  • Sock yarns without nylon sort of scared me... until now! In this video, I review Mondim by Retrosaria. This beautiful sock yarn is 100% Portuguese wool and non-superwash and it creates an amazing fabric. In this video, I share all of my thoughts on this yarn!
If you have experience knitting socks without nylon content in the wool, leave a comment below! I would love to hear from you.

I'm portuguese so when I started knitting socks this was the first one I looked at, it's quite cheap (when compared to imported yarns ofc) my socks tend to felt a little on my heels but no holes so far and Ive used/washed them quite a bit, Ive also made garmets with this yarn from summer tops to sweaters (with mohair) and I definitely don't think you will have hitchy-ness problems unless you are SUPER SUPER SUPER sensitive (bonus with this yarn: I grew up near quite a few sheep farms and I can attest to them being generally very well taken care of, so I'd say animal consicous-people can trust portuguese yarn!) Thanks for the appreciation for the country btw this video was lovely

Wow! Thank you for all of that information and your experience with the yarn.... and for the compliment on the video 💚 I am curious how mine might felt in the more sensitive areas. I wonder if that actually ends up making them a bit more durable in the long run. I can't wait to find out!

I only use 100% natural yarns for socks and never get holes in my going outside socks! I use mostly Socks That Rock which is very high twist and have used this for years. For bed/house socks I use DK or fingering with normal twist and these will wear after 5 years or so but I’m fine with that. I hate nylon and as as being allergic to it find sock yarns with nylon aren’t comfortable and wear unevenly. Nylon is definitely not a necessity and wish more companies would just make higher twist natural sock yarn. I am wanting to try Mondim just wander if it will be soft enough for me (Regia or Opal are too hard).

I absolutely love this wool for socks. I love the feel and the colours and have knit 4 pairs so far. I also find these socks keep my feet a little warmer than ones made with superwash wool. I also made a DK pair by adding Katia Concept mohair which has nylon in it for added strength on my “slipper” sock.
Can’t wait to add more colours to my stash. Love your videos 🤓

I LOVE this review! The detail in your description is so amazing! I just picked up two balls of mondim from my LYS recently. I'm planning to knit one pair with just the mondim and another, I want to try to hold with a strand of silk mohair to make them fuzzy and see how the durability compares.

Great review and your socks look amazing. I am not a big fan of superwash so I am excited to find a substitute at such an affordable price and all those colors. I am thinking of getting the heathered Navy when it's back in stock.

Ooo I'm excited to try this! I love non-superwash and rustic yarns mainly because I am still mesmerized my spit-splicing lol...which might not be so important for socks BUT I would still love to check this out.

I love Mondim - I'm working on a 2nd pair of them right now (and have several more planned). An extra bonus is that it's even affordable in Canada - I got it for $16/ball from a LYS, which is like $12.50USD. Often yarn that's $14 in US is $20+ in Canada. I'd definitely make a garment out of Mondim, once I'm feeling up to a fingering weight sweater...

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this review!! I love socks and hesitate to stray away from 75/25 (I’ve used 80/20 and blew through the heel in one season and I’m a tight knitter). I appreciate this video and I appreciate you. After learning that a substantial percentage of the plastic in our waterways comes from laundering clothing with plastic (anything synthetic), I've made an effort to only buy and knit natural materials. I was stumped when it came to my sock knitting because of the durability problem, so thank you thank you thank you. I'm giving Mondim a try!

Thank you for this! I love Mondim! I made a shawl with it recently, on size 4 needles, and love the body and loft (and general squishy coziness) of it. I have actually not tried it for socks, as I am just now venturing into sock knitting. I am definitely considering Mondim for a sweater. I have somewhat sensitive skin, but the Mondim does not feel scratchy at all.
Note: I also made a shawl last year using Retrosaria Mungo. I appreciate companies with strong sustainable values, and who avoid using synthetics.

Oh wow the yarn sounds wonderful, will have to give it a try, haven't done socks in in awhile, wanting to make some. I actually started knitting and my very first project was socks the pattern was out of a small how to booklet with a green cover it taught just about everything in it of course that was about fifty years ago. The socks came out huge guess I used the wrong needles and yarn but that was ok there just happened to be a large boy that was mentally challenged, my sister's husband brother and his hand and feet were big and they had a hard time getting socks and mittens yup did those too, these two items fit him perfectly. So that was when I first started knitting. Now I know a lot more than I used to, so I can't wait to make more socks after a couple years to try this yarn. Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate your help on and about this yarn. 🤗🤗🤗💞💞💞

Hi Caleb - thank you very much for your review! I‘m very curious about your test wear! I already knitted some socks with the Mondim yarn. I very much liked the feel and touch of the yarn too. But after wearing my freshly knitted socks I was very disappointed … after a very short period I had holes in both socks. So I repaired them, but after some days of wearing the same thing again: holes in a different spot. Maybe I knitted them too loose, but for me the final opinion was: a wonderful yarn for any other project than socks! So I hope your wonderful socks will be a bit more durable than mine. Then I would give the yarn another try with socks …

One sock now has a hole in the heel, but it’s because one of the strands broke…it’s not like the wool in the area wore out. but I think it’s not bad considering how much I wore them. I wish I loved this yarn, but I really, really disliked it. I purchased a sweaters quantity from La Bien Aimee for Max's So Basic sweater. From the moment I opened the bag, I knew it was way too scratchy and rustic. Hoping it would soften and bloom when blocked, I powered through and finished the sweater, but no, it didn't soften at all. I was so bummed that I didn't choose Aimee's softer fingering merino instead. I keep looking to see if I am the only one that dislikes it, and to this day, yes, I believe I am the only one that dislikes it. But that's okay, lol.

I love knitting socks. They make fantastic year round gifts but I have never knit socks with 100% wool. So I'd be VERY interested. I wonder howd they keep for camping...

Going to order the yarn from wild hand got a 15 % discount and shipping to my house is $3.80 so added up to $15 and change. Thanks

I love Mondim! I would say the only downside is that the yarn makes for slow knits as I can't stop touching the fabric it creates as I knit... Over the years, it has become one of my staple socks yarns. If you enjoy the Mondim, definitely test the Retrosario Vovo yarn as well!

Your socks turned out nice…and like I said before, look forward to your 30 days wearing the same socks video. I predict a heel hole, but let’s see 🤔

I would be interested in how much you wear the socks without shoes vs. with shoes. I make 100 percent wool socks from my homespun. I find them to be durable, but my family knows I don't allow them to run around in just sock feet. I feel that not wearing a protective slipper contributes to sock damage.

Would you also give us "Brian's Softness Report" (he doesn't have to come on but his opinion is always helpful) when you give us the 30 day results?
I love it when you review yarns but am always going to want Brian's Softness Report because his opinion on the hand of the yarn seems very similar to mine.

When you say sensitive do you mean allergic?

No. Some people just find wool itchier than others.

I knitted socks using 100% merino wool, first day I wore them I got a hole in the heel. Went back to using 75% wool with 25% nylon.
