453  6 років тому

      Those have fi=3mm and 10mm distance. But that was actually made for a certain project, for smaller straps I usually use 1-2mm and 6-7 mm distance

    • @mkleathers3453

      Find any place that offers CNC cutting, they should be able to cut you any shape from plexi. I designed those myself and sent them for cutting. Or work with cardboard templates that is an option too. What do you mean size? The length of the strap ?

    Hey, I truly appreciate this tutorial. Is it possible you can give me a list of items you used to create your own watch band. Thank You!

    • @mkleathers3453
      @mkleathers3453  7 років тому +2

      Hi,
      The list of the tools I use is probably longer than the minimal list of the tools you would need to make a strap. But to make a strap you need:
      1. Leather, for top, and lining - if you make strap with lining
      2. Glue for leather
      3. Sharp knife,
      4. Ruler
      5. Piece of paper, cardboard to make templates
      6. Awl
      7. Stitching iron, pricking iron - to mark and punch holes for stitching
      8. Needle and thread
      9. Something to mount the strap while stitching, stitching pony is the name of the actual tool
      10. Hole punch
      11. Egde paint and something to apply it
      12. Sand paper, preferably on a block of foam or wood. 100,150, 180 grid
      13. Something to smooth/press the leather when glueing and shaping - bone folder. There are plenty of items you could use. needs to be firm and smooth.
      Here is a vid with simplier strap:

    • @mkleathers3453
      @mkleathers3453  6 років тому

      Hi, I use barge glue for leather and water based glue for leather (glue for bookbinding). The later does not smell :) Hard to recommend brands since that would depend on where you live and what is available to you in your area. If you don't have access to local leather craft shop, try Tandyleather. They have worldwide deliveries.

    • @mkleathers3453
      @mkleathers3453  6 років тому

      That depends totally on the leather thickness and the look you are after. If you want it higher, more round or square...There is no standard, just practice with some scraps and see the results. Here I left around 4 mm on each side and it was done from ~1.8 mm leather
