Content Warning In this episode, Alyson Stoner and I discuss the realities of child labor and the exposure child actors experience. We do discuss different traumas we experienced. It may be triggering, and we encourage you all to take care of yourself.
Today on Vulnerable, Alyson Stoner and I continue to our conversation advocating for high-performing children. Alyson is a multi-disciplinary artist - actress, singer, dancer, and podcast host, to name a few. You may remember her from Camp Rock, Cheaper By The Dozen, Step Up Franchise, and more.
Alyson and I discuss the deeper work we are doing in our own healing journeys. We talk about how we work to feel safe, being in romantic relationships, and more. We share an update on our efforts to organize a way to advocate for and protect child actors. We both discuss if we would allow their kids to be in the business.

I love how the child actors of my generation are speaking up about these issues. Children shouldn't be put in adult situations and left to fend for themselves in an adult business. I hope this will lead to better laws to protect child actors because as we've seen in, even some adults cant handle the pressure so how are we expecting children to? People like these two, Janette, and Alexa are doing the hard ground work but its so needed

idk why I am so fascinated by all of this, maybe because when I was younger I secretly wished I was a child actor but I LOVE these conversations. I feel like there really is no world where kids aren't apart of the industry so I am amazed it has taken so many years to get safer conditions worked out. Talking about kids in new media and parents exploiting them on social media is an entirely different ball game and it feels like we just finally getting somewhere with kids in the professional industry. I can't imagine a show or movie without kids being involved at all - especially shows for kids like on disney. I've seen a handful of child actors that came shortly after alyson's disney days talk about being apart of it and it seems like disney for sure got better, I obviously wasn't apart of it to know for sure but It sounds so different from the talk about the earlier disney channel days. Karan Brar (kid from the show jessie) has talked about it a few times and his view is very interesting. He would be a great one to get on your podcast!! Talking about the old vs new disney channel days and compare what had changed and what didn't etc.

It is very good to know that the women who voiced Kimberly Ann Possible and Isabella Garcia-Shapiro are still out there protecting kid actors and other sorts of people in real life. 🧡💚 I am sure they will find a good way to protect kids without turning them nameless like the kids who act in Bluey, or doing something even worse like outlawing child actors entirely, so they can never share their acting and singing talents with the world on television or film screens. I keep coming back to your content because when you get a great guest with wonderful ideas, it's magic. I love the idea Alyson had to give people something they could "check on" over time, and something they could get involved in. This is the same concept Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher used for their Ukraine relief effort. Kunis said that she knew people wanted to feel good about themselves and see their contributions give tangible results, so they made a way for people to track the project's activities, and it was very successful.
It was interesting how you and Alyson talked about alienation from your siblings. I think it would help to research existing data about siblings who are raised apart from each other, because it's probably more common than you think. I was raised mostly apart from my siblings for different reasons, and it's hard. Almost unspeakably hard. My siblings and I are starting to mend things now (we're all relatively close to your age), but we all feel loss, awkwardness, resentment, and confusion over it. The cause of our trauma was different than yours, but the results are very similar. A lot of the issues child stars face are the same as other kids. The difference is, they're doing it under a microscope.
I'm looking forward to what's next for you, and I hope you keep your focus on activism and progress. Even if you sometimes just do fun nostalgia stuff, I hope it's geared toward awareness.

Alyson Stoner's reflection on how ethical it is to have a child pursue this career, even if the right circumstances and safety conditions were gathered, is very interesting.
I think it's necessary to go into the origin and creation of systematically "making child celebrities," which I date around the 1920s.
Children are often playfully encouraged to perform in a private or semi-private circle (family gatherings, school performances) because many parents enjoy showcasing their children's achievements. It can be a simple drawing, the capacity to move to the rhythm, sing a song, etc..... The problems start when the child is pushed into a public zone against a reward. This is when the principal motivation is either money or social advancement. Think Mozart's father pushing a 6-year-old child to perform in European courts, the castrati chosen before puberty, and children in Vaudeville joining their parent's acts (Charlie Chaplin).
The child's aptitude/talent is seen as a way out from an economic or social condition. I believe that showcasing children for revenue amplified when it coincided with the birth of cinema, the first movie stars, and the amplification of dire economic situations in the 1920s and 30s. People grew more desperate and willing to accept any condition disregarding the children's safety.
And that's when children primarily become an income against labor.
The fact that the provided labor is artistic doesn't diminish the effort it demands.
So, to me, all of this says that having a child pursue a career with the same intensity and gain as an adult is child labor is therefore in no circumstances ethical.

I have absolutely been following what you both have been doing and will continue to as I feel it is so tremendously important. I really started watching both of you right before Aaron Carter passed which I unfortunately felt so validated this work. As a social worker / psychotherapist, that has noticed my population become overwhelmingly young post covid, I thank you for being honest and relatable to so many people. I felt a tremendous amount of empathy hearing Alyson grapple with the concept of is child performing ethical. I also truly agree the answer is no. It's not possible. Many children are asked to deal with concepts and portray situations they genuinely don't have the ability to process safely. The idea there AREN'T social workers/therapists on sets, especially with such brutal hours, characters, and physical demands is a recipe for tragedy as you both have expressed before even adding in all the different personalities. I feel really inspired by the thoughtful, insightful, and most importantly VULNERABLE places you both are going. It is absolutely incredible you continue to have these conversations that are so meaningful and productive. Alyson - I have watched a few different podcast interviews you've done and was blown away by these conversations with Christy as well as with Mayim Bialik. I have been recommending Movement Genius to peers and clients alike because I feel tremendous need for what you and your sister are doing! For the past few weeks, I've been trying to decide whether to comment because I am a minor player in a huge game but I absolutely want to help you brilliant, strong, powerful women, in whatever way I can to really bring these meaningful skills specializing in youth, trauma, eating disorders, and OCD (Which I know is also prevalent in the industry)

Well this podcast are so amazing! I’m not a high performance kid but I have parents that were just so strict and at the same time I was so lonely, that I grew up basically an adult when I was just a kid. I’m 30 now but for the majority of things I act like 50. So I feel identified for many things that you show in this podcast, and I am doing my healing and searching forms to help kids that grow in similar conditions that I was because like Alyson said that’s the way to really change the society. So I love it, and I expect you continue helping me doing the same for my particular situation and the kids that grow as me. Sorry for my bad English I’m actually from Colombia so is not my native language. Finally a question for you both is something that I think Alyson try to say and I was recently talking about it in my therapy session is that I think trauma it’s something that everybody suffer in different ways, we all have traumas I think that actually trauma is not totally bad cause thank to trauma I have many attitudes and “talents” that no body else have so I think that we should learn from trauma, and with the right elements we can manage it, take off the bad of the trauma and use the good of trauma for being more powerful… of this topic what do you think? Trauma it’s necessary in some ways? So we should not wish not to have trauma but rather have tools to handle it properly and empower ourselves from it?

I fully support young children not being in the industry. I’ve never watched a movie or TV show and said to myself, “ man, that kid is a great actor.” Children always seem over expressive and it takes away from the story. Also, depending on the story line or what the child is asked to do can make me uncomfortable and I start wondering about the mental health of the child or why the parents signed on to this, that also takes away from the storyline. I currently choose to watch movies or tv shows that don’t have any children, if at all.
I stand with you both on your future endeavor. It’s going to be tough, systems already set in place don’t like to change but with enough push back from the public and legal constraints, anything is possible!
