  • I have to extend an enormous thank you to our guides Logan, Pippin, and Callie, Discover Waitomo and the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. I was so moved by my 2016 visit to the glowworm caves in Waitomo that I knew I needed to take Justin there and see if we could get permission to film. Logan escorted us through Ruakuri cave for hours as we took our time photographing the magical glowworms. Even though the weather prevented us from doing the full blackwater rafting adventure, Pippin and Callie were able to show us parts of Ruakuri's labyrinth of underground rivers safely! Waitomo is one of my favorite places in the world and is an absolute MUST if you find yourself in New Zealand. Claire! Thank you so much for an incredible virtual travel experience. Everything is just so beautiful and awesome.
I have never seen a glow worm in action! Wow! Very cool!
Wheelchair accessible caves?!?!?!?! I am DED! YAS! If ever I am blessed with the opportunity to travel overseas, I must visit these caves. I never knew such beautiful adventurous spaces were available for those of us who need an accessible travel path to experience parts of the world that are generally reserved for more athletic, mobile bodies. This is such exciting information to learn! Thank you!

I went there last November with my husband, brought Sony 35 f1.4GM and 135 f1.8 lenses with 2 cameras. We went through all 3 caves Ruakuri, Aranui and Waitomo cave. But we were unfortunately not allowed to photograph the glowworms though our cameras had no flash at all. Later on I went to the "glowworm tunnel" in Sydney and got some proper photos.

Yes, thats true! We were fortunate to be invited and allowed document the experience in a private setting. They want to protect the cave formations from backpacks/tripods plus the safety/enjoyment of everyone during the cave tubing tours, which I totally get! I think Cameras, tripods, and headlamps are allowed in Ruakuri in their photography tour.
For me, these caves would still be worth it even without my camera (my phone actually did a great job too), I really enjoyed them! The Ruakuri Bush Walk is free and tripods/cameras are allowed there, so that's what I would recommend for photographers wanting to document the glowworms in Waitomo👍
I'll have to look up the glowworm tunnel in Sydney now that I'm obsessed with glowworms haha

@@justinblacktravels Welcome. It's name is simply "Glow Worm Tunnel walking track". It's an open wilderness area with no restriction of access. There's another glow worm tunnel in Helensburgh too near Sydney.
