    These retro videos are great! Obviously I'm biased because this is the Magic I learned to play growing up: I remember buying the French equivalent of Duelist magazine to understand how the stack worked and I'm still conditioned to think about creatures' P/T & CMC as basically "needing to be balanced" (and the way that was done back then looks insane now, 11 year old me was stoked to have Balduvian Horde in his deck lol). Blue/White could field a deck where "exile an attacking creature" was straight up their worst card (why wait until they attacked ?!!@!?@), but a vanilla 1/1 for 1 red that required a forest in play to be a 2/3 was overly good.

    Ahh, the '90's! Those were the days! Every other month I'd pick up The Duelist, or Scry, or Inquest. The local K-Mart had box sets of MTG that included cards, it's where I picked up three Royal Assassins, glass beads that doubled as counters, and a small black, felt bag to hold the beads in. A mile away was the LGS, though I didn't call it that. I called it "the Card Shop." The Card Shop had an endless supply of Fallen Empires and Homeland, and later the Championship decks (the Finkel deck was always sold out). At the time I was playing four player games of MTG with my friends(I ran a 187 deck with the three Royal Assassins, two Nekrataals, and two Avatars of Woe). I didn't get to play the Championship deck I had against my friends, but I did get to use the blanks cards that came with it. They were awesome! they could be tokens, proxies(only if I actually owned the proxied card) or a card I made up that was almost always overpowered. Pretty sure it, like two revised dual lands I had, disappered when I let my son borrow my cards. Ahhh, the '90's!

It was such a power leveler for casual players when these decks dropped each year and you could get hard to come by cards for like $15 at your local game store in the town mall such as EB Games or KB Toys or Waldenbooks. Reading up on all the power combos in the latest issue of Inquest, which you had to subscribe to in order to know the value of all the singles each month. Man the tempest block was so awesome that’s when I really starting getting into magic loved the recurring nightmare deck and that suicide black on the article was one of my favorites at the time. I remember playing unsleeved cards on the food court tables at the mall with coin tokens for the verdant force. We used skittles too. Need to say there were no tokens what ever you had laying around was a token I would like to see quarters as tokens next time, you could tell they were tapped

    Memory Lane with Frank Karsten, or maybe Time Walking With Frank Karsten. I feel this type of VS series just needs a cool name. As a lot of the time When Frank Karsten is in a video or has written an article I normally learn something.
    Hope we get more Frank and more historic standard decks as it is so much fun seeing players that were maybe too young and never got a chance to see how magic was played and their reaction to how these decks played.

    As someone who's played since 96, I have to chime in here: The strange interaction he cites here concerning batches & giant growth actually only existed for a brief period between 4th & 5th edition (which was released in 97), so the 98 pro tour did indeed use the stack as introduced in 5th... Also, EVERYONE used sleeves & playmats, there seems to be this myth that people didn't because in early pro tour footage, when filming the top 8 they would ask players to de-sleeve to prevent camera glare. There may have only been 2 colors of sleeves to choose from, but every deck @ every PTQ & JSS I played @ in the 90's had them...

    I know it's fun looking back on the old decks. I know when I got back into Magic after being out for more than 10 years I'd look at my old decks and ask "how could I play this now?" In so many cases any creature from the day has a strictly better Modern card (and this was just 2019) but that wasn't true with many of the spells. Give that Nightmare deck a modern mana base and the Sligh deck modern creatures and take a new look at things.

    • @CardmarketMagic
      @CardmarketMagic  Рік тому

      Oh, we have numbers to show how strong these spells would be with modern creatures! :D survival + nightmare are still one of the better archetypes in cube, and Sligh is still a staple of almost every standard. I made a whole video about it :)

    what really happened with cursed scroll is 'dump my hand and play 4 of's'. I don't know how many times back in the day I got hit in the face with a cursed scroll with my opponent having multiple cards in hand, they were just all the same... As for champion decks, the only one I ever owned was 5 color black (which we saw in the best decks of all time series).

    Frank hit the aggro player’s nightmare: drawing your creatures when you need burn spells. I think if he drew 3 Incinerates/Shocks at the end instead of 3 Jackal Pups he could’ve won with those and his Fireblast

    Oh man, the good old days. This was near the height of my competitive MTG experience (Qualified for the Pro Tour 3 times in Tempest sealed, Tempest block, and then Extended, but they were all Eurasian stops, so I got to go to 0 of them as a 14 year-old American) , and man, it was just a lot of fun. Power levels were absolutely bonkers, and RecSur almost killed Extended over the next year or two.

    • @CardmarketMagic
      @CardmarketMagic  Рік тому

      @@CardmarketMagic I qualified with Red/Blue with lobotomy as a sideboard option for the wacky combo decks.
      Extended at the time had: Counterspell, Force, Dissipate, Arcane Denial, Dismiss, Mana Leak. And you got to pair that with Bolt and Incinerate, plus Capsize, which won you long games, Whispers of the Muse, Browse, and Impulse for card draw.
      You only ran a small number of creature threats. Before Urzas block hit (which the pro tour decks would include, but qualifying season it before then), it was crap like Frenetic Efreet (2/1 flyer for 1RU that on a coinflip would return to your hand instead of dying) or the old standby, Mahamoti Djinn. A teammate of mine, James Wise, who did get to go, had a version with Sedge? Troll, a 3/3 regenerator.
      I also had helped test the Blue/Green variant, which dropped a lot of the control angle and ran River Boa, Joraels Centaurs, Erhnam Djinn, and enough counters to stop removal spells.
      I was partial to Red/Blue though.
      The later iterations of Green/Blue would almost get me into another Pro Tour as a 4CG (4 color green) aggro deck that ran the dumbest land suite ever (City of Brass, Mishras Factory, Treetop Village, Karpuslan forest, 1 Brushland, a couple Gemstone mines and basic forests) and ran Mana dorks, River Boa, Albino Troll, spike Feeder, protected with the buyback enchantment destruction (allay) and abeyance out of white, bolt and incinerate out of red, and Arcane Laboratory (paired with allay) as an answer to the non-Oath combo decks, and burn.
      Finished second, losing to the same High Tide / RecSur / whale deck that beat me in swiss.
      Tempest block was Survival Awakening. Wall of Blossoms, Tradewind rider, Awakening, Capsize, Spike Weaver/Feeder, 8-12 counterspells. Some versions Ran portcullis (4 cost artifact, if 2 or more creatures are in play, you exiled new creatures until portcullis left play), some ran ertai for an on-board counterspell, but the aggro decks in that era couldnt answer awakening anyway, so portcullis was overkill. You'd bounce creatures until you could stabalize, then start bouncing lands. Once you could capsize + tradewind on your turn, you won. The deck was a lot of fun to play and roughly 0 fun to play against. Its essentially the shell of the Recurring survival deck, only instead of all the fun utility creatures and graveyard interaction, it was just control. Monoblack and white (non-humility) couldnt beat infinite weavers, red couldnt beat infinite feeders, and you'd eventually choke them down to only having 1 spell a turn, which you countered with a buyback counterspell, tradewind their land for the turn, then draw to replace your buyback cost, and could win in 20 tradewind attacks if necessary.
