Albin Motor 021 in old swedish boat relaxing baltic ride

- The engine has been completely renewed with new old parts at kristinehamn by former Albin factory..Now works perfectly for the next 50 years! We use the boat daily since 1978 in summer for commuting, fishing, small trips.
Boat was made in Söderköping area in the 50's but I have no information regarding boatyard / builder unfortunately (if anyone has clues..?). The smooth wake seen at the end is showing how a neatly designed hull will just displace water without creating cavitation or disturbance, and pretty hypnotic to watch! (Propeller is brass 3 blades)
There is many boats like this ( called Snipa in swedish) for sale in the swedish list sites, for a range of 3-6 K € with engines, because no one seems to want to care for them anymore.
Since this video was taken in 2013, we have undergone much work: cleaning of the tar inside the boat ( in favor of linseed oil), cleaning the bottom that showed much weakness in the keel that lead us to glass the underside. The budget for keel replacement beeing unsustainable, same goes with the few broken ribs near the motor.
Winter 2017-18: the boat has seen more change: replacing of the 041 control panel for a 021 control panel, refurb of the propeller shaft brass rings ( there was too much play and vibrations), rework on the magneto that is sensible to heat changes.
Winter 2018-19: removing all the tar/dirt inside replaced by linseed oil
Winter 2019-20: will see the work on the outside varnish that will be totally redone, + rebuilding the bow seat ( that hold the gas tank).
Perfect! Gorgeous boat and engine.
When I began working as a marine mechanic in 2000, I had the pleasure of working with these engines a few times a year. Now I never see them. I really miss them a lot. I'm going to buy myself an oil filler cap and a reverse gear cover plate as a memory of those happy days.
When the engine good but a sleeping sound is coming from the engine , what could be wrong ? Dynamo ? Worn out engine parts inside ?
We have had too in 1960.....the Netherlands
When the engine was on average temp.a swing on the flywheel was enough for running
The sound could send me to sleep .... EASILY!
Very VERY nice indeed! :)
Wonderfully relaxing.
Good information about these boats too.
Thnx :)
She is a fine boat.I hope she serves your family well for many decades to come..
what a beautiful boat and motor
Just bought a sailboat with Albin O-22 engine, that needs transmission work. My wife and I live in a wooden Tollycraft Adventurer. I like the ending of your video.
Thnx! The adventurer is a big hull, how many knts can you get with the 022 in cruise speed?
I love your boat, motor and work plans for her. be safe and enjoy. always double check everything when working on boats I say. Bless you, Be Safe :)
Man.....that's as slick as it gets. Thanks for sharing.
very nice at 10 knots you barely leave a wake very cool congratulations a wonderful piece of history
+Kevin Romas (“Number 1 Detroit Red Neck”) thnx...the last part of vid was more at 7-8 knots...10 - 10.5 is really the max you can achieve. The hull pushes water after 8-9 knots but does not go really faster, and the frame starts to vibrate...
Actually it was 10-11 kilometers per hour (KPH/KMH), which is 5-5,5 knots. Anyway not bad!
I think the boat is probably 5-6 meters long, which makes it quite hard to get it up to more than 6 knots.
Nice video and good work on the overhaul!
happy motor, nice boat, you have a fine transportation there
Alldeles underbar motor, tack för uppladdningen
That’s real neat engine.
Beautiful. Thank you
x it im a lucky person who also owns an engine but no ,boat as yet to put it in but seening this vid has given me get up and do it . many thanks
hard to find nice little marine engines like this..very worthwhile .
Great boat! And a beautiful area for boating!
thnx indeed...also great for sailing, rowing and kayaking!
Detta ljud! ❤❤
Beautiful engine and lovely boat to go with it. Proper motorboat, not one of these plastic conservatorys you see in marinas that create more wash than the waves themselves!!
That putt putt sound is so nostalgic...
Beutiful sound! Ted....
Great motor.I have a albin 021k.I got it with the boat.
The motor is seized but I will try my hardest to revive it somehow.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
the quiet and smoothness of a gas engine is highlighted here... the advantages are high power to weight ratio, simple fuel system, low compression . lower fuel use and freedom from explosive fuel.. ( with a diesel) are traded for these other attributes, we see how pleasant that can be, here - where a light weight hull is married to a "light weight" gas engine.. which is still plenty heavy enough to satisfy those of us who love longevity !
thnx that is an interesting angle...Indeed the engine is so light and simple compare to it's diesel variant..! I will try to pass her to the next generation and hopefully they will grab on that longevity thing..Fiberglass / aluminium boats we have are just for utility and could be replaced / gone without any feelings..
Cool!! wish I had some of your swedish cod, caught an hour ago, for breakfast right now! :) :)
love it great boat, i am buying a 24ft timber boat with thornycroft diesel
will try to do the crank start when i'm near the boat!
Experts might have noticed the control panel is that of an Albin 041 engine..switching to a new 021 model soon
snygg liten julle
работает как швейцарские часы!
Sweet
ljuvligt! :o)
Sounds great! Sell me that motor ! :) hi from Canada!
lunkertime you can find some offers in Netherlands where they have many still. :)
I smell the sea!
What is the crank behind the engine? It it for a variable pitch prop?
Noell Wilson nope it is a fixed prop. it's just the manual crank start..it was a rare option some people had. Usually you start it manually from front of engine with removable handle that is connected directly on the flywheel. It is not so easy to manual start because the flywheel is very heavy anyway...am glad it has electric start!
sweet
Is this engine in first Albin Vegas?
Hello, I believe the first engine in the Albin Vega was a 5hp albin engine ( likely the mono cylinder) then switched to this 021/022 engine for more torque and power, before switching to Volvo Penta when or before Volvo Penta took over Albin motor and killed it...From what I heard Volvo could not get people to switch to their engines while people used Albin, and the best way to win over competition is to purchase it and kill it...
@@loftalofta8423 Sad story.
vad är det för träslag du använder som Motorkåpa??
The wood engine box is pine wood that is varnished ( the same kind that the hull is made of)..It has so many layers of varnish that it is almost waterproof...But the boat sleeps under a roof , and I have a vinyl cover for rainy days so not really an issue. The inside of the wood box is saturated with linolja ( lineseed oil) and some engine oil that got there over the years. This summer i have a new control panel, new start engine, new sparks so it should be more reliable!
Beautiful! What top speed does it have?
+kingmaster1231 Top cruise speed around 9 kn, can reach 11 at full speed but the engine is a bit too strong for the hull/ frame, and vibrations get very high. Over 9 knots the hull pushes too much water and the speed gain vs noise/vibration makes it unbearable.
+nils lofta That's pretty fast! Higher than the hull speed, I guess? Does it planish?
+kingmaster1231 no planning at all its a full displacement hull..yes the hull is overpowered, regular cruise speed is more like 7 kn..It would work well with an albin 1 cylinder too I guess..what is nice is the stern seats very low on water like 15cm above water, typical of the swedish traditional hulls. You can barely see where you go the front beeing so high above water!
+nils lofta Thanks for answering! Last thing I can say: Be careful with your boat and keep enjoying it! Wonderful nature over there and the Albin sounds lovely :) Keep uploadings video's like this!
cool
so you dishonor the builder by glassing the bottom .. ahh his ghost will come over to haunt you..ha ha
This is why its under the waterline, so builder can't find out from where he is ;)
😁👍☕
Broken ribs port bilge.
Chris Harwood yes..Been there for 40 years but holds ok...Just can't change them without massive overhaul so since the boat holds up and doesn't get to see very rough waters I guess it will hold another 100 years :)
rather too many cracked ribs at the turn of the port bilges for my happiness
Chris Busby yes has seen life...full restoration of the hull would cost too much...:(... it is also leaking lots, am considering planting the lower painted part of the hull by a local expert....you stop leaks under the waterline, and you cannot see the plastic if it is well done and well painted
