Hi Ircha for some reason I skipped this game but based on your recommendation of 9 out of 10 I bought it awhile ago. It is all like you said, amazing arts, great graphics, nice battlesystem, excellent English voiceacting and so I can keep going. I know I can never go wrong with your recommendations. I'm late to the party but I will say this. The original version was developed by MediaVision for PS3 and came out on Dec 2014 in Japan. MediaVision was the original developer for the other two PSP games which never got localized either. O-Two inc remastered Refrain because Sega hoped they would revive the franchise and O-Two inc would continue to develop new Shining entries in the future since MediaVision seems to have moved on from cartoony manga/anime looking games going by their current job listing from last year where they looked for a character designer who can properly draw models of people and has various tastes of illustration production experience. MediaVision did developed Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth for PS Vita. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory with PS Vita as base and ported to PS4. They helped working on Gravity Rush 2 for PS4. They developed Valkyria Revolution for PS4/Vita and Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PS4 which came out on March 2018 in Japan and after that they moved on and Sega ported the game to other platforms. It was bound to be a failure as Sega had no faith in it like with Yakuza, Sonic and Sakura Wars which are developed in-house. Despite some of these people who were involved with these games moved to other companies and despite this MediaVision has expanded to 132 people this year(!). The days of several projects in development is over for them. Kojima Productions is around 100 people and making Death Stranding. Let that sink in. MediaVision is known for being a PlayStation developer in the past when they started business in March 1993. They only made PlayStation exclusives with Sony in the PS1 era and was part of Sony Japan's ecosystem and have a long history with Sony on Wild Arms. Crime Crackers never survived after two games.
Your review are nice and well made, most of other nintendo switch reviewer dont like jrpg so its hard to relate to them since its not their cup of coffee. Glad i found your channel especially you like Atelier series too.
I like the T-shirts. I have the red one and it seems fine to me. I recommend for any shirt to turn it inside out to protect the print. Your T-s have held up exceptionally well for me though. Love the channel. Watching your work channel also. Trying to pick up more Norwegian. Not as hard as I thought, but I have a long way to go. Keep up the good work on both!
Ys, Shining resonance, valkyria chronicles, xenoblade 2, tales of vespiria, the atelier games, disgaea, and I forget one game of lesbian vampires (it is a koei tecmo game, it is actually good and not that ecchi), dragon quest 11, fire emblem three houses, and God eater 3
I'm just here to say, this is definitely a fun game. I think it is overhated, though to be honest I think most people call it mediocre rather than bad. I still disagree though, I'd say it's above average, mainly because combat feels so nice and smooth. Every character feels different and they're all fun to play. Character bonding was something I wasn't expecting to enjoy but I did, wasn't cringe imo. The soundtrack is nice, not that memorable but still good enough and fitting. Story was generic anime stuff but eh, I don't care about stories most of the time. I played on PC and had 0 performance issues. The only negatives imo are lack of quality of life stuff like proper teleporting/ quest tracking but my big complaint is how damn grindy lategame gets. Other than that though, definitely a 7/10 good jrpg. Nothing groundbreaking but quite decent for aome 40ish hours of entertainment.
yes shining is overhated (nice term never seen that before) no ppl don't say it's mediocer , they say it's bad , i've watched every review and read most of the steam reviews , the steam reviews really dislike shining also you can beat shining with almost no grinding if you're skilled enough
interesting box because in the west we got a clear see through sleeve with artwork on the front. never knew they released a cardboard sleeve with it unless thats some sort of special edition.

Just bought the game 35$ CND brand new. It's was 50% off and I hesitate a bit... I took a chance as I was in a mood for an RPG and the "Taleslike combat" and the Dragon theme that made me think of the Breath Of Fire serie convinced me. I'm 5 hours into the game and I like everything so far and I'm still digging and discovering the deepness of the combats, options, possibilities and overall gameplay. The game is fun, but damn there's a lot of dialog 😱 but it's a beautiful game.
42h of play later I completed the game and bonded with Kirika. I did not dated with anybody else. Stayed faithful until the end. I'm not used to visual novel and dating simulator. I would not go that route, but that what made my Shining Resonance Refrain experience unique. I enjoyed the story and its little twists. Sometimes it was writing like a dumb japanime with scene that never end and bad guys that never died. It did not felt as epic as the story could have been, but as it condensed I imagine it makes more sense visual-novel wise. But what do I know ? Overall I enjoyed the experience and it felt relaxing in some ways somehow and might wanna try the refrain mode someday or just pursue my post game.
Ifound this game on sale today for $10 after feeling a twinge of nostalgia for the dead shining series and searching it up in e shop. Can't wait for it to finish downloading!
Yeah, normally GameStop throws everything away except the core packaging, but when I sold them this game I begged them pretty please for my sake that they kept the steelbook and sleeve, also since I argued that those two were basically just as much part of the cover as the plastic box itself. So just for me (their words exactly) and because they knew how I get with these things (when you throw packaging out), they agreed to take everything in :3
I 💖💖💖 this game. I agree with every point you made. I generally base my like or dislike for gaming music by whether I hum certain songs to myself throughout the day or not and to say the least, I couldn't shut my brain up 😣😣😣 lol love the music. Great review Irene!

I read the Steam reviews for that game. Most say that it's like watching a summer season 12 episode harem anime. Needless to say, the reviews are pretty negative.

Shining Resonance Refrain has its upsides but it is a real chore to play. Largely, the games combat system is fairly well made despite some major hang-ups. The simple combo system ties into skill use and guards fairly well. The break attacks can chain into skills for bonus damage which can feel very fun and snappy when you pull them off; however, there is no such thing as animation canceling so you have to time your skill usage almost dead on or else it’ll refuse to attack at worst or delay the attack greatly at best. Worse still, enemies seem to get hung up on geometry quite often and combined with the odd hitboxes with skills which make it feel like you’re playing an MMO on bad servers or with bad internet. Fortunately, you don’t realize most of these issues are there because of how quick combat sections are, unfortunately as soon as they’re over you have to get right back into the story. Quickly into the game, I think I described it in the best way possible, it’s a visual novel with combat mini-games in between story segments. The amount of story this game throws at you is completely ridiculous and so much of it is so overloaded with either repeated information or unnecessary information that the urge to skip simply becomes too great. At the point I’ve reached thus far in chapter three at ten hours in, I can point to at least two primary plots and upwards of six subplots that are all being developed at the exact same time by extremely tiny measures. I am losing the ability to count the number of independent factions involved in this conflict on one hand. It doesn’t help that the story simply isn’t interesting because of its lackluster development and the terrible protagonist leading the charge. The absolute weakest member of our cast has got to be the protagonist, Yuma. Yuma is such a whiny and annoying character and towards the start, he has fair reason to be but as time progresses and it just doesn’t stop you quickly lose any sympathy you had for his situation. He whines about literally everything to the point I bet someone could step on an ant and he’d come up with a ten-minute monologue about how bad that makes him feel and yeah, you heard that right, monologue. Yuma monologues about everything and everyone almost constantly and you can tell this is a way for the writer to explicitly tell you how he’s feeling and what his opinions are but this is such a lazy way to craft your story and what’s worse is just how unnecessary it is. For the most part, the story does a good job of explaining everyone’s motivation and their feelings towards certain actions yet they still felt the need to have Yuma monologue it out every 5 minutes just to make sure you’re on the same page. At this point, I haven’t finished the game because the story is driving me nuts. There's so much monologuing and exposition in every single interaction that I can’t afford to skip these twenty minute long scenes, all of which are told using two characters side by side on a flat background speaking at each other. The amount of animation in this game is so limited to the point that one cutscene which was clearly supposed to be an epic battle ended up playing out in a normal battle scene using one of the skill animations they had made for normal combat. This doesn’t happen often though, most of the time everyone is just standing around and then there's a flash of light and that’s supposed to indicate that a fight happened. This whole game looks great and the combat system was pretty well made but everything else was just so lazily made. The story is crammed together so tight it’s suffocating, the characters have to spell out all their emotion for you and every ounce of combat is covered up by a flash so they didn’t have to animate anything. It’s all just so depressing when you realize how much effort was put into everything around those problems.

@@vinceo5296 the game wasn't any amazing, but I enjoyed it a lot and the music was really cool. I spent my money well on it and don't regret it. It's a low budgeted title, but I wouldn't call it "awful" since it functions well.
Warning: If you buy this game on Switch (Only on Switch happen), you need internet first to download a obligatory update to play this game on the game card just like Starlink Battle For Atlas on Switch, i have both version from Shining Resonance Refrain on Switch and Ps4 (The Ps4 with the steel box)
yes i was disappointed and i got angry by that even is a game card game i feel like i never own that game by paying 60$, but the Ps4 version no need to download anything and i feel like i own this version by paying 24$.
AH! im sorry i was wrong! the game still 100% physical, the only problem is when you start to play the game they ask to update the game for the first time only and can be skipped but if you already did the update and for any reason you want to delete that update well that option to skip the update will no longer appear the game will no longer boot until you restart the entire switch system from scratch, no worries but if i don't want to restart my system i just download the update again and will boot.
Awesome review! Speaking of games that aren’t talked about enough...check out Labyrinth of refrain: Coven of Dusk. Very underrated game IMO. It’s fantastic.
Ircha Gaming Being completely honest, I have yet to buy the full game. But I have put over 10 hours into the demo, and I absolutely love it. You should try it. Basically...It’s a first person dungeon crawler type of game. Honestly when I first saw it, I thought it wasn’t my cup of tea. I pretty much ignored it...Then I played the demo, and it blew my mind. The character creation, combat system, and grinding is what I love the most. The level design is good too. It’s fun to just explore and find stuff/level up. The story is...interesting. I won’t spoil the demo, but I really like the two main characters. I wanna buy the full game just to see what happens next. So...Yeah. If your at all interested, I’d at least try the demo. I think it’s worth giving a peek.
How is it that I sell all the games you like/recommend?? xD I recently sold both Shining Resonance and Skyrim to yank Kingdom Hearts 3 down in price. Looking back, not worth it, KH3 was disappointing, but hey, what can you do :P
You talking smack on Rinna? She was my favorite haha. Otherwise I wasn't too hot on this game myself. But I also filled my team with magic users and it made the game run really really slow. Seems about half of the people who play on console run into this and the other half don't.

Lol I have this game on my PS4 and I must say, it is somewhat similar to some tales games like xillia 1 and xillia 2. The only difference are the boring dialogues which reminds me of those boring atelier games. I tried surviving with atelier meruru but that game sucks so I am being patient with this one. lol
I first found out about this from the Nintendo eshop. Yeah, this RPG is Fanservice and an RPG Version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I like Sonia as well, but she dies easily during Boss Battles if the AI is controlling her. 🙁 I'm a Fan of Dorothy Fahn who does Sonia's voice since Digimon, Rurouni Kenshin as Kaoru Kamiya and Maria from Star Ocean 3, but I hate Brina Palencia who does Excella's voice for not only being Kurumu's Dub voice, but for what she did to Cherami Leigh and Vic Mignogna! And Excella was originally voiced by Nana Mizuki who've I've first known for Hinata Hyuga from Naruto and then Lan Fan from FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood!
I guess 'generic JRPG' would be the best way to describe this game. Doesn't offer anything new or interesting. Not sure how people who have never watched anime feel like about the 'Oblivious Harem Protagonist' trope', but i'm personally sick of it. After playing Tales of Berseria, this just felt 'meh' an probably never coming back to this. Music IS pretty good tough.
Can a person whose never played this series just jump in or will I be lost? Some JRPG’s background stories can be convoluted at times. Is this a game where it is better to grind away to level up to fight bosses? What makes that one character chringy? Thanks 4 the review.

This was a good one. Didn't know it was a ps3 port tho, makes sense. Just thought it was way to text heavy. Agree on everything about the combat.

Quickly into the game, I think I described it in the best way possible, it’s a visual novel with combat mini-games in between story segments. The amount of story this game throws at you is completely ridiculous and so much of it is so overloaded with either repeated information or unnecessary information that the urge to skip simply becomes too great. At the point I’ve reached thus far in chapter three at ten hours in, I can point to at least two primary plots and upwards of six subplots that are all being developed at the exact same time by extremely tiny measures. I am losing the ability to count the number of independent factions involved in this conflict on one hand. It doesn’t help that the story simply isn’t interesting because of its lackluster development and the terrible protagonist leading the charge.
The absolute weakest member of our cast has got to be the protagonist, Yuma. Yuma is such a whiny and annoying character and towards the start, he has fair reason to be but as time progresses and it just doesn’t stop you quickly lose any sympathy you had for his situation. He whines about literally everything to the point I bet someone could step on an ant and he’d come up with a ten-minute monologue about how bad that makes him feel and yeah, you heard that right, monologue. Yuma monologues about everything and everyone almost constantly and you can tell this is a way for the writer to explicitly tell you how he’s feeling and what his opinions are but this is such a lazy way to craft your story and what’s worse is just how unnecessary it is. For the most part, the story does a good job of explaining everyone’s motivation and their feelings towards certain actions yet they still felt the need to have Yuma monologue it out every 5 minutes just to make sure you’re on the same page.
At this point, I haven’t finished the game because the story is driving me nuts. There's so much monologuing and exposition in every single interaction that I can’t afford to skip these twenty minute long scenes, all of which are told using two characters side by side on a flat background speaking at each other. The amount of animation in this game is so limited to the point that one cutscene which was clearly supposed to be an epic battle ended up playing out in a normal battle scene using one of the skill animations they had made for normal combat. This doesn’t happen often though, most of the time everyone is just standing around and then there's a flash of light and that’s supposed to indicate that a fight happened.
This whole game looks great and the combat system was pretty well made but everything else was just so lazily made. The story is crammed together so tight it’s suffocating, the characters have to spell out all their emotion for you and every ounce of combat is covered up by a flash so they didn’t have to animate anything. It’s all just so depressing when you realize how much effort was put into everything around those problems.

@@vinceo5296 the game wasn't any amazing, but I enjoyed it a lot and the music was really cool. I spent my money well on it and don't regret it. It's a low budgeted title, but I wouldn't call it "awful" since it functions well.

Warning: If you buy this game on Switch (Only on Switch happen), you need internet first to download a obligatory update to play this game on the game card just like Starlink Battle For Atlas on Switch, i have both version from Shining Resonance Refrain on Switch and Ps4 (The Ps4 with the steel box)
yes i was disappointed and i got angry by that even is a game card game i feel like i never own that game by paying 60$, but the Ps4 version no need to download anything and i feel like i own this version by paying 24$.
AH! im sorry i was wrong! the game still 100% physical, the only problem is when you start to play the game they ask to update the game for the first time only and can be skipped but if you already did the update and for any reason you want to delete that update well that option to skip the update will no longer appear the game will no longer boot until you restart the entire switch system from scratch, no worries but if i don't want to restart my system i just download the update again and will boot.
Awesome review! Speaking of games that aren’t talked about enough...check out Labyrinth of refrain: Coven of Dusk. Very underrated game IMO. It’s fantastic.
Ircha Gaming Being completely honest, I have yet to buy the full game. But I have put over 10 hours into the demo, and I absolutely love it. You should try it.
Basically...It’s a first person dungeon crawler type of game. Honestly when I first saw it, I thought it wasn’t my cup of tea. I pretty much ignored it...Then I played the demo, and it blew my mind.
The character creation, combat system, and grinding is what I love the most. The level design is good too. It’s fun to just explore and find stuff/level up.
The story is...interesting. I won’t spoil the demo, but I really like the two main characters. I wanna buy the full game just to see what happens next.
So...Yeah. If your at all interested, I’d at least try the demo. I think it’s worth giving a peek.

Otherwise I wasn't too hot on this game myself. But I also filled my team with magic users and it made the game run really really slow. Seems about half of the people who play on console run into this and the other half don't.
@@ircha She is a major anime cliche girl. But that's kind of all the characters. I just like her design haha. They sell figures of her, and I'd buy one if I wasn't poor as hell.

Lol I have this game on my PS4 and I must say, it is somewhat similar to some tales games like xillia 1 and xillia 2. The only difference are the boring dialogues which reminds me of those boring atelier games. I tried surviving with atelier meruru but that game sucks so I am being patient with this one. lol

I'm a Fan of Dorothy Fahn who does Sonia's voice since Digimon, Rurouni Kenshin as Kaoru Kamiya and Maria from Star Ocean 3, but I hate Brina Palencia who does Excella's voice for not only being Kurumu's Dub voice, but for what she did to Cherami Leigh and Vic Mignogna! And Excella was originally voiced by Nana Mizuki who've I've first known for Hinata Hyuga from Naruto and then Lan Fan from FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood!

I guess 'generic JRPG' would be the best way to describe this game. Doesn't offer anything new or interesting. Not sure how people who have never watched anime feel like about the 'Oblivious Harem Protagonist' trope', but i'm personally sick of it. After playing Tales of Berseria, this just felt 'meh' an probably never coming back to this.
