Neither of these is what classifies a metroidvania. Shovel Knight is a mega man style game where you collect the bosses power ups, in a Mario 3 style overworld. Metroidvanias are single, large maps with interconnected areas, vast amounts of exploration, and lock that exploration behind item requirements and back tracking, like Hollow Knight. Shovel Knight is in no way, shape or form a metroidvania, it's a series of linear levels with a few little secrets that take a few seconds, an overworld map and no back tracking required. It's just a platformer.

Yeah there's a big difference between an incredibly difficult and fun challenge and needless punishing. I chose my words carefully. I would've preferred the game to not waste time by forcing you to go through a boring and aggravating song and dance just to have another go at beating the boss. I thought indie developers had understood by now that we like fun boss fights, like those that are in Hollow Knight, but that for them to actually be enjoyable you should minimize the time between attempts. I know that eventually there's boss rushes in the dlc and stuff, but I'm a fan of letting the player have fun immediately. The only point of games is to have fun, and if I don't have fun while working up to all the cool and very fun abilities and whatnot, I'm just never going to get there. I really wish I could afford to delve deeper into it because I know how it's so great in so many aspects, but bad game design is bad game design.

The only stage in Shovel of Hope that I genuinely HATED. The death pits and spike with a mixture of wind-inducing hazards everywhere made the level somewhat unfair. I'm glad I had the Custom Knight so I could use bomb burst, double jump, infinidagger, and phase locket, that saved MANY lives.
