We do tend to overlook or over hear the guitar solos in Maiden but when you focus on Nicko on this album in particular, holy smokes he is freaking killing it!
Gotta say, It’s Nicko’s influence that gave me my want to start drumming and playing music. I feel like this is one of the songs where all he had to do was keep a steady beat. Not saying it’s a weak performance because it takes a good player to keep you interested in a song that doesn’t really change much in tempo.
I think Nicko is phenomenal on the whole album. Maiden fan since way back, and I can't recall a previous album where his drums really hit me the way they do on this album.
This latest Iron Maiden album is among their best work. There are not many bands that have been around as long as Iron Maiden has who are still putting out such excellent material so late in their careers.
Steve Harris is a phenomenal composer, he has built these songs as a larger opus for decades now; his mastery of harmonic and melodic scales and chord structures is unparalleled in this modern age (in my opinion,) and he is known as the "taskmaster" when it comes to the band, (it is his band and vision, after all) yet he still leaves so much room for the musicians to embellish and add whatever they feel within the song structure, and it creates freaking magic! Thanks Doug, always love and appreciate your videos!
While he has that Mark Knopfler side to him, it also seems like he's totally game for any weird projects band members come up with. Bruce for a half hour on the piano? Fill that album, boi!
You "NICE!" reaction at 13:16 is exactlly the same as my reaction the first time I heard it. That long held "Met me thereeee" and the up tempo section after that is to me the best part of the album. Goosebumps every time I hear it... That's the power of Maiden!! It's been almost 5 months from the albums release and I still listen to it regularly and keep changing my favourite song between The Parchement and Hell on Earth... Just so epic!!!
"Fierce as wolf with a leopard skin" was the depiction given by romans to Mithridates who where exiled betreyed by his brother and mother after they kille his father. He were many times disapieed in the desert, but one day returned to Pontus with an incredible army to finished his revenge against his own family. Many references of this song to this historical man
The order of the solos in this one is: - Janick Gers then a break - Dave Murray (the really long solo) - Janick Gers short break - Adrian Smith then the long vocal section before the tempo picks up - Janick Gers (this one really sounds like his style, a lot of shredding) - Adrian Smith But it can be hard to tell without live footage. That's really the best way to figure out who plays which solo, but obviously that's not an option for these new songs yet.
I remember seeing Bruce say that he was getting feedback before the album was released that a lot of ("his")people loved this song and he was surprised because it was "very repetitive"! It is, but it develops such a mood and groove that it's hypnotizing, before it goes off elsewhere, and I love it. The song is about hellenistic king Mithridates or Mithradates VI Eupator . Was ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus in northern Anatolia from 120 to 63 BC, and one of the Roman Republic's most formidable and determined opponents.

Great reaction, as always, Doug. I would be interested in your reaction to some of Bruce's solo material. While almost anything from the Accident of Birth or Chemical Wedding albums would be great, perhaps Tears of the Dragon would be a nice song with which to start: a simpler song with one of Bruce's most soaring vocals....this was his "Solsbury Hill," reflecting on his decision to leave Maiden back in 1993. Very powerful stuff.
@@metalmark1214 Yes, and that was only early last year! Very impressive how strong his voice remains. There are other excellent versions out there too, including live with Tribuzzy. That being said, I think I still prefer the 1994 studio version.
Best song on the album. Nicko is an absolute best on this album and really drives this song hard. I’m hoping they play this next year when I go to see them. Absolutely brilliant album and to think that they’re still at the top of their game.
Please, please do Death of the Celts.....the composition is multi-layered and you get to hear 3 guitar solos, one from each of the protagonists....its such an underrated song, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Great channel as always Doug. 👍
The smoother Santna style riffs are usually Dave Murray, Adrian has a tight fast sharper sound with some of high power notes, Janick has a more free form fast technical style that blends elements of both Dave and Adrian yet has it's own feel.
Ok Doug solos go like this...fast fuzzy solos is Gers... Medium/fast melodic clear spread notes are Adrian. And fast shredding clear notes are Dave... Enjoy the quest...
Would love to hear a reaction to something from Sabaton. Most of their lyrics are history lessons and they are very detailed and deep. Maybe Bismark, Great War or even The Final Solution
Some guitar solo identification for you... The first three solos are Murray, then Gers, then Smith. The second set of solos near the end of the track are Gers, then Smith.
The Poison King - heard him mentioned in a video about Universal History days before hearing this track the first time. Very cool story. My favorite track so far is Darkest Hour, possibly as much for personal reasons as musically.

Yes, would like him to react to Tears of the Dragon. Have you seen on YT Bruce sing part of the song A capella?
Tears of the Dragon!! Definitely. It is an awesome song, fantastic music and vocals by Bruce. A must from his solo albums.
@@metalmark1214 Yes, and that was only early last year! Very impressive how strong his voice remains. There are other excellent versions out there too, including live with Tribuzzy. That being said, I think I still prefer the 1994 studio version.
@@jeffreygould101 I've seen both versions of Tears of the Dragon. Doug could do either one.
Tears of the dragon, definitely!
Great song! Thanks for reviewing it!
Iron Maiden review in church. Love it.
I'd love to see you react to Nick Johnston's "Remarkably Human" or anything from Nick Johnston for that matter. I think you would enjoy it!
I checked it out, pretty cool. You may like Blues Saraceno - A Lighter Shade of Plaid, if you unaware of him.
@@metalmark1214 I’ll check it out thanks!
This album has been fantastic!!
My favorite song !
Another good one.
Second part of this song is just unbelievable!!!!
Iron Maiden
The loneliness of the long distance runner
Please!
Best Iron Maiden song since When The Wild Wind Blows.
Epic. ;)
Meet me thereeeeeeee.. goosebumps
No reaction to Bruce's amazing vocal when he sings "Meet me theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere" WTF!
This is my favorite Maiden Song of all of them!
Whoa! That's quite a reverb. =)
The Best song 🤟❤️
Why am I only getting this response now by youtube. I am waiting for new maiden reactions a while and now i see this reaction is 2 month old. WTF
“MEEEET ME THEEEEEEEREEEEEE” … Bruce god Dickinson
Up the irons!
Esta música já faz parte da minha vida.
The smoother Santna style riffs are usually Dave Murray, Adrian has a tight fast sharper sound with some of high power notes, Janick has a more free form fast technical style that blends elements of both Dave and Adrian yet has it's own feel.
great song. Movie Soundtrack.
I didnt like this song that much at first.... but second time... booooom.... third time......... BOOOOOMMMM. Now praying to watch/listen live someday
I believe it's about the Crusades.
please
For the Great Good of God
and
Keeper of the Seven Keys
love your videos
keep on keeping on.
Great as always!
RECOMMENDED: Dave Grohl's mangum opus, "Play"
Ok Doug solos go like this...fast fuzzy solos is Gers...
Medium/fast melodic clear spread notes are Adrian.
And fast shredding clear notes are Dave...
Enjoy the quest...
Grab a bag 🎒 of popcorn 🍿 Sit back and enjoy another great Iron Maiden history lesson
The song reminds me of nomad off Brave new world
I pray this track is on the Future Past tour.
Doug
missing a few staples of the Maiden catalogue and live shows;
Ace's High
Powerslave
The Trooper
Maiden goes to church Monday!
Oh God of earth and alter...
Do King Diamond (I´ts like broadway but metal)
And very influential in the 80s.
You should really checkout and react to the song "The Tower" by Bruce Dickinson on the album Chemical Wedding.
Would love to hear a reaction to something from Sabaton. Most of their lyrics are history lessons and they are very detailed and deep. Maybe Bismark, Great War or even The Final Solution
No
Such an amazing album !!!!!!!!! I hated book of souls but absolutely adore Senjitsu
Hell on Earth please!!!!!
He did too
you should one video about Dimmu Borgir. Epic symphonic black metal
OZZY-Revelation ( mother earth ) learn the part for you and WOW your fans.
Definitely the best next Ozzy to do.
Some guitar solo identification for you... The first three solos are Murray, then Gers, then Smith. The second set of solos near the end of the track are Gers, then Smith.
You love iron maiden
please also Death of the Celts
Obra maestra
Dave is the guitarist with that very trilly style.
The Poison King - heard him mentioned in a video about Universal History days before hearing this track the first time. Very cool story.
My favorite track so far is Darkest Hour, possibly as much for personal reasons as musically.
