The speedo adapter is for the specific gear set.I had a ‘79 K15 that came with one. When I got rid of the 1/2 ton axles with 3.08 gears, I only had to remove the adapter for my 3/4 ton axles (4.10 gears) to make my speedo work correctly.
Perhaps bigger tires were installed and the gear reducer was used to compensate? Or speedometer gauge went higher than a typical vehicle .
