Thanks for taking the trip to research these orchids. I have been to Huang Long 20 years ago and only seen the wild strawberry. not this kind. You were lucky to find them! Well. Being a Chinese myself knowing Chinese they will mass planting these and use them to decorating stores, hotels, business. They did the same things to Peacocks, elephants, pandas and tigers. None of those are endanger no more at least not in China. Whoever touch it will get dead penalty. I am not too worry about it. The country is so rich now. Just like another plant: Dalbergia odorifera which is teak wood quality plant. They massive planting them to make million dollar price tag furniture. They will promote this Cypripedium just like the way that they did to Dendrobium. I order one small plant here in the states for $40 when I order them from China they go by the kilo. Whatever they did here in China is working!

Wow I love this. It is amazing to see plants in the wild. I am looking to keep some Cypripedium hybrids for my next project.

Seeing them in the wild in such numbers was a one in a lifetime event. At the time (2013) I had a more flexible schedule, so I was lucky enough to go during the flowering season. I highly recommend starting with Cyp hybrids since they are much easier in general and also flower better than the species. Of the species, any variety of C. parviflorum is good, ditto C. reginae. If you can source some, I also recommend C. formosanum since it is so unique and relatively easy to grow as well. Happy gardening!

Oh that is so gorgeous! Are they being propagated in cultivation to protect their numbers? I wish I could come and scoot around the woods with you.

Yes, this species is being propagated by a number of people including Holger Perner who led this tour. You can read about the Perner's nursery in China at this blog post: botanyboy.org/hengduan-mountains-biotechnologys-nursery-in-huanglong-a-lady-slipper-orchid-bonanza/ and also see the video about the same nursery at: ua-cam.com/video/r8-AALyyBwc/v-deo.html
I highly recommend taking a tour with them sometime, it is amazing to see this part of China!

There are vendors in China (Hengduan Biotech) and the EU that sell plants. They are not cheap however, and take skill to grow well. Thanks for watching and commenting!

it reminds me of Paph. rothschildeanum or phillipenens with its striped dorsal

Yes, I agree, the dorsal coloration is very Paph-like. I hope one day to get back to that region and take some proper video of these rarities.
