      Thank you. Yes, I always think it's interesting to see what the authors looked like... this chap actually was one of the hardest to find, I think this may be the only known image of him. Which is interesting given how prolific and popular he was in his lifetime

      I agree! And the background illustrations in sepia are perfect to set the mood in the mind’s eye. Also lovely branding!

    Please unearth more of Preston Muddock's tales? He was prolific, but his works are not easy to find today. As to the "complexity" of his prose, it suits his upbringing in Victorian times (born in 1843), and his language is no more complex than, for example, language of Henry James or Dickens. I enjoy his style. He puts us in the scenes with skill.

    I really love falling asleep to old horror stories, and your readings are excellent! “Bite sized“ really suits me, too. If they are longer, they often wake me up. I’m so glad I found your channel… I don’t know what took me so long.
    Many thanks! 🌈💀💕👻

    Loved the story & the reading. I must say, tho, I giggled every time this precise gentleman said the word "poop". Immature, I know, but I'm only 75.

    I skipped listening to these for a bit because I had listened to them all, but checked back today and joy of joys, there were several additions. Ive listened to two already and live them both. Thank you so much for all the entertainment you’ve given me over these last few months.

      Yes, the worst thing is to have no new ones to listen to! Same with Horrorbabble.

    What a terrific story. Start leisurely with the history lesson on gold discovery touching on its effects on human nature and then the pace starts building up to reach the momentum with the murder and finally the cresendo with the death of the murderer. The words used to narrate the sea voyage is so descriptive like "ebony vault". No crime goes unpunished if only we have cognisance of this before we take this path that only leads to damnation.

      You know what is funny? It's psychological. It's the idea that we are imprisoned, not that we really are, just quarantined. I'm the same. I'm elderly and in bed health. Normally I don't get out much, but know I'm going nuts. Nothing has changed so much, just our concept. Nevertheless Holidaze is there. 😊to

    She waited a while! I wonder what the ghost was doing all the while the Jacksons stayed in Australia, but then maybe "sonambulistically commanded to jump into the sea" was more comprehensable a fate to the English public than "sonnambulistically commanded to walk into the bush/approach a kangaroo standing in water" (never look up nature facts about kangaroos. There is nothing that is not horrifying about kangaroos).

      I have to admit this author's style can be hard work and isn't the easiest to narrate, one of the reasons I've not returned to him for a while, although he was hugely popular in his day; I do still have a couple of his detective tales on my possibles list for the future due to the originality of the plot more than for stylistic reasons...

    I love these stories, but these terms are killing me :). My husband was in the Navy and I keep running in and asking him about all these terms. He keeps reminding me that his ship didn't have sails, and masts, lol.

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  3 роки тому +1

      I suppose it didn't have a monkey poop either?

    • @wmnoffaith1
      @wmnoffaith1 3 роки тому

      @@BitesizedAudio No, I did not :) I did actually ask him about this and he looked at me like I was joking. He was able to help with some of the terms though.

    • @tomcurran1538

      I taught for the US Navy and had to learn their archane language. They still say Aye, instead of yes, for example.

    • @wmnoffaith1
      @wmnoffaith1 2 роки тому

      @@tomcurran1538 Well, my husband wasn't an instructor; he may not have been taught the terms. Or, likely as not, he just didn't pay attention. :)

      Written long before TV was invented so a descriptive style set the scene for the reader, & their imagination did the rest otherwise there would be no content to the tale, maybe TV is more suited to you!?
