The Shahi Hammam, also known as the Wazir Khan Hammam, is a historic Turkish bath located in Lahore, Pakistan. Built in 1635 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan, it was commissioned by Ilam-ud-din Ansari, the chief physician to the Mughal Court, who was widely known as Wazir Khan.
Here are some key points about the Shahi Hammam:
Historical Significance: It was constructed as a waqf (endowment) to support the maintenance of the nearby Wazir Khan Mosque.
Architecture: The hammam features Mughal-era frescoes and a layout that includes a dressing area (jama khana), warm baths (nim garm), and hot baths (garm).
Restoration: The baths were restored between 2013 and 2015 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Walled City of Lahore Authority, with funding from the government of Norway.
Current Use: Although no longer used as a hammam, it is now a historical site and a testament to Lahore's rich cultural heritage.
