As Broncos fan when the team got Manning, he was a free agent and the team didn’t give up anything for him. For Russ, the Broncos lost two starters, two top 10 picks and two seconds rounds picks which was too much. Russ is good, but he isn’t Pat who can carry a team. Looking at the drive charts for 2023, I am seeing in 15 out of 34 half-opening drives (both first and second half included), Denver didn't manage to get a first down. Stidham was at QB for 3 of those 15 - so unless I'm hallucinating that means Wilson only managed to lead to Broncos to a first down - A measly first down - on 12 out of 30 half-opening drives. For perspective, Wilson’s productivity last season was nearly identical to Tom Brady’s last season with the Buccaneers… Brady at the age of 45, finished the season 8-9, with 66.8% in completions, 25 touchdowns, 9 Interceptions, and 1 touchdown rushing… Wilson at 35, finished 7-8, completion rate of 66.4%, 26 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns rushing… Interestingly, even TEN years younger than Brady, Wilson is somehow on his last chance to prove himself, beyond some arbitrary redemption… Most people’s assessment of the situation are very skewed compared to Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, and their opinions matter the most… Wilson and the Steelers are going to be alright… 🤔
He was not good the first year, but he was decent last year. Not Maholmes but hardly horrible. And he beat KC. Russ led the NFL in TD passes and had a 66% completion percentage when he was benched. The narrative that he is washed is an odd one. We live in a world where something is said and then repeated over and over again.
You're completely ignoring the part where down the stretch last season Russ looked pretty good even with a so-so offense around him. He did what he was supposed to do and won them games but Coach Payton (to nobody's surprise) is a bit of a difficult personality to work with and the two of them kept clashing about how to approach things to the point where Payton basically said "Screw you, I'm the coach, you're out". That was not on Russ in any way whatsoever. Say whatever you want about him, corny etc. he's nowhere near as bad on the field as some people make him out to be.
@@PatriotWatchUSA The playcalling in Denver was a complete personnel mismatch throughout his entire tenure, neither of his top two receivers had secure ballhandling, the run game was close to non-existent due to Javonte Williams getting injured early on, the offensive line didn't do much to help Russ biggest problems either which is holding on to the ball for too long. meanwhile Pittsburgh has consistently upgraded their O-line despite not even knowing who their QB will be in the past few years, their run game is a a deadly 1-2 combo that's only gonna get better with a run heavy offensive play caller as opposed to the horrendous usage under Matt Canada. Arthur Smith is a flawed HC but he knows what he's doing as an OC and is gonna maximize their run game as well as the quick game with RPOs and play action, which again were non-existent under Matt Canada before, so again the new Steelers are not the old Steelers. George Pickens is a better WR1 than either of the guys Russ had in Denver plus they seem poised to trade for Brandon Aiyuk and drafted Roman Wilson as a presumed WR3. He also won't even have to overperform like before because the Steelers D won't let another team score 70+ points on them in a single game, have one of the nastier D-lines in the league with a top 3 pass rusher and while their secondary does have clear weaknesses, it also boasts guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick and they did plenty to try and improve it in the past little over a year worth of time. meanwhile what does Denver have going for it? bottom 5 defense in the league in most categories (with an average of 24ppg allowed even when not calculating in the Miami game, meanwhile their offense produced an average 21ppg which was good but just never enough because of the lack of a functioning defense), abusive HC with a horrible locker room presence, traded away plenty of guys without a clear plan to replace them and despite having 2 veterans on roster who started games last year, they seem to look towards a rookie to fix the hole that Russ left. Pittsburgh > Denver every single day of the week if I'm an NFL QB.

Here’s the best case scenario. Pittsburgh holds on to Justin Fields, they trade for Mitch Trubisky and in 3 years they get Caleb Williams. Then, they will have the 3 worst quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. Omar Khan is truly brilliant. He thinks the Bears can draft quarterbacks.
Russell blew it in Denver. Playing for Sean Peyton, he had a chance to show the world that he could play at a superstar level based solely on his superior brain. He could have turned his brain into a supercomputer and processed enormous amounts of information in milliseconds, like Brady, Manning, Brees, and Mahomes. But instead of basing his game on the cerebral aspect, he continued to just play the same type of instinctive, athletic football that he's always played. He refused to become an intellectual demi-god of a QB. He did nothing at all to show me that he is in the very top percentile of quarterback IQ.

Russ’s problem is that he’s no longer as athletic as he was. Once upon a time, he could scramble around, hold onto the ball for a long time, move out of the pocket so he can actually see the field, and chuck a bomb… those days are long gone. Now he’s just a short qb who can’t throw over the middle of the field, can’t escape the pass rush, and holds the ball too long. He’ll either throw a check down to rbs or toss a deep pass and pray his receivers bail him out. That’s his entire game at this point.

Dak, Hurts, Purdy, Carr, and Cousins were all non first round picks who are currently starters and have made at least one pro bowl FWIW.

Looking at the drive charts for 2023, I am seeing in 15 out of 34 half-opening drives (both first and second half included), Denver didn't manage to get a first down. Stidham was at QB for 3 of those 15 - so unless I'm hallucinating that means Wilson only managed to lead to Broncos to a first down - A measly first down - on 12 out of 30 half-opening drives.

His circumstances in Denver were a bit convoluted to say the least. For perspective, Wilson’s productivity last season was nearly identical to Tom Brady’s last season with the Buccaneers…
Brady at the age of 45, finished the season 8-9, with 66.8% in completions, 25 touchdowns, 9 Interceptions, and 1 touchdown rushing… Wilson at 35, finished 7-8, completion rate of 66.4%, 26 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns rushing…
Interestingly, even TEN years younger than Brady, Wilson is somehow on his last chance to prove himself, beyond some arbitrary redemption… Most people’s assessment of the situation are very skewed compared to Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, and their opinions matter the most…

You're completely ignoring the part where down the stretch last season Russ looked pretty good even with a so-so offense around him. He did what he was supposed to do and won them games but Coach Payton (to nobody's surprise) is a bit of a difficult personality to work with and the two of them kept clashing about how to approach things to the point where Payton basically said "Screw you, I'm the coach, you're out". That was not on Russ in any way whatsoever. Say whatever you want about him, corny etc. he's nowhere near as bad on the field as some people make him out to be.
He had a better offense with Denver than he will with the Steelers this year.
@@PatriotWatchUSA The playcalling in Denver was a complete personnel mismatch throughout his entire tenure, neither of his top two receivers had secure ballhandling, the run game was close to non-existent due to Javonte Williams getting injured early on, the offensive line didn't do much to help Russ biggest problems either which is holding on to the ball for too long. meanwhile Pittsburgh has consistently upgraded their O-line despite not even knowing who their QB will be in the past few years, their run game is a a deadly 1-2 combo that's only gonna get better with a run heavy offensive play caller as opposed to the horrendous usage under Matt Canada. Arthur Smith is a flawed HC but he knows what he's doing as an OC and is gonna maximize their run game as well as the quick game with RPOs and play action, which again were non-existent under Matt Canada before, so again the new Steelers are not the old Steelers. George Pickens is a better WR1 than either of the guys Russ had in Denver plus they seem poised to trade for Brandon Aiyuk and drafted Roman Wilson as a presumed WR3. He also won't even have to overperform like before because the Steelers D won't let another team score 70+ points on them in a single game, have one of the nastier D-lines in the league with a top 3 pass rusher and while their secondary does have clear weaknesses, it also boasts guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick and they did plenty to try and improve it in the past little over a year worth of time. meanwhile what does Denver have going for it? bottom 5 defense in the league in most categories (with an average of 24ppg allowed even when not calculating in the Miami game, meanwhile their offense produced an average 21ppg which was good but just never enough because of the lack of a functioning defense), abusive HC with a horrible locker room presence, traded away plenty of guys without a clear plan to replace them and despite having 2 veterans on roster who started games last year, they seem to look towards a rookie to fix the hole that Russ left. Pittsburgh > Denver every single day of the week if I'm an NFL QB.

Since the rules were changed and continue to be changed, it's hard to make up points once you fall behind. You currently have the 28th ranked offense which tells me you will fail this year. Here’s the best case scenario. Pittsburgh holds on to Justin Fields, they trade for Mitch Trubisky and in 3 years they get Caleb Williams. Then, they will have the 3 worst quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. Omar Khan is truly brilliant. He thinks the Bears can draft quarterbacks.
Russell blew it in Denver. Playing for Sean Peyton, he had a chance to show the world that he could play at a superstar level based solely on his superior brain. He could have turned his brain into a supercomputer and processed enormous amounts of information in milliseconds, like Brady, Manning, Brees, and Mahomes. But instead of basing his game on the cerebral aspect, he continued to just play the same type of instinctive, athletic football that he's always played. He refused to become an intellectual demi-god of a QB. He did nothing at all to show me that he is in the very top percentile of quarterback IQ.

Russ’s problem is that he’s no longer as athletic as he was. Once upon a time, he could scramble around, hold onto the ball for a long time, move out of the pocket so he can actually see the field, and chuck a bomb… those days are long gone. Now he’s just a short qb who can’t throw over the middle of the field, can’t escape the pass rush, and holds the ball too long. He’ll either throw a check down to rbs or toss a deep pass and pray his receivers bail him out. That’s his entire game at this point.
Rich Eisen has s wrong in his narrative. F*ck Denver! And the Broncos tried to keep him for the upcoming season. He’d still be there if he had agreed to defer his injury guarantee.

I wasn't a fan of the signing but I'm cautiously optimistic Russ can succeed in Pittsburgh. Low risk move and it would be almost impossible for him to be worse than what we've had the last two years.

It won't be with Wilson there. Denver had a top 10 line last year. Wilson has made every line look bad for his career. I don't know how anyone can watch him play and not see how much he holds that ball.
If Wilson plays all 17 games, the Steelers o line is guaranteed to give up 50+ sacks.

A smart coaching staff will evaluate what he still excels at and build around it. The one question mark is if Wilson still has enough quickness to pull of his squirrel plays.
