Replacing 5000 bolts

  • The bolts in Vasa are rusting which weakens the ship. In order to stop the threat we are replacing over 5000 bolts, a time-consuming and not always easy job. The bolt change is a collaboration with Sandvik Materials Technology. For English subtitles, press "CC" and choose "English".

    Surprises me they added steel vs wrought iron or stainless or even bronze back in 1960’s

      Iron rot is a well known issue, I am surprised they regular bolts in the first place.

    Should have used Stainless steel bolts

      Rust wasn't necessarily the only reason to replace the bolts
      The wood on the ship gets damaged by different chemical reactions that were caused by the older steel bolts

      The old screws/bolts are from the 60's when they took the ship out of the water.
