So...let's talk a little bit more about your fridge today! Have you ever wondered why there were two and what those settings were on your crisper drawers? Some will say High Humidity/Low Humidity, some say Vegetable and Fruit which is confusing for all kinds of reasons since a lot of the plants we refer to as vegetables are actually biologically fruits, tubers, seeds and well...that's another botany lesson that we won't get into.
On these crisper drawers in your fridge, you'll find a little slider that closes and opens a vent on the drawer allowing either air to flow out or humidity to stay in. The bottom line, is that these drawers are designed to be two different settings because certain fruits and vegetables need different environments to stay fresher longer. This video will educate you on how to organize these drawers and some of my favorite products for storing veggies that won't fit inside the crisper drawers! I hope you enjoy this video!

I seriously don’t understand why people would “thumbs down” videos like these. Makes no freaking sense.
Every party needs a pooper 🤣
Sigh! The bottom-line: 1) Ethylene producing fruits can spoil other fruits & vegetables...so it goes into the crisper with the vents open which means low humidity and it allows the gases to escape. 2) For keeping vegetables crispier they need moisture and therefore the crisper vent should be closed to keep the moisture in.
Thanks 👍
So basically put vegetables in the drawer at the bottom that has no vents and put fruit into the humidity drawer with only other fruit and leave the vents open.. yea?
Lol oh my gosh, this is great and your energy is welcoming. Thank you for the valuable information 👏🏆
I don't know what I expected when I started this video, but it wasn't this! You covered a lot of territory- fun and enlightening!
The printable guide is very helpful. Great video.
Yay! I'm so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for clearing this up for me! I never understood why the drawers were labled like that and what they did. I appreciated your clear explanations and the extra chart.
Love the printable!! Just what I needed!!! Thank you!!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thank you this helped. I appreciate the chart. I have 2 drawers that are humidity control. One long drawer settings for deli, fresh, chilled.
Storage also depends on where you live..... In Florida you Try and put as much as you can in the icebox to avoid bugs 😅
Great info., just got a new fridge so this helps!
Useful info, thanks for posting
Love the list!!❤️ thank you. So helpful
thanks for your energy and printables....
Glad you found them helpful!
you are the best! very helpful! thank you for sharing!
I’m so glad you found the video helpful!
Excellent presentation, learned a lot today. Thank you.
Thank you, that’s so kind
Kay, We learned so much from you, that my Wife Chandra and 6yr old daughter Mia want to have you over for lunch, lol. Mia is organizing the fridge right now!!
Thank you for this very informative and extremely helpful video. I really appreciate it! I just bought a new Whirlpool refrigerator and the drawers indicate "fruits and vegetables." God bless you!
A lot of good info but at a fast clip; had to play it twice. Looking for the print icon. Very informative. Maybe my lettuce and romaine will stay fresher.
Excellent video! Great information!
Great job and personality to boot.
Thank you!
Great video!
Impressive video, thank u.
Thank you so much for watching!
Doles has these totally delicious bags of salad mix that I love. If I could keep 2 bags each in my two refrigerator crisper drawers I would be so happy. 🥗
Thank you!
Great video thanks
This is an awesome video great explanation!
Thank you!!! This was so helpful!! I love the printable too. The drawers in my Samsung fridge say low and high humidity. :)
I've come back to this video several times b/c of the info shared on the crisper bin in the fridge & how to protect everything. Do you have any hints or tips on peppers? I LOVE to add green, yellow, & red peppers in most of my dishes, esp on top of salads, use in the meatloafs for hubby (again, slipping farther b/c I'm tired of fighting to remain vegetarian; although, I'm still not giving up on the work to serve less meats & more fruits & veggies to my husband! But I digress... Can you help me save my 'sweet peppers' from going bad so quick? The only things in the crisper bin other than my peppers are scraped-clean carrots, red pepper & green pepper, along with a red onion that's inside a ziplock bag. I had 2 lemons in the drawer but I moved them out. Wasn't sure if they were contributors or not. Any pearls of wisdom? Oh, and the Crisper Pyramid unit by OXO is in there too! I'm thinking of getting either a few of the Blu Apples or 2 of the OXO crispers that suction to the wall so there'd be one on each side.
My crisper bin has the humidity adjuster. The meat bin underneath, which doesn't get used as much as it should be. There is a slider button on the inside of the fridge by the meat drawer that allows the slider to go from center then degrees of colder & the other way has graduated degrees for cold but not as cold. Any thoughts on this part? If I turn up that part of the fridge, often I find some of my veggies at the base of the bin, usually ones that can spread out, will get really cold to the point of freezing the items almost bone cold. Thanks so much.
Thank you for this video very informative and clear.
Hey, thanks!
Great video! I love the clear explanations and am so happy to have the list you prepared! GE Top Freezer has 1 drawer marked 'Vegetables' and 1 marked 'Fruit', with a slider that exposes several holes. I usually have 3 items to go in the crispers: apples, avocados that are ripe and orange peppers. Today I found the pepper frozen. I know apples and avocados should be kept separately. Apples in the fruit drawer with the holes open? Pepper in the vegetable drawer with the holes closed? and avocados in the vegetable drawer too? Need guidance on that. Please advise! Thank you!
The holes are to control humidity. Leafy greens and things that wilt NEED a humid environment to stay fresh, so you'll want to keep the holes closed on that drawer. The other drawer can be holes open for airflow. Peppers don't seem to be affected by ethylene so they can get along with anyone :) Avocados on the counter unless they are perfectly ripe and you can't eat them. You can pop them in the fridge (I put them WAY away from EVERYTHING since they are PUMPING OUT ethylene) to get an extra few days of peak ripeness.
I love this! I always go behind my husband and separate the apples, oranges, and bananas. He thinks I'm crazy! My fridge has two drawers with fruit/vegetable settings. ❤️
You aren't crazy! You're WICKED SMAHT! 😋
great video thank you for the info
I’m glad you found it helpful!
thank you best video on subject yet.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
I agree with you. I don't think you need to put potatoes and tomatoes in the refrigerator.
My fridge bottom drawers don’t have the vents, what do you recommend? I’m watching from old to new videos of yours and just saw about the blue apple, today found them at bed, bath and beyond (cheaper than amazon). Being a one person eater, things go bad pretty quickly, so I really hope they (blue apples) help 👍🏼. …. on to the next vid
Thank you for the pdf!
You’re very welcome!
I like that lettuce container.
I have an older Electrolux / Frigidaire refrigerator. It seems only 1 of the drawers on the bottom left has a Humidity slider. So what is the other one and the rest of the fridge compared to the adjustable one? Is the high humidity on the drawer the same as the rest of the fridge? or is the low humidity the same? What about the one with no controls? Is it permanently high or low humidity? I know this post is old but hopefully someone will see this and can answer these questions for me. Thanks.
Can you send me that link about fruit and vegetables what can or cannot be together. Your link did not work for me. Thank you. 😊
in your thumbnail you have a short but very wide drawer below your two crisper drawers, what are you supposed to put in there? thanks
My refrigerator just says fruits and vegetables. But it's really unclear how the vents work that's why I'm here at this video.
Hello there. Thank you for the video. I have a lot of moisture in my crisper drawer for veggies. My grandma used to use a piece of charcoal for moisture absorption. Do you suggest that? I tried other things like towels for moisture absorption, leaving extra room, and adjusting humidity control crisper set on low (leaving room for moisture to scape), but it has not worked. i even left baking soda box in the drawer, still lots of moisture is accumulating.
That's so weird! I don't think that's normal to have so much moisture or condensation in the drawers. Something may not be working properly in your fridge. I would double check that nothing is blocked in your fridge first.
Try not opening the fridge door too often, to avoid letting air from coming in
@@TheOrganizedSoprano Thank you
@@Drskopf Good suggestion. Thank you
@@Sarah-yo1dd I've been dealing with the same issue for months but I found out that is one of the reasons.
great video! my frig is an apartment fridge for a college district sighhhhhh just drawers, small, no vent, and yet I love my apartment sooooo. Now that I know where and what to store and why and what to put on my wish list, here is how I compensate. no room for apples in fridge set ceiling vent in kitchen to full open so cold air will actually hit space on countertop/breakfast bar and viola!!! move avocados 3 ft to left of apples which is still cooler but not cold viola!!!! cut lettuce stem off to only showing white root sit in bowl w water covering white root while putting away other veggies (do this with cauliflower, etc, that needs moisture) put away last viola!!!!! I also grow green onions in the fridge, just like my friend in her restaurant does, use green part to within a half inch of white bulb, dip in water, wrap bulb in plastic wrap and drop in bottom of veggie drawer. give it time viola!!! This is a poor woman's hints to the universe. hope it helps those wo roomy fridges or have nothing more than an electric fridge (yes they still have gas and that is NOT in my universe) and the Hub to tell us where, when and why. luv ya yes, I know the lettuce roots are actually in ground and cut away before selling buttttttt I should care about that why? ((say it really fast "I should care about it why?") lol it works.
If you can make your petite fridge work than you are truly workin' it, girl!!! Love it!!! Thanks for watching! :)
thank you, ur vids r helping soooo much
Patricia Wolfe Not sure if you can change out your fridge or not, but there was a larger 'dorm-size' fridge when we had to buy our youngest daughter for her freshman year as an undergrad. I traveled & lived off-the-grid for a number of years in some tiny places. If I had seen her fridge back when I was in a few of those tiny spaces my jaw would've dropped with envy & awe. Hang in there. Square-footage does improve as you get older; then you're working on how to reduce size yet not sell the family home where your children grew up & grandchildren came to visit b/c you want to pass it on. Our kids are grown now, altho our youngest is 21 & finishing her 3rd year as an undergrad so she still lives at home when she's not on campus, which isn't much. She may come home 2-3 times over the course of a semester. Her head stays in her books, in her digital files from classes, & she has often fallen asleep on the floor in the stacks the way I did back in the day. LOL! But, she's been on the Dean's list more than off it so we can't complain. We are still trying to adjust to being a couple vs being Mom & Dad with kids in the middle. We are also trying to downside our home. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to having our daughter home for summer break; hwr, I'm not looking forward to her bring her dorm room & all that's in it on of what she's got stowed away at Val's apt since she stays there more than her dorm room. We'll get here though; somehow, some way, we'll do it. You will do. ;)
Hi I usually just put my fruits vegetables in the fridge in the grocery clear bag. Should I do that?or should I put in in the drawer without a bag. Also do you recommend washing all produce at once or should I wait until I’m ready to eat it
If the bag is clear, it's probably okay, but being able to see everything is helpful so that I don't waste food. Since my grocery bags were all a translucent green, I can't tell what the heck is in it and I let so many go bad. I would wait to wash any produce until you're ready to eat it unless you are a prepper. This is especially true for berries.
thanks for pdf!
You’re welcome!
Hey there, thank a lot this can help . But, heard and watch on it,that you can put your greens leaf y in the refrigerator in a baggie with paper towel wrapped around it a little moisture? Because if you think about it if you have a plant that needs water what would you do? Give it water so it moist paper towel will help in a high humidity drawer
I don't know!! But ,I'm trying to figure some things out.
Thank you for sharing..
God bless you
Yes! Any way you can provide a little humidity for your leafy green veggies, they will last longer! :) My mom wraps them in damp paper towels and puts them in plastic bags which might be a bit extreme but it works for her :)
what about bell peppers, oranges, and grapefruit?
I usually get pepper towel around the 🍃 left and herbs inside of a zip lock bag !
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for sharing. Question, bell peppers, high or low humidity? Ty
Thank you! Peppers are one of the few things that aren't actually affected too much by it and they are not pumping it out either! You can put them anywhere and I think they'd be okay. Same with citrus fruits!
The Organized Soprano Thank you!
thanks so much for you downloadable pdfs. I guess the oranges go with the apples ? thanks !!
They can! Citrus fruits don’t care who they are with it seems lol
I have a question, but thanks for doing this. I could never remember whether my lettuce drawer was supposed to be high humidity or low. The chart is helpful too.
I know this is a couple of years old now so you may not see this but... The way my fridge is set up, the apple drawer is at the bottom right now and the veggie drawer above it. The apple drawer doesn't have a humidity control but the lettuce drawer does, so I've set it to high humidity. You mentioned the apples off-gasing. Would I be better off putting the apples above the veggie drawer instead of below it so that the gases would not rise up and potentially leak into the veggie drawer? It never occurred to me that the position of the drawers in the fridge (one above the other) might affect the veggies too.
I’m not sure, honestly. Your best bet is to probably try to mitigate by absorbing the ethylene gas. I know OXO makes a gas absorbing product along with my favorite Blu Apple
Thanks! Yeah, I'm going to get one of those Blu Apples and see if that helps. Thanks again and thanks for responding so quickly 😊
Where do I find the list
Thank you! I had mine set all wrong - high humidity, low humidity was all Greek to me.
first one to comment. It's a great video
Great video, but I could not pull up the printable :/
Fixed it! Thanks for the heads up!
I don’t see Amazon or Target links on the description
I funneled them through my website to reduce individual links, but you can go through my Amazon Storefront now: www.amazon.com/shop/hubneat This is a super old video, so thanks for the reminder to update my description 🤣
Thank you. I actually did my own search & ended up getting it for $10 at Walmart. The lettuce one. But thanks so much, your video was really helpful. I hope my greens & avocados won’t rot as much now 😂
👍
how do I remove the telescopic freezer drawers?? an item is stuck behind and I can't reach it :(
No idea! Definitely refer to your instruction manual for your fridge! It’s probably online! Good luck
What about radish, lemons, limes, and dill?
Some of these don’t seem to be affected. Citrus and peppers really don’t care where they are so I usually put them with the apples and stuff. Dill and other herbs I always count as a leafy green so a nice humid environment will make them last longer!
My fridge has a poor design, I don’t think there is a perfect fridge out there, I’ve given up. Question, little tab on both drawers “vegetable and fruit” humidity control. Do i want the vent/tab open to the fridge to let air in and out for low humidity or closed for low humidity? Thank you in advance, you are darling.
I think you answered this in other questions below, thank you
High/Low Humidity - where is .pdf for veggie list
Check the description 😉
My refrigerator is freezing everything...even eggs ..what should I do.It is set on lowest cool setting
Sometimes air may not flow properly due to it being overpacked! I’d do some experiments with a fridge thermometer and then call a professional to make sure it’s working okay!
How do you find the download?
I created it and it’s linked in the description.
For dragonfruits, does it require low or high humidity?
Hm...don’t know! They are like cool cactus fruits so I’m suspecting they might be good with the apples and other fruits. I did some brief research and it looks like it produces ethylene but is not heavily affected
Fruit/Vegetable
i had a cucumber in high humidity drawer and it got moldy
Where ca. I find the pdf?
Hi there, William! The PDF can be downloaded here: www.theorganizedsoprano.com/shop I hope it's helpful for you! Let me know if you have any questions :)
Sealed crisper/crisper in my refrigerator.
High and low
My crisper drawer just says “crisper,” nothing else. Hence my confusion. The drawer above it says: fresh LOK hydrator. THAT that has a slider that indicates one can put it at LOW- for fruits. Or you can slide it over to HIGH-for vegetables. (Or slide it somewhere in between.)
But the crisper, has no sliding device. Therefore, I don’t use it any more after I put lettuce in it once and it did not do well. Spoiled quickly. I don’t understand it🤷♀️🤔
Some of these fridge designs got me like… 🤦🏽♀️
High humidity, low humidity
What about plantains?
Same rules as bananas
Veggie fruit
I don't know what a fridge is... Aaaaaaaa a durrrrrr
I hope you know that I actually spit out my coffee reading this comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣💀
So when in this video did you explain how to use the crisper drawers????
I dunno man. I might have forgot 😅

Waxkasta you should be reaching out to the manufacturer directly if you have questions about your refrigerator
high humidity low humidity - new Samsung fridge
I came here to know what setting to use and it was not helpfull
The information is in the video but I will summarize here: The LOW humidity setting (vent open) is for things that produce LOTS of ethylene, like Apples. The HIGH humidity setting (vent closed) is for items that are SENSITIVE to this hormone, such as leafy green vegetables, etc. There is a FREE guide you can download on my website here. www.theorganizedsoprano.com/shop
The Organized Soprano im sorry for not looking at the description box i saw it wayyyy later thank you for your video
Angelisa Berwa You’re welcome! Happy to help!
I'm exhausted today. After many years, I have time to make yeast bread & time to actually prep, mix, proof, knead, shape, let dough rest, then shape to fix what I missed the 1st time then put in a container or bake on the baking stone directly... And, NOT BURN ANYTHING OTHER THAN FINGERS, WRIST, & ARMS! Hurray! Only downside is that I'm cabinet rich but counterspace poor. I have the real estate; hwr, the microwave, espresso bar, Keurig machine, bread & all-purpose flours, & stand mixer take up so much precious space & I can't seem to send any into a cabinet for a permanent nap. Ugh. Even my kitchen island is off limits b/c we haven't got the marble top for it yet. It's an old wood cabinet that takes 4 grown men to move, & I've turned it into a kitchen island against hubby delight, tho it's grown on him & he's been on board for a few months now. One of his older brothers made the cabinet when he was part owner in an NC furniture company. The cabinet is made of heavy, heavy NC wood. I've foregone casters or legs & instead have opted to add sliders b/c I don't want it eating into the new vinyl for the kitchen, which we are working toward but it has to wait for the laundry room & hot water heater. The central air & gas pack unit needs replacing too. It's going to be a long, hot summer this year... Ugh. Makes me thankful that (knock on wood) the menopause sweating thru everything seems to have passed somehow even tho I can't take hormones b/c I've had 2 cysts removed from my breast (it was not cancerous but couldn't tell until they were gone. Now it's like I"m this ticking time bomb every year). Hoping it will hold out thru the summer. Don't need more adding to the sweating. lol.
My fruit is going to have body hair now? No thank you!
I don’t know what this comment means but it made me LOL
3 years later the printable guide is gone. 😭
No it hasn’t. I just downloaded it. Try copying and pasting link in the browser 😊

Thanks for watching Larry! ;-)
I asked about cleaning drawers and putting them in. I got a lecture on ethylene
Title of the video is How To Use Your Crisper Drawers Correctly. There’s nothing in the title or tags about cleaning so it seems like you took a wrong turn somewhere in your search! I encourage you to check out the channel called Clean My Space hosted by Melissa Maker. There you can get all the cleaning info you need! She’s awesome! Hope you learned some info since you watched my video anyway 🙃😉
Reading is a beautiful thing but sometimes it's overlooked.

Excellent video. I love a woman with brains and one who delves into the chemistry of what is going on. Thank you for the information on ethylene. Very interesting.
While I appreciate the botany class. Get to the fucking point.
While I appreciate the feedback, this video and the digital download that I have included for free has helped many people. It sounds like this video was not for you. I invite you to check out the many other creators here on the platform who will get to the f*cking point faster than me. Thanks for watching and have an awesome day!!!
Haaaaa.... I watched the whole video thinking I would learn about the adjustment on a crisper drawer?
You fell for the clickbait, I guess, huh?
Blah blah blah is all i heard. This video was brutal. Long and very uninformative on the use of a fridge crisper. Save yourself the headache and search for another video on crisper use. 10min ill never get back.
That’s okay. Lots of other people liked it and downloaded the free printable I provided for them so I’ll leave it up. Pleasing everyone is impossible as much as some of us would like to. Thank you for stopping by dude 😉
