By an odd coincidence, Katharine Hepburn was fifty-five when she made this film -- exactly the age that her character Mary Tyrone is supposed to be. (Six years later, when she played Eleanor of Aquitaine in "The Lion in Winter", at 61, she was exactly the age that Eleanor was in 1183, the year in which the film was set.) She would surely have won her second Best Actress Oscar for it, if she hadn't been up against Anne Bancroft in "The Miracle Worker". (Anything relating to disability is Oscar gold). Pauline Kael summed up this extraordinary performance perfectly: "Watching Hepburn's extraordinary transitions in this film -- her ability to look eighteen or eighty at will -- one can understand why the title 'the divine' has been applied to certain actresses over the centuries."

I have admired Katharine Hepburn for the past 40 years, she was one of a kind. I think Spencer Tracy had a part in how great she was after she met him. I don't think he told her what to do, she just improved by keeping up with how great he was.

Also the extensive theater she did. And outside of Broadway too.

Many people feel that Bette Davis deserved the 1962 Best Actress Oscar for “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” I don’t for a minute deny the brilliance of that performance, but my own vote would have gone to Hepburn for “Long Day’s Journey into Night” - an astonishing performance that raises acting to Olympian heights.

Love this play, but damn, is it emotionally exhausting, in the beat way.
