    Pavarotti & Friends was a series of benefit concerts hosted by Luciano Pavarotti between 1992 & 2003 in his home town of Modena, Italy. Proceeds from the events were donated to humanitarian causes including the international aid agency War Child & the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The concerts featured Pavarotti performing with special musical guests & each concert was released as a compilation album & DVD.
    The Pavarotti & Friends for the Children of Liberia was held on 9 June 1998, in support of the War Child charity, specifically to benefit the orphans of war-torn Liberia. The concert was directed by Spike Lee & featured guest performances by Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Jon Bon Jovi, Spice Girls, Trisha Yearwood, Natalie Cole & The Corrs. The concert was broadcast on BBC & PBS & on syndication in the US.
    Luciano Pavarotti (12 October 1935 - 6 September 2007) was an Italian tenor who during the late part of his career crossed over into popular music, becoming one of the most acclaimed tenors of all time. He made numerous recordings of complete operas & individual arias, gaining worldwide fame for his tone & gaining the nickname King of the High Cs.
    From the beginning of his career as a tenor in 1961 in Italy to his final performance of Nessun dorma at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, he was at his best in bel canto operas, pre-Aida Verdi roles & Puccini works such as La bohème, Tosca, Turandot & Madama Butterfly. He sold over 100 million records. Pavarotti was also noted for his charity work on behalf of refugees & the Red Cross. He was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1988. He died from pancreatic cancer.
    Celine Dion (born 30 March 1968) is a Canadian singer. She is noted for her powerful & technically skilled vocals. Dion is the best-selling Canadian artist & the best-selling French artist of all time.Her music has incorporated genres such as pop, rock, R&B, gospel & classical music.
    Born into a large family (she is the youngest of 14 children) from Quebec, she emerged as a teen star in her country during the 1980s. She gained international recognition by winning the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival & the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented Switzerland. After learning English, in 1990, Dion released her debut English album, Unison. She has also sung in Spanish, Italian, German, Latin, Japanese & Mandarin Chinese.
    During the 1990s, she achieved worldwide fame after releasing several best-selling albums in history, such as Falling into You (1996) & Let's Talk About Love (1997), with over 30 million sales each. She also scored a series of no1 hits, The Power of Love, Think Twice, Because You Loved Me, It's All Coming Back to Me Now, My Heart Will Go On & I'm Your Angel. D'eux (1995) became the best-selling French album of all time. A New Day... on Las Vegas (2003-07), remains the highest-grossing concert residency of all time & the Taking Chances World Tour (2008-09), one of the highest-grossing tours of all time.
    Dion is also one of the best-selling artists of all time, with sales of more than 200 million. Dion is regarded as one of pop music's most successful vocalists. She won 5 Grammys. Billboard named her the Queen of Adult Contemporary for having the most no1 songs for a female artist. Dion is the 2nd best-selling female artist in the US, the 8th all-time best-performing top female artist in the US & the 6th all-time best-performing female soloist in Billboard 200 history. In 2003, she was honored by the IFPI for selling over 50 million albums in Europe.
    She was named after Hugues Aufray's song Céline.
    She was bullied at school & called Vampire, owing to her teeth & skinny frame.
    Celine & Rene married in 1994. In 2000, they renewed their wedding vows.
    After Rene's diagnosis with cancer she took a break from the bussines in 2000.
    She gave birth to René-Charles, in 2001. Dion suffered a miscarriage in 2009. In 2010, gave birth to twins. Named Eddy (after songwriter Eddy Marnay) & Nelson (after Nelson Mandela).
    On 14 Jan 2016, Rene died of throat cancer. 2 days later Dion's brother, Daniel, died aged 59, also of cancer.
    Dion cites as her idols: Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Charles Aznavour, Carole King, Anne Murray, Barbra Streisand & Bee Gees.
