That's insane. When I first heard her speak English, I was so amazed at how fluent she already was (pretty much before the other 3 were as good as they are now). And now I learn she also speaks Japanese! She must work really hard and study well!
That's really cool! That really does make the group international in scope. I am glad she can speak Japanese so fluently. She will get better with time, too. :)
I don't count the stuff she said on the show, as most of it would likely have been rehearsed, so it is not her own grammar ability; though it is obvious she understands what she is saying, not just reading phonetically, or parroting several phrases she memorised by heart, like many other idols would do for a performance in a foreign country. From what I heard her say in the cafe, unscripted, I'd say she's around... intermediate? She had some grammar mishaps (e.g. マヨありますで vs correct マヨあり), and sometimes she pauses even mid-word to think about what she's saying, and it was fairly basic conversation... but she ordered competently and got herself understood without any issues, which is the goal after all. Her English is definitely better; but I was still very pleasantly surprised, especially given that there is no Japanese member in her group to learn from and practice with. Major props to her being brave enough to order by herself. From a tiny clip I heard of Yeji, Chaeryeong and Yuna speaking on a video (clearly scripted), their pronunciation is pretty good except for ts/z, which many Koreans have trouble with (e.g. にがちゅ vs correct にがつ); Yeji also tends to forget long vowels, which is important in Japanese but not in Korean (バレンタインデです vs correct バレンタインデーです). I haven't seen a clip of them speaking impromptu, like Ryujin has, so it is hard to judge their level, but I am fairly convinced Ryujin is better than them.
@@AmadanMath Japanese-American here, I think this assessment is pretty much spot-on. Ryujin's Japanese is okay, but she's definitely still learning and not fluent yet (no hate, I'm not fluent either).
It's OK that there is no subs for English on this. I don't need them as I don't know Korean or Japanese either. She just sounds kinda sexy in Japanese.
