    Wao Dedan your thinking from 15 -18 mins is exactly like mine ... I've been in network/infrastructure/security for a while and done couple of IT, network/security certifications, they expire as usual. Then one day, I said to myself why not get something that does not expire. So I decided to do a master in Networks and computer systems security. Like you said, I did my master degree with zero expectation of making extra money from it. But at least it will not expire, my children will understand my degree and it does feel good to say you're a professional with masters degree. New comers are lucky to have virtualisation environments, so my advice to them will be to self study, get industry certifications and maybe get a degree.

    Networking is so fundamental to every aspect of IT but so few IT guys only have the most basic layer 1 understanding.. I did a "TCP/IP Networking Fundamentals" course as part of my masters, and it was invaluable in my job.

    Even at his level he is CONSTANTLY studying and learning. Plus he was checked at the interviews also by the Cisco Management who all had CCIE's who couldnt be bluffed about the info for doing the job. You get to a point in which you MUST KNOW THE CRAFT.

    2:20 YES! So many applicants who wrote down BGP on a resume and I ask, "what is the difference between eBGP and iBGP" and the answer I always get, "iBGP is internal and eBGP is external" lol Worst cast scenario I'm looking for "same AS vs different AS" and then some attributes that do or do not transfer. So good man! I love BGP.

      To anyone that may come back to this video, my specialty was around Systems WinTel Engineering. Just go dig into all the free online labs and tutorials/books available to you. You do NOT need a college degree to learn this stuff. As I’ve grown into a manager, I’m lucky in that I get to still be more technical - and that I get to work more closely with the Networking/TelCo side of things too. If you love Infrastructure- go for it. If it’s just a money goal - find something else, because you DO stay busy.

    I retired from the Navy in 2011 and looking to get in to the IT Field. I have my Security+, network+ and I'm working on my CCNA. I have always wanted to get in to networking while in the Navy but was not a allowed to cross rate(change job). My concern now is that I'm "too old" to enter in to the networking field because of so many applicants who are much younger and just entering the workforce. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @townman1
      @townman1 7 років тому +4

      I was in the Navy , left a good career and decided to start over , went to college got my degree and started at IBM , never looked back ,did some great work for DOD, DOJ , during the shooting war . I have zero regrets. You are only too old when you are dead.

    I just have a lowly diploma from a technical college. 31 years so far. Currently working at my retirement job mining emergency department data. What tools do I use you ask? I build my own with a compiled language. Products like Tableau or Crystal Reports are for people to stupid to write code.

      Just being sarcastic. Learning how to code takes a lot of practice. If you enjoy doing, you will probably get good at it.
