Art and design is a yin and yang of abstract beauty and literal structure. Art is almost always left ambiguous, as to incite thoughts and feelings that transcend culture and individual experience. Meanwhile, design is always structured to concisely convey purpose and meaning in a form that is easily digestible. What we appreciate in games, movies, posters, etc. is not just the art or the design but the harmonious intersection of both.

i wouldn't agree that art has to be beautiful - what about the grotesque? or marcel duchamp's work? a message conveyed well can be art, too. otherwise I love your essay, great video
There is a much simpler and more capacious solution to this question: - design is for the poor, and art is for the rich. Because design is everyday life and the ordinary, and art is symbolism and the eternity of the chosen and glorified.
All art is design, but not all design is art. Why do I think all art is design? Because without proper structure, it will not achieve it's function which is to convey expression. But why not all design is art? Rocket design isn't art.
I think what differs between art and design is usefulness, Art is something nice to have but a design is an important part of making a useful product that benefits the customer and have proper function
