The claim that human beings have or are an ‘immortal soul’ goes back to the ancient Greeks, if not further. In a pre-scientific world, it would seem absurd for our inner awareness not to continue, irrespective of what happens to our bodies. Today science rejects the soul, yet there are diverse viewpoints around.

The Hindu religion is embracing and pushing an extremist right wing nationalistic ideology and agenda in India, with all the racism, hate, intolerance, bigotry and potential for violence that always comes with extremist right wing nationalism. It's comforting to believe that the soul or consciousness is immortal beyond our very short time here but no one really knows and any claims that they do know no one can prove. Our beliefs about it don't matter because they won't and don't alter what really happens after we are gone.

One of the Hindu supreme deity who created this universe namely Shiva came on Earth, who chopped off his 'son's' head without knowing that the boy was his son.
Then this god Shiva, couldn't find son's head and replaced boy's body with an elephant head instead, that gives birth to 'Lord Ganisha", a 'human body-god with an elephant head', that is 'Lord Ganisha'. Now you know it.

Such a beautiful and lucid explanation. To the host’s questions on “why is it so”?. Well the answer is - We don’t know. We don’t know and will never know why the universe came into being, we don’t know why matter and anti matter get created in a perfect vacuum, we don’t know why the universe expands and we will never ever know the boundaries of the universe we inhabit. One of the well known hymns in Hinduism begins with 'Listen, Ye Children of Immortality...' because the Hindu idea of the soul is that it is eternal and is one with God already. The purpose of life is to discover our own immortal nature by purifying our hearts and minds through Knowledge (gyana yoga), Love (bhakti yoga), Meditation (raja yoga), and Selfless Action (karma yoga).

For instance, as a programmer I could indeed create a virtual realm.
But being a developer that creates a virtual realm, is not the same as a player experiencing the phenomena within that virtual realm.
That virtual realm was created for the sole purpose of experiencing it....rather than an exercise in programming....just because we have a programmer.
ie. The creator has no need for the created, unless that created serves the creators purpose.

Though i'm not religious, many of the most amazing people i've met in my life believe in things I do not, like god(s), immortal souls, etc. and it makes them no less amazing. That being said, I really think that those who wish for some experiential component of themselves to continue on into eternity after they die, have no real idea what they're wishing for or what that really means. This discussion, though, seems to suggest a metaphysical analog to the idea (one which I personally subscribe to) that we are merely collections of particles and fields, and when we die, those particles and fields will recombine with others to form different things in the future. However, this discussion also seems to suggest that, somehow, these particles "remember" aspects of their previous experiences, which sounds like metaphysical homeopathy to me.
It was still an interesting discussion, though (like most CTS discussions are). The last statement reminds me of Schopenhauer or Thomas Ligotti's "The Conspiracy Against The Human Race", and further supports a deep connection between philosophical pessimism and a lot of very interesting eastern thought.

    Not to detract from the karmic argument of the need to exist in the physical realm;
I think this is a human centric viewpoint rather than a creators viewpoint.
For me, in the realm of time and space, the fundament law that you can not escape, is to be in two places at the same moment in time.
However, there is a work around, if you wish to experience different aspects of being and/or observe the physcial realm form mutiple perespectives and locations.
That is to hitch a ride with a semi autonomous vessel (s).
Thus the need for an autonomous mind with the soul body as a link with the divine, is to enable the divine to experience the physcial realm.
Our own personal consciousness gets the gift of life as a bonus.
Result. At least... it could be. If we make the most of that.

The traditional scriptures of all religions tell us that we are souls, separate from the body.
All our experiences and the experiencer I who experience them, are from memory, they both belong to the same memory. Because of this, our sorrow, our fear, despair, lust, anger, attachment are all contents of memory. They are all not different from I. Therefore 'I' cannot control them. After understanding this truth of I, I no longer able to try to do anything else, I's existence ceases to exist. When I is not there, the sorrow, fear, despair, lust, anger, attachment generated by I disappear.

A soul exists. It’s energy. Energy isn’t physical. Energy isn’t matter. Energy can create matter. Everything is animated by energy. Your body dies but your energy doesn’t die. Materialism is a religion that has the odd belief that matter is having a personal experience. Materialism thinks you’re nothing but chemicals that magically want to know things like what’s the nature of reality. There’s intention behind energy not matter. Energy is the capacity to do work so matter can’t do anything without non physical energy.

God or the higher power is literally light, which permeates all things, even darkness which is why the light shines through.
Atoms have light internally, which means that God or the higher power, is in and through all things.
An immortal soul is a function of life and light and when the body dies it transitions to the spiritual world which is compatible with God or a higher power.. How we want to define it is strictly a matter of taste or religious interpretation.

I would think that for the purpose of this discussion, there must first be a definition of SOUL and immortality. Otherwise understanding is many times lost. For example, some people believe there is a soul. Some people believe there is no such thing. Some people think that only humans have a soul. None of these statements define what a soul is or what it is supposed to be. In common use in the USA, "soul" is commonly used to describe that which remains after death(usually human). Sometimes it is also used to describe living people. I have my own definition too and it is not so common.

Hi Dennis Tucker, I too saw the caption for this video and thought I should post a comment asking the same question!.
In some ways I am happy to offer a range of credible answers without further discussion. I will of course start by suggesting that as with so many other cognitive delusions and beliefs 'things' like souls do not exist at all within the boundaries of the physical universe we all inhabit any reality they do have is entirely within the domain of human awareness.
Because of this there is really very little traction to be found in any attempt to establish such things in terms of that physical reality, this alone makes it virtually impossible to establish any reliable verifiable definition! since the realms of human imagination have no material structure or form.
      Cheers, Richard.

@@catherinemoore9534 Hi Catherine Moore, what you say is entirely reasonable, much as I too think. There is one small issue that I will take up with you and that is the use of the words 'possibility'. It si a word which can n=be easily mis-understood, I think it might help to consider it in the context of some other words, in particular the word 'probability'.
What I am getting at here is the important differences in meanings, one is i-used to describe almost everything for which we have no reliable evidence the other for those that while there is no real evidence as yet the concept does not contradict any known theories. Thus because we are in fact 'aliens' in the sense that we have evolved on this planet in contravention of the 'normal' pattern of entropy such lifeforms could also exist elsewhere, thus aliens on other planet are not only possible but also probable. Then we have the possibility that like much else that we come up with all of our acquired knowledge of the physical world is complete fiction!, that everything we have thought of is pure fantasy, that reality is actually completely different. This idea is entirely possible but highly improbable. This based on the definition of possible being that it applies to everything we can think of is possible but most of it not probable.
For the reasons stated above then the soul as anyone describes it is possible!. The issue of doubt mostly applies to what we think we do know not anything about what we don't know, I am not absolutely sure of what I think does exist the rest I simply know nothing about.
      Cheers, Richard.

Death. It is absolutely certain everyone who is living will someday die, yet many people end up on their deathbeds with regret as if death somehow came out of nowhere or was a big secret no one let us in on.
We get in our cars and go to work every day, conditioned to think nothing bad will happen to us. Why would it? We’ve driven to work thousands of other times and nothing bad has happened. When thinking rationally, we think in statistics. “Well I’ve driven to work a thousand times and nothing bad has happened, chances are nothing bad is going to happen today”, but that’s not entirely true, is it? Just ask the thousands who’ve lost their lives to traffic accidents.
Nothing about life is certain or true except death.

Digha Nikaya, abridged Mahabharata, and Shiva Gita on my right, i'm guessing.
I just received a special book: The gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. He was a paramahamsa in the 1800s, and people considered him to be like a Krishna, Buddha, Christ, etc. during his time. What's incredible about this book is that there hasn't been a recited or record of such a sacred man's life & teachings in such detail and wealth of. Sri Ramakrishna was one of the first to synthesize all religions as being genuine paths to God realization, all seeking ultimately the same goal. He was an illiterate man with mysterious Knowledge & Wisdom as quiddity of his very being. Disciples spoke of his presence alone as uplifting and personality as spotless and pure.
The western world is materialistically impressive, and when it comes to mental evolution and Spirituality, but a mere toddler that cannot even stand.
There are those who will mock, and when confronted, are verily broken men on the inside.
Philosophy, Metaphysics, yoga etc.... God realization and such, are not meant for children.

First, Hinduism who knows where it came from, on the other hand the Abrahamic faith, we know where it came from and Jesus came to give witness and corroborated and taught us the reality of that God that is taught in the Old Testament. According to the Bible, we are made of two components, these are the person who comes from the male and female sexual cells and it is created inside a woman, and the spirit which is called the breath of the Almighty. There is no reercarnation in the Bible because we are not a spirit inside a body but we are a union of spirit and body. The spirit is not a person but the power God gives the person the capacity to be self aware and have an identity. This spirit returns to God at death and return to be reunited with the regeneration of the physical person at the resurrection.
