David Sylvian made great solo albums. Worthwhile albums are Secrets of the Beehive and Brilliant Trees. I liked the song Waterfront. Also noteworthy Forbidden Colours, a song he made with Ryichi Sakamoto (and instrumental version you hear in the movie Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in which David Bowie was actor)
Especially his collaborations with Fripp
Always loved Japan, my favourite band as a teenager, even their much maligned early stuff. It came as no surprise to me how great they became. Swing is a work of Art. All the elements are exceptional and in perfect harmony. x

I love Japan, but I've always found them a hard band to introduce to people. People either seem to click with them and love them, or they hate them. I've never people to be indifferent to Japan. All members are such talents. David's voice peaked in his solo work. Mick was a bespoke model, truly original. One of the standout bassists of the 80s and Fretless.
That was me who recommended the song! My favorite song from Japan by far. Mick Karn's bass is on fire, along with Richard Barbieri's synth and Steve Jansen's haunting, rhythmetic drumming.

Japan inspired Duran Duran.
I was really into the band back in the early 80s and this is one of my favourite songs of theirs. They were already broke up when I became a fan of them in 1983 though. Miss that era.
Mesmerizing music, so clean and precise. Japan has been one of my absolute favourite bands since I first heard 'polaroids' on my local progressive radio station. It's Bar-bee-ary. Jansen, on drums, is David's brother. senior from Canada
Sylvian's solo work was more jazzy, experimental, lots of ambient instrumental stuff. First four releases, Brilliant Trees, Alchemy - An Index of Possibilities, Gone to Earth and Secrets of the Beehive are superb.
First got into them in 1978 when they released the Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives Albums - I was Hooked - Saw them twice Live in Toronto Canada (which had their biggest following outside of the country of Japan) on the same night in 1979 - Met Mick and David at a meet and greet at The House Of Lords hair salon then later at the opening party of a new wave club called The Domino Klub - Been a fan ever since - Japan also reformed and released an album under the name "Rain Tree Crow" in 1991
Japan was the bridge from Roxy Music to Duran Duran
Duran Duran were desperate for David Sylvian to produce them, but he refused.
Japan's debut album 'Adolescent Sex' is amazing and well worth listening to a few tracks from. I recommend the title track as well as the opening track Transmission. A different sound but a brilliant introduction to a very young band.
Indeed. I played it a lot as a 17 year old. It was proto white funk combined with heavy guitars and Karn's bass playing was already exceptional. I'd never heard anything like 'Communist China' before for instance.
Their inspiration were the New York Dolls which was very evident. Even though I love the album I love (even more) their progression

Another good Karn project was with Midge Ure of Ultravox; song After a Fashion.

I think he should listen to the songs, 'Cornwall Stone' or 'Moonlife' better. Those songs are more artistically "avant garde" or experimental, and the best tracks off that album, along with 'His Box.' But hey, that's just my opinion, and recommendation.
Yes, Sylvian's name became prominent thanks to his solo work in which he managed to collaborate with some big names across different genres like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay, Robert Fripp, Fennesz etc. Which basically allowed him to embrace a bigger audience. Every album is worth checking out, but for someone, let's say, unprepared the obvious choice would be any of his 80s releases.

Was Sylvian more popular after? Good question. I'd say his first 4 solo albums were solid. Live with Fripp in Japan must be up there with 'Oil on Canvas'. They were an enigma, ending at their height of fame. Saw them in Leicester 1982 I think. GTP is a wonderful album, I wore the first one out, so bought a 2nd LP. Methods of Dance, Alien, The Tennant, Rhodesia are gems - they all are.
I've been a fan of Japan since I was a teenager in the early 80's and it's so nice to see a straight-forward, honest appraisal of their work. Particularly liked your comments regarding Mick Karn's playing and technique and it is genuinely unlike anything else! When I first heard this song, I was convinced that his bassline was some sort of reverse sound effect, but it's not - just his genius with the fretless bass guitar.

Sylvian has had a long solo career. He has toured the world many times. A great solo artist who is worth checking out.
I still prefer his output with Japan to his solo work.

Did you know, Mick Karn could not read music. He played his fretless bass and all reed instruments by ear. Incredible man. David was known first for his band Japan and has gone on to make incredible solo works. They also came back together under the banner Rain Tree Crow. These guys were so incredibly unique and arguably shaped the sounds of the 80's.
Cool! I didn't even know that the keyboardist was the same one as in Porcupine Tree! I saw them live last winter.

Along with Bowie, Ultravox, Magazine, Human League and Numan they kicked off the New Romantics movement

David Sylvian released some good solo albums but I don’t think they were any more popular than Japan. There have been a lot Japan TikTok videos over the last few months.

David Sylvian did a lot of great solo albums, Karn did Dalis Car with Peter Murphy from Bauhaus, Steve Jansen and Barbeiri did an album under the name Dolphin Brothers - all great experimental albums. Later they kind of worked together again in Rain, Tree, Crow. Sylvian also did som work with Riuchi Sakamoto from Japan - pretty good

They remember Sylvian because he stood out, his image and his good looks. The group was essential though, Mick Karn superior bass playing, Richard Barbieri keyboards, Rob Dean guitar, and Steve Jansens drumming. It all worked! Such a blow to music that as a group they chucked it in....
And there is just no replacing Mick Karn. So even if they wanted to do more in latter years, it wouldn't be the same. Thanks for hanging out, Todd.

Dalis Car is a great band Mick was in with singer Peter Murphy from BauHaus.

I love that song, too! Heck, I love the whole entire 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids' album!
The album version is a minute or two longer and definitely the better version. If you're a fan of Mick's bass work here you should check out his first solo album Titles - all the traits of his quirky and unique style are there. His second album Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters, the bass work is slightly less prevalent but the songs on the album are still brilliant.
This is a Great driving song. You should listen to Taking Islands in Africa. Heck, listen to the whole album. They influenced a lot of bands in the '80s. Duran Duran being the most famous band that copied Japan's look and style of music. Duran Duran made it big, but their music isn't as lasting as Japan's. It's been over 45 years when their first album came out and their music is still ahead of its time. Well, maybe not their first album, but definitely their 3rd album Quiet Life and the other following albums.
