Gobsmacked. I lived in Pozzuoli from Dec1981 - June 1984. Took archaeology classes with University of Naples. Went scuba diving amongst the submerged ruins in Pozzuoli Bay frequently. Had my home destroyed by the Solfatara. Some of the best years of my life! But seeing this reconstruction brings a whole new appreciation for the achievements of the past - still trying to wrap my thoughts around it. I literally find myself in mourning for the history I trod upon and never truly knew nor recognized: they were giants - masters of form and beauty, architecture and space. Thank you for sharing this!!
It is indeed amazing, I used to go scuba and skin diving out in front of Lucrino and Baccoli along the Appian way and I would wait for the ferry to Ischia and eat lunch sitting on the wall in front of the Temple back in the late 60's and heard a story when we went back in 2001 we were told a story about the bradisismo in Pozzuoli. I guess one day the temple just sank like 3 meters or a little less and it filled with water and then on another day it just rose suddenly up and all of these huge fish were left flopping all over the temple floor and all of the people who lived around the temple rushed down and grabbed as many fish as they could and filled their fridge and then went back to get that night's dinner.... The guy who owned the bar on the south corner told me this story and I have no reason to disbelieve him as he was there at the time doing the same thing. We laughed as we ate lunch and listened to him tell stories... I so miss Napoli as do all my Wildcat classmates from Licola all the way to downtown was our home and it still is to this day.
