    Indeed, Monolith doesn't seem to be getting enough reviews and it's such an amazing library. Anything Richard Harvey does is really outstanding and so I expected great things from Monolith and got them.

    Great video Jesse, I’d love to see a breakdown to the isolated drums film cue you showed here to understand your approach to layering the sounds - I’m loving the library but it’s my first perc library and feels quite overwhelming to know how to approach this aspect of it!

    • @jessehaugen
      @jessehaugen  9 місяців тому +1

      When that film comes out I can probably do that! I typically just think of things in layers from a frequency perspective. The simplest, most grounded parts go low and infrequently, the busiest parts go high and are more subdivided, and then its variable in between. That's obviously not a holistic understanding, but its a good starting place!

    This library looks so appealing but I have terabytes of perc samples already, it's so hard to justify any new perc libraries even though this DOES sound incredible. Do you feel like this is offering something you can't already get from HZ Perc, Damage, Strikeforce.....(and like 10 other libraries)

    • @jessehaugen
      @jessehaugen  9 місяців тому

      Yeah I get it man haha
      To me, this occupies the very natural and “live” space that ISN’T traditional orchestral. I feel like the usual perc libraries (like the ones you mention) are either super processed/hyped/punchy cinematic perc or natural orchestral perc and this one kind of threads the needle as a very natural but not traditional perc library.
      That said, if you have all the others do you NEED this one? I dunno….
      If you got this would it have a place in the mix? Yeah prolly

  • @hzambrana

    @jessehaugen Question for you. Do you find yourself spending much time on selecting the mic positions? Are you just using the tree and maybe some close and / or other?

    • @jessehaugen
      @jessehaugen  8 місяців тому +2

      9/10 times the default mix works for me! When I need to go in, it’s usually just for some closeness so I’ll adjust accordingly.

    • @hzambrana
      @hzambrana 8 місяців тому

      @@jessehaugen Thanks man! And sorry just to confirm, when you say default mix do you mean just the tree mic or other? I just bought the ensembles now a la carte (wow what a sound), and there's a ton of mics but no actual "mix" mic.

    Hi ! I'm wondering how come it sounds so loud and great in your video without processing when it clearly doesn't on my computer. It's not the first time libraries seems to sound better in videos than in my DAW and I can't figure what the problem might be. The fact that many people process the sounds for the videos always led me to think that it was the why factor but yours seems to contradict that. If you've got any idea that could explain the "problem", I'm all ears !

    • @jessehaugen
      @jessehaugen  8 місяців тому +2

      This is a really good question, and I think it's important to think through. I've often noticed the same thing, and I have two guesses as to what's going on:
      1) I do an overall compression on my video as a whole in post which includes not just my voice mic, but also the recorded screen audio. So, while it's true for me to say I didn't do any processing in the DAW, technically the sounds you're hearing ARE being compressed along with all the audio in the video. This means, at the very least, it's going to sound louder in my video that your DAW. I also use a channel strip compressor for this, so it probably also has some nice subtle saturation going on. So yeah, just try adding some compression and I think you'll be closer to what you hear here!
      2) This answer feels suuuuuuper pompous and lame to type out, but I feel like no one talks about it. I used to have the same problem you're describing literally with another composer in the room. A guy I was working for would show me a new library right in front of me and it sounded amazing, but when he scooted over for me to try it, it fell flat. There is an art to playing samples, and it's something I've been working on and honing for years. Not sure that contributes here, but I do think it's worth mentioning!

    • @ExploratoriumTP
      @ExploratoriumTP 8 місяців тому

      @@jessehaugen Thanks for your fast and detailed answer ! The "art of playing samples" is super important and many people tend to disregard it completely or even sweep it under the rug like it's not even a topic. The only people talking about it generally limit that to "learn to play the piano" but it's not enough at all to use libraries correctly at their maximum potential. In any case, I'll try adding some slight compression but it's a matter I'm not yet very comfortable with ^^" If you've got any recommandations, I'll be pleased to ear them !

    • @jessehaugen
      @jessehaugen  8 місяців тому +1

      @@ExploratoriumTP of course! Happy to help.
      And don't be scared of compression! Honestly, throw on whatever stock compressor your DAW has and just crank it to hear what it's doing (using the gain or input knob). Then, just dial it back until it sounds good to you!
