    I think in reality, the high table would have never pursued John. First he kills someone because he owed a marker, who then puts a hit out on him to "avenge" the person he was forced to kill with the marker. At that point I would expect the high table to want to take the guy out themselves. It violates every code, even among thieves and assassins. The whole notion of it should be an abomination to the high table.

      I agree. While TECHNICALLY Santino might not have done anything wrong, he SEVERELY abused the rules and that system under them. Worse, he did it to steal a Seat on the High Table. Then, at the end he flees to the NY Continental to apparently hide there from John Wick for years if necessary. That’s NOT what the Continental Hotels are for. If I’d been the High Table, I’d have washed my collective hands of this whole affair at the end of this movie. Seeing as how Santino repeatedly abused the rules, I’d let John Wick go. He’d still be Excommunicato, but have no price on his head. Would have saved the High Table a LOT of trouble! Plus, it would warn any would be usurpers like Santino that abusing the rules would not be rewarded.

      @@DLordSadow Agreed. Santino made a mockery of the rules that the world of the High Table lives by - all for personal gain. We knew that Santino would basically hide in the Continental indefinitely, and because it is Continental grounds, no business can be conducted on it. Technically giving him protection for as long as he was there - but I suspect every manager of the Continental from New York to Casablanca would agree that their singular rule should not be abused in such a manner. Even for someone that has a seat at the High Table. Santino spat on the rules, twisting them in a way so he could never be touched. We understand why John had to break the one rule of the continental lives by, even though it it would have consequences.
      I also agree that the High Table should’ve given him a pass, perhaps, lifting the excommunicado tag in 3 to 6 months, if not immediately, and canceling the contract.

      @DLordSadow @CBunye
      I disagree, not on the merit of morality, but on the merit of practical realism.
      Santino's antics, and John himself, put the High Table in an impossible position. The moment the bullet blessed the carpet of the Continental with Santino's brain matter, the Table had a choice.
      Option A) Let the matter slide. Santino bent and twisted every relevant rule in the book to try and avoid the consequences of his actions, and while everything he did was perfectly legal, there was no honor or nobility in it as well as proving he was an untrustworthy lying snake, and trust is a BIG thing in the John Wick universe.
      Option B) Apply the law in the strictest possible regard.
      Initially, Option A seems the objectively correct choice. The spirit of the law matters more than the letter, especially in John Wick's world. But to the High Table, there was another pressing issue.
      Precedent.
      Santino was... well, he was Santino, but he was ALSO a member of the High Table. An assassin kills a member of the High Table, on Continental grounds, and walks free? Word of that gets round, and a lot of assassins are going to get a lot of ideas. Suddenly, the High Table looks weak, unstable, or, worse than anything else, afraid. It's repeatedly stressed that their authority is unquestionable and absolute, no exceptions. Most likely, had John just cooled his heels and not immediately put one through his forehead, the High Table would have dealt with it in-house and killed Santino themselves for making the High Table look like conniving rules-lawyers.
      But, John killing him forced their hand. Regardless of whether it was right or wrong to punish John, for the sanctity and infallibility of the High Table to be preserved, and, therefore, the safety of the entire system to be preserved, they don't have a choice but to make an example of Santino's killer. Excommunicado, as he broke the rules in the Continental. And the bounty, because if one man gets away with killing one of their own, even if he was the worst of them by far, then ANY assassin with a grudge against the High Table suddenly has a role model. I believe their understanding of the situation is why they didn't immediately punish Winston more severely for not killing John right off the bat, because they knew he was essentially forced to do what he did. But that doesn't change that, for their safety as the top organization in the setting, they HAVE to hunt John like a dog so the rest of the underworld gets one clear message:
      "Come after us and you die."

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Рік тому +26

      @@MartyrisBisclavret Your entire comment is defeated by the point that Santino would have never been in the position to be killed by John if the High Table had taken care of Santino first. John is bound to follow the marker, regardless of who it is. Otherwise the rules would have allowed him to decline. He could have simply called up the High Table, said "Hey he wants me to kill his sister so he can take her seat at the table", and that would have been that for Santino.
      The continentals are not places for one to run and hide. They are a safe haven, but meant primarily for those conducting active business, regardless of any outside conflicts. Santino threatening to stay there in order to skirt being killed, while he himself can send assassins at John all he wants for years on end if need be, is clearly an abuse of the purpose the continental serves. By using the continental in that way only degrades the continentals purpose, making it a target to have its rules violated eventually, which would degrade its purpose as a whole. That would be far more untenable than avenging Santino.
      Imagine for example, two factions in the high table each take up residence in different continentals. They essentially become untouchable by those rules. That would allow for a never ending war where both sides can't actually touch either one...unless they break the rules. That is clearly an untenable position, and just asking for the rules to be broken.
      If anything, John did the High Table a favor by getting rid of Santino for them. He killed to steal a seat at the table. I can't imagine the rest of the table would be happy to have a killer in their presence, who might also kill them in order to completely take control of the High Table.
      They also knew it was finished after Santino was ended. It would have been simpler to was their hands of the whole thing and move on. In fact it would have been more beneficial to them, because with the power vacuum left in Italy, the High Table now controlled what Santino would have. Even some principle doesn't make sense at this point, because of all the principles in John's favor, with both the marker and the abuse of the continentals. John was not some rogue assassin looking to blindly kill.
      And the losses the High Table suffered was definitely too high. He killed probably hundreds of guys. Loyal people who went to their deaths, people who are irreplaceable. The manpower loss alone would be a price too high, just for one man. After all, these aren't just empty goons willing to die for the High Table. They were real people, with lives. It was a job, a serious job. In real life, you wouldn't be that nonchalant with the lives of those working for you, because that alone would erode trust and dedication in those working for the High Table. The idea that you're just cannon fodder for the High Table to waste, would weaken the High Table to the point of collapse. At that point even if they had finally killed John, wasting hundreds of men to do it would still cause the same problem. It wouldn't be a victory or some righteous display of principles.
      Think about all those people protecting the High Table, seeing what John did to all those men, even if they had finally got him. Feeling disposable does not inspire loyalty.

      @@peoplez129 I agree with you on a lot of your points. I'm not saying what the High Table did was the correct decision, the smart decision, or even the most sane decision.
      To address them in order:
      Firstly, John contacts the high Table to rat on Santino, and it's his word against Santino's. All Santino has to say is "I don't know what he's talking about" and John can't PROVE anything. Winston would back him up, 100%, but that doesn't prove anything - just that John told Winston Santino's out to kill his sister and wants to use him to do it. No hard proof, no sell. He never wrote it down or listed it anywhere, just told John, verbally, to go and do it.
      Secondly, Santino has all the power in the exchange. All Santino has to do - and again, it's pretty much a given that he is a lying snake - is say "John is refusing to honor the marker" and John's life is completely forfeit. John actively tries refusing the offer and is lucky to ONLY get his house blown up. If John tries tattling on Santino, that's the perfect excuse Santino needs. "Hey, I only asked him to honor the marker he owes me, and now he's going to go around spreading stories I tried to have him murder my sister." It's established in John Wick 3 that you are automatically sentenced to death if you try to kill your marker's holder - John and Sofia - meaning that John was screwed the minute Santino called in his debts. No matter what method John tried to take to back out, Santino would have just killed him if he refused, point blank, no questions asked, no-one would have questioned it.
      Your remarks about the Continental are 100% accurate, and it would have indeed caused a scandal. But Santino was in the New York Continental for a grand total of maybe 15-20 minutes, depending on how long it takes to cook duck-fat fries. By the time the High Table found out about the whole fiasco, Santino's body was cold. If John had stayed his hand, what most realistically and likely would have happened is that, yes, High Table operatives would have said "we're suspending this rule because it's not meant for this abuse", dragged Santino out by the heels and shot him somewhere nice and quiet. But, of course, John Wick's fatal flaw is his complete inability to NOT kill whatever pisses him off, which is why the whole issue even exists to begin with.
      Did he do the High Table a favor? Absolutely, right again. I doubt any tears were shed for him. But that doesn't change the fact that they can either uphold the law regardless of circumstance, or let the law slide, and if they let the law slide ONCE, who's to say it won't slide TWICE, or thrice, or any number of times? The minute you let extenuating circumstances into an absolute system, the absolute system is no longer absolute. Is that ripe for abuse? 100%. Does it keep things black and white? 100%. Realistically, if a High Table member started abusing these rules, they'd take the time to sort it in-house rather than changing the centuries-old (that's an educated guess) system that's otherwise worked pretty well all round.
      Was it simpler to let John go? Absolutely. Would that have damaged their reputation and control over the underworld? Massively.
      John isn't a rogue assassin, you're absolutely right on that score. But it's not about John Wick, the man. It's John Wick, the legend. The Baba Yaga. The myth who killed the ultimate boogeyman, a member of the High Table, on Continental grounds. EVERYONE knows who John is. And if he gets to walk free after Santino's death, every single person with a grudge against the High Table now has a new inspiration. The entire John Wick system is based on honor and rules. Viggo despite the fact that Iosef is single-handedly responsible for the annihilation of his entire criminal enterprise was bound by honor to avenge him. Sofia can barely stop herself from shooting John on sight and hates the hell out of him for what he's forcing her to put at risk, but she is bound by that same honor to fulfill her marker even though no-one would even know. Even Santino, mockingly, uses the honor system as an excuse to stab John in the back.
      And, unfortunately, your point about the infamous "we have reserves" strategy weakening is proven false by history. Russia. Imperial China. Iran during the Iran-Iraq War with Human-Wave attacks. It is known historical doctrine that if you have the manpower, you use it. Yes, it's just one man -
      "But that, one, man... is John Wick."
      Plus, on top of that, accepting the notion that not every single person under the High Table have "I

    That line right there alone immediately lets you know how bad Santino f'd up when he pulled that move on John.
    Like how do you go to the one man that really scares the hell of out of almost every assassin in that world, then you tell him that you want him to kill your sister because of your egotistical, greedy selfish self. Then once the job is done then you pull a b*tch move on him. Did you actually expect that that man was not going to come after you after what you just did to him, not only that what you just pulled?

Santonio’s sister was apparently going to be put on the high table at the end of the night and John had at least a few days if not a week of prep before hand. So how would Santonio be a member of the high table by the time John was closing in on him? Neither of the siblings were members at the point in time that John killed them. I understand that he would get some privileges by being next in line and soon to be placed, but would he really even have the authority to revoke someone’s membership? Seems a bit off to me

    Santino was arrogant and truly feared John he knew more than likely he’d survive all those he sent to kill him when he set the contract on John. So he like a coward hid in the continental thinking John wouldn’t kill him there, but John did as he got way under his skin. Santino was the kind that many OG would hate to even see etc

    “You stabbed the devil in the back and forced him back into the life he’d just left. You incinerated the priests temple… burned it to the ground, and now that he’s free of the marker, what do you think he’ll do?” Winston goes hard on that line, but he’s got a point. Don’t mess with the bull if you don’t want the horns.

    Fun fact you learn in part 3: It's forbidden for one to harm the person who holds their marker while the marker is still 'active', Santiano didn't want to complete the marker as it would have been against the rule for John to harm him regardless of where he was, the fact that he tried to talk his way out if it shows he was still scared of John.

    • @mandygabisan6109
      @mandygabisan6109 Рік тому +19

      After winston received the Order of Open contract, he facilitated the completion of marker so that Santino can't take advantage of the rule. Also john cohld simply do the revenge, but what didn't anticipated was John Wick ended up killing santino on the Continental, what a writing!
