    Great video, David. Really enjoyed your adventure. Flooding aside, loved seeing the new Spring flowers and hearing all birds. Looks like Bailey and Jaden had a great time as well. Thanks for sharing your second backpacking trip of 2019!

    Another great adventure, and this time close to home. Thanks for sharing! Awesome that you were able to share the trail with your four-legged family. Our rottweiler's days of hiking with me are over. Age caught up to him and he sleeps more than anything. This reminds me of all the great hikes (albeit not backpacking) that we had together over the last 12 years and brings a smile to my face.

    I picked up the Altra LP 4s a couple of months ago for the same reason, wide toe box and lightweight. I hope to do a second trip this next weekend. My feet did super well but I ended up with shin splints after my first 15-16 mile day. I don't believe I can completely blame that on the shoe though. Its always nice to see your trip video reports!

      That's really cool! I love that shelter. I think the little critters stayed away from me because I had two big 'critters' on either side of me all night, and now that I think about it I've never had mice problems at that shelter... and probably for the very same reason - I've always had the dogs with me.

      Hey Andrew! That was a great night at the shelter. Thank you for bringing the fireball and apple juice - real treat! And added some humor around the fire. I was wondering about you guys the next day - it started raining right when I pulled into my driveway, and the temps dropped from the 60's to 40's. Knowing the miles you had to put in that next day I was pretty sure you were still on the trail when that stuff moved in. I was wondering how your improvised 'bivy sack' would hold up in the rain? Thanks for watching the video.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      I'm just finishing up the 2nd video with the Z6 (Big South Fork). It should be published by this weekend, and I think it is a huge improvement from my first go with it on the Tecumseh. Unfortunately, I managed to pull a bonehead move with my external Rode microphone - I didn't put a new battery in it prior to the trip (duh!) and managed to run it out about halfway through the trip. It still seemed to work according to the audio meters, but what I didn't realize until I started the editing is that the dying battery created some noise artifacts (clicks) for some of the first night and 2nd day. Fortunately, the good folks at the Charit Creek Lodge (2nd night) were able to get me a new battery and all was good after that. I 'fixed' much of the bad audio stuff with some creative editing, but some of it was unavoidable. No fault of the Z6. Aside from that I think most of the Z6 video is really impressive in the new video. I've basically gotten to the point with the Z6 that I'm controlling everything manually - exposure, color balance, and even focus. A little bit of extra work on the trail, but the better results are worth it. Still wrestling with the poor image stabilization, but I found some very useable off-board stabilization software that did a pretty good job. I'm heading to Yellowstone next week and I'm hoping all of my field experience with and knowledge of the Z6 will make the Yellowstone video really special (and I will certainly have a brand new battery in the microphone!).

      Thank you for the kind words. Fortunately, I think a lot of the 'learning experience' from this one was mainly caused by 'pilot error' and not the new equipment. The Z6 is a complex beast and it certainly takes some time to get to know it. The sound issues were almost entirely from having the microphone gain too high which caused clipping. The video issues in a few spots were caused by a variety of mistakes on my part, but the new 6-stop neutral density filter I have now will fix a lot of that (the over-exposed clips). More knowledge on my part, much of which I gained on the Tecumseh 'test hike', will also go a long way toward making the next video much improved on quality. I have Big South Fork coming up at the end of May and then Yellowstone NP at the end of June - can't wait!

    Hey David fellow Nikon Z6 user, I just wanted to let you know that you can turn off the manual focus on the lens control ring. Go to menu->custom setting menu->controls->custom control assignment. You can then turn off the annoying manual focus problem and if you touch it afterwards it won't do anything! Hope this helps!

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      Whoa...! Great idea. I had found the ability to turn manual focus override off with the a13 option under the Autofocus controls section ('Manual Focus Ring in AF Mode' control) but it only works with certain lenses, and apparently my F-mount 20mm Nikkor isn't one of them because the a13 option isn't even present for me. I hadn't thought about doing it via the extensive custom controls menu that they give you, but I think that will work just fine (I rarely use manual focus, and if/when I do I can just turn it back on). Thank you!

      Sadly, I tried to modify that setting on the camera last night and the option doesn't show up for me - another downside of using 'adapted' lenses with the FTZ adapter, I suppose. (And another reason to buy a Z lens - though I'm waiting for the 24mm Z-lens to be available later this year).

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      Yeah, not sure what happened with all the focus motor noise. It wasn't present for much of the trip, but decided to get gnarly during some of the really quiet scenes. The whole trip was a bit of an educational exercise with the Z6, and there was a period of time where I somehow managed to unlock and slightly shift the FTZ adapter I was using - I figured it out when autofocus went away completely, but I'm thinking the focus motor noise might have been an early symptom that I just didn't catch. On future trips I plan to do a lot more manual focusing for those stationary, tripod-mounted shots to eliminate any potential for focus motor noise.

    I hiked the Low Gap last Sunday. Nothing but mud. I also broke my fibula about 5 1/2 miles out. So a 5 mile walk back to the car. I’m laid up for 6 weeks but I’ll go back when it’s dry.
    Nice to see a new video while I can’t get out. I think I like the old camera better.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      Ouch! I can't imagine the pain you must have had on that walk back to your car. But I can see how that could have happened. I slipped many, many times and got lucky that I didn't have any bad falls. Regarding the Z6 camera, I'm still getting to know it and I think the quality on future trips will be much improved. The biggest issue was that I needed a neutral density filter to keep the scenes from getting over-exposed (which you'll see often in the early clips on this video, not so much later on as I became sensitized to it), and I now have a great ND filter that I'll use on the upcoming trips. I also found a nice hand grip that I'll be using instead of hand-holding it which will really help with stability.

    • @jimg4704
      @jimg4704 5 років тому

      David Gray the high contrast was what was a bit too much for me so the ND will help. I liked the video anyway. I really like your videos they help me get through bad days.
      The pain wasn’t too bad until I got home. It doesn’t help my training for Colorado. I’m already loosing muscle mass. Ticks me off. Have a great week and can’t wait for the next video 👍

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      @kragseven I agree. I actually always have some sort of a filter on all my lenses to protect the glass - typically just a high-quality B+W UV filter. I also always carry a circular polarizing filter and a 'heavy' (10-stop) ND filter for long time exposures in daylight. On this trip I actually used the polarizing filter most of the time - it gave me about 2 extra f-stops of exposure range, but it was clear it wasn't enough. I bought a 6-stop ND filter right after I got back, and actually just walked in the door from a test hike with it.

    • @jimg4704
      @jimg4704 5 років тому

      David Gray I will say it’s troubling seeing people giving this or any of your videos a thumbs down. I haven’t seen anything I’d take the time to give someone a bad review given the time and effort that goes in to making a video like this.
      I can’t get out right now as I’ve mentioned, so any hiking video is awesome to me. Do a loop hike video at Turkey Run sometime. I’d like to see what you’d do there. Oh there’s a buffet at the Inn so no need for packing in a stove

      I have never done any backpacking there, and have only 'hiked' in the Everglades while passing through on a couple car trips to the Florida Keys many years ago. It would certainly be something quite 'different' for me to do a backpacking trip there - I'll have to do some more research on it, and try to work it into my trip agenda in the upcoming years (perhaps as a side trip during a spring break visit).

      Unfortunately, no Glacier NP trip this year. I actually applied for a Glacier permit in case I didn't get either a Wonderland Trail or Enchantment Wilderness permit (I didn't end up getting either permit), but for the first time in 4 attempts I crapped out on a Glacier permit too - bummer! I could go for a walk up permit but that is a lot of travel and expense to take that type of a chance, especially when I wanted to go to one specific area that I haven't been before (Two Medicine area). I'm thinking now about heading back to the Wind River Range in late August or early September to do the original hike we had planned there for the Titcomb Basin area.

    I enjoy your backpacking adventures. I know you just got the new camera but yes, it was shaky and hard to auto focus plus lighting seemed hard to adjust. I thought your camera from last season did a great job. I've seen You Tubers using just their Samsung 8 camera and you could not tell it was shot from a cellphone. Nikon does not impress me anyways. Sorry. But hey, no complaints about your adventures or photography shots... Always waiting for the next hike with you. Mark Tonopah , AZ

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      Yes, the new camera was/is certainly a work-in-progress, but I think I've learned from most of the mistakes in this first effort, and I'm confident the next go-around in the Big South Fork at the end of May 2019 will be much, much improved. The Z6 is capable of some amazing stuff if 'driven' properly.

      That pack being out of balance always drives me crazy! And it doesn't seem to matter how much effort I put into making sure both sides are perfectly balanced... it always goes to one side or the other. But it never seems to bother Bailey - she is just happy to be out there on the trails hiking with me.

      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      No need to apologize - I appreciate the feedback. Certainly still a work-in-progress with the new camera but I think it was more 'driver error' on this trip than inherent weaknesses with the Z6. The audio issues were mainly caused by me setting the microphone gain too high which caused clipping. The video quality issues in a few spots were caused by a variety of issues, but I'm working to address each of them prior to the next trip. I agree that the 'ol Canon Vixia G40 I had used before is an awesome camera, but I still believe that when dialed in properly the Z6 can create equally good, if not better, quality. That is certainly my objective.

    Can you hang a hammock by shelter or do you have to stay inside the shelter?

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      There are plenty of places to hang a hammock around the shelter, as well as flat tenting spots. You aren't required to stay in the shelter. In fact, given the right circumstances (have the shelter to yourself) I'm sure you could figure out a way to hang a hammock inside the shelter (I've seen it done in shelters on the AT multiple times).

    I live in the Cincinnati area,near Kings Island if you know where that is. This looks like a good hike that is reasonable close to my home for a weekend trip. Do you think the water sources would be available in the summer or would you have to cache a water supply half way? I enjoyed your video.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      Been to Kings Island and Cincinnati many times - great places! Regarding water, it depends on what section of the Tecumseh/Low Gap Trail that you plan to hike. It can get really dry in late summer and fall, but there are still a few reliable water sources along the way. I've been to the Foxes Den shelter many times, at all times of year, and have never seen the stream there completely dry. Bear Lake and Yellowwood Lake are always reliable sources. And that river that we had to cross on the railroad bridge always has water in it, as does the stream at the southern end of Indian Hill. The only place where it can get really rough, and caching might be needed, is on the Low Gap loop area at the far northern end of the Tecumseh - I've seen every creek and stream on that loop be bone dry in late summer and fall.

    Great Video. Now you will have to go back to Glacier NP and record a hike in 4K ;-)

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      I would really like to do that! But I don''t think it's going to happen in 2019. I actually applied for a Glacier permit again this year, but for the first time ever (in four attempts) I get totally shut out on the permit - bummer. I could go for a walk-up permit but with all the expense and time required to get to Glacier I'm going to do something else this year (likely Wind River Range in late August/early September), and then go for a permit again in 2020. I do have firm trips coming up to Big South Fork at the end of May and Yellowstone NP at the end of June so I'll have some opportunities to see what the new camera can do in some more scenic destinations.

    An option for you to stabilize is use a handheld steadycam. You can find ones that are amazing at stabilizing

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      I've actually been looking at them too, since the first test hikes with the camera. I'd like to avoid adding more weight/cost/complexity but it may be the best option in the end. As a more simple and lighter solution I've been trying to find a hand grip for the camera, which will allow me to keep the camera much more stable than simply holding it in my hand - the shape and mass of the lens make it difficult to keep steady, especially while actually moving on the trail. I went through 5 different hand grips before I finally found one that seems like to will work while hiking. I'll use it on the next trip.

      Unfortunately, not certain where to get something like that nowadays, but I can say that I have two plastic tubes for the Ritz that are very similar. The 2nd one I actually found at Walmart as the packaging for a 'sham-wow' shammy-lie towel in the automotive area - I'm not sure if they still have them or package them like that but you could look there. I can't remember where I found the first tube I had (and the one I use on trips now because it's a few grams lighter than my other tube).

    Does anyone know how far the fox den shelter is for where the tecumseh and low gap split off?

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      It's about 6 miles from that point (which is called the 'Wedding Chapel', by the way - not sure why or where the name originates from) to the shelter. The stretch from the Wedding Chapel corner over to Fox Den Shelter is probably my favorite section of the whole Tecumseh Trail - really remote, lots of up and downs, and probably the most difficult stretch of the Tecumseh.

    How many miles did you do? Also, how did you find the person to do the shuttle?

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому

      I ended up doing about 20 miles. I found the shuttle by doing a Google search on 'Tecumseh Trail Indiana' shuttles , plus my prior knowledge of trying to find shuttle arrangements when doing the Knobstone Trail. Basically, I think there is only one shuttle that is still doing shuttle runs on the Tecumseh - Most High Adventure Outfitters. Tim Napper (Snappy Shuttles) used to offer shuttle rides - primarily on the Knobstone, but he did Tecumseh shuttles too - but he didn't seem to be in the shuttle business any longer. You could probably also arrange some sort of Uber trip but the cell phone service in that area is a bit sporadic so I didn't trust getting anything Uber-related set up.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +1

      Yes, mine too! That needs to get fixed. I've actually been looking at gimbals right from the first test hikes with the Z6. The Moza Aircross looks like it might work, but I'd rather like to avoid spending another $300 if possible! A cheaper, lighter, and less complex solution might be simply a hand grip that screws into the tripod mount hole on the camera. I finally found one that seems promising on my test hikes, and I'll be giving it a shot on my next hike at the end of May. The Z6 is certainly still a work-in-progress but once I get it all dialed in I think it will create some awesome stuff. The low light capability of the thing is incredible (made possible by the full-frame FX video) and I'll need to take more advantage of that in the future.

    You might want to report that forest clearing to a ranger station nearby. As far as I know, people or companies aren't supposed to cut down trees within 500ft of US Scenic Trails regardless of whether it's National Forest area or not. I know people get fined hardcore near the PCT in the Sequoia National Forest section for deforesting in the wrong areas, or jail time if they're stupid enough to do it in the National Park. I also think rangers would actually be pretty upset if they found out someone is cutting down trees that have blazes on them. To me it seems like someone got lazy, and just wanted to use a vehicle of some sort or sled to haul out the wood using the trail rather than where they were most likely designated to cut.

    I don't want to sound like a jerk but the video was hard to watch because of the camera.
    No IBIS makes it very jittery.
    Audio was rough.
    Video looked soft and fuzzy most of the time and the autofocus wasn't all that good.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  5 років тому +5

      No, not being a jerk at all. I need the feedback. It was certainly a learning experience with the new camera. I'll take your points one at a time. The IBIS is an issue for sure - it just isn't that good on the Z6, especially when using non-Z lenses with the FTZ adapter. I do plan to buy either the 24mm or 20mm Z lens but they aren't available yet. In the meantime I did find a hand held grip that will help a great deal with stability. Hand-holding the Z6 without the grip, especially when walking, is really tough (all that mass with the lens makes it hard to keep still). The audio was mostly self-inflicted because I had the gain too high which caused clipping - easily fixed on future trips. The focus issues were caused by a variety of issues, some related to having the camera switch into manual focus mode and some exposure related - I'm working to address all of the issues for future trips. The Z6 is certainly a work-in-progress and a learning experience, but once I get it dialed in I think the quality will be great.

Actually, it is a pretty cool place if you're ever in that area. Lots of shops, restaurants, bands playing, etc. And there was even a zip-line that went from one side of the water to the other, and back (you can see the cables and the zip-line tower on the right side of the picture).
