If anyone was drunk in this film it was Mercedes McCambridge as she suffered from alcoholism and later was in AA to help herself with the addiction. If Joan Crawford got drunk it was because of having to work with Mercedes McCambridge! The color by Republic (TRUCOLOR) was intense, but wonderfully so. Even the backdrops were beautifully painted. Joan Crawford may have been difficult to work with but that was the case with any Actress that reached the heights that was the case with Joan Crawford and her most successful career. She knew the roles to tackle and "Johnny Guitar" was one of them. The theme song sung by Peggy Lee also makes this a film to remember. It is true that if you don't like this film, you are not on this planet.
Had Joan Crawford not been the star in this film, it probably would not be as well remembered as is the case today. With all the magic of the film, it was Joan Crawford who makes this film. You watch her in every scene she may be in, as Joan Crawford dominated the screen and any viewer would find it hard to watch without her presence.
I did not know that Joan Crawford demanded extra scenes and to be in on the final shootout. If so, then she has some title to be the author of the film.
Mercedes McCambridge was perfect for this role, but she had to be one of the most difficult Actresses to work with in Hollywood. She later was the voice of the "Devil" in "The Exorcist" which was a perfect role for her. Orson Welles did not say Mercedes McCambridge was the greatest radio actress, that honor went to Agnes Moorehead as said by Orson Welles. Agnes Moorehead was known as "The First Lady of Suspense" because of her many successful radio role over a long period of time.
