yeah looking at the pic i messed up on dimensions im gunna raise it all up a tad. hit a bit more middley of it. will also alleviate the rocking, these are in no means a perfect design but you know how it is, warts and all add to the fondness.! the best is the one that is just good enough! so yeah raise beater bar up about 20cm and boom bish bosh bash mr moustache.
Mr. Moustache. That can only be me. I approve.
Good move on the beaters, I built a set of tubular bells years ago back in high school and found that hitting them at different spots (nodes antinodes and all that wash) gave you much more pleasant sounds. I love the work you're doing with the channel, by the way. Seeing the history preserved and on display is awesome. If I'm ever in the UK I'll be sure to pay a visit!
The two we had as a doorbell, was struck between the strings almost....🙂
Futurama cover when?
What is a futurama? Will do if knew what it was!
Aaah just checked cartoooon.
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER The theme song is based on the Fatboy Slim remix of Pierre Henry's Psyche Rock
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER What... isn't Futurama well-known among such fine gentlemen of our age? :)
😂
If this doesn't play 'carol of the bells' on Christmas then there's something seriously wrong. 😄
Probability of that = 99.9997%. 6 sigma certainty.
On a set of concert tubular bells the tubes slide through a set of holes (usually a board with staggered holes) each hole has felt glued around it but theres still plenty of space for the bell to ring freely. What this does however is only allow the bell to swing so far before it is restrained. This would resolve your errant bell tapping.
Also concert tubes have a pedal which like the vibes allows you to deaden the bells on demand. I imagine a smart individual could come up with a relay based system to individually deaden a single tube and midify it! 😅
Might be worth trying to move the beaters higher up. Should reduce the swinging
I notice there is quite a bit of swinging. The picture of the original show that the beaters were roughy a foot higher, probably reducing that swinging. Is there any particular reason why you choose to put them lower?
messed up measurement. spent last 48 hours building it didnt notice till looking back
I remember our percussion guy playing the tubular bells on or near the top rim of the tube, maybe that will improve the sound?
The mallets should be hitting on the node of the wavelength of the oscillator for max sustain and tonal clarity.
I copied the dimensions on the images of
It's fitment prior. Whether he knew the node or not. Fate decides
What's next? Slightly distorted guitar, or mandolin?😂 narrated by John Cleese
gotta go with the original Viv Stanshall
Mike Oldfield _he_ had no computer, Mum.
Only a Grand Piano, Reed and Pipe Organ, Glockenspiel,Bass Guitar, Double Speed Guitar, two slightly Distorted Guitars, Mandolin, Spanish and Acoustic Guitar and some Tubular Bells.
At least until he got himself a fairlight 😂
Are they all being hit in the optimal spot? I thought that was quite important for how they sound
Also what I thought, they sound wildly different from each other.
We join you now with another episode of 🫨🌌✴️GAMELAN IN SPACE 🚀
If you want to tune them, there is a Excell calculator on how long they should be, when you take the diameter, material and inner hole diameters, and also the hole where you hang them has to be at 22,7% of the end, there the resonance point is always, no matter what length. But probably is not a tubular bell, but a glockenspiel, no? Anyway, I feel like Sam, all at once, and then again, noting is certain!!! Go, you nutty professor!!! Regards from Belgium, or is it?
They sound in tune enough to me :) cheers tho!
I just want to say how much I love the dedication to keeping the spirit of the former owner present, from the colouring, the sign, and down to copying the design best as you can.
your american accent is funny
The rocking back and forth is not only causing extra notes but also skipped notes. Maybe mount the beaters higher up where the rocking movements aren't as extreme, it will alter the sound a bit but give much more consistent articulation. Commercial tubular bells are actually played at the top anyway. They also have some sort of guard at the height where the beaters are attached now. Somehow they manage for it to only slightly dampen the sound.
The A frame bits are called gussets.
at least it sounds horrible at 8:17 looking forward to hear it once its running perfectly :)
Sounds nice already
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER It is good that I have proof of melodic deficiency, 5 years of music school in my youth and still not able of playing a instrument or keeping rhythm!
Uneducated idea: keep the bells from swinging out of control by adding rubber stoppers between them right at their second node to minimize interference
I think you should put the beaters a bit up higher.
Read the pinned comment :)
@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER - If the hammers were positioned nearer the top of the tubes they would swing less when struck. 👍
I guess it was too predictable, but no Mike Oldfield? Seems like you pretty much have everything needed to play Tubular Bells.
Thank you for playing Tubular Bells. That thought was bouncing around my head the whole time.
This video was BRISKLY PACED! Ideal editing.
Totally tubular! Now you need to invite Mike Oldfield so he can sign off on that.
*plays the not-bell part on the bells* 8:21
another fabulous bit of history saved, well done Sam. What you're doing saving these British eccentrics life works is just fab, and mate, you made me chuckle (and rewind) when you said "from the hardware store" in that voice, seriously silly maaaaaan, keep up the fantastic work.
This is kind of brilliant. And it's neat to see not only some musical history relevant to your part of the world being preserved, but kept alive with new life. That museum sounds like a neat place to go to.
4:55 "Then you do it again" is the overarching theme of this channel.
Also, "sensually cutting" made me laugh.
Lol, it's so strange. 2020: Spotify recommended a weird album with a funny cover: old mackintosh with eyes. The music is really cool. 2024: I moved to the UK, and can check this tubular thing live even before the video on this channel release. What a time to be alive. Thanks for the museum, it's super awesome, I'll come back to play with all the knobs and keys again!
Hey Sam! Do you offer a service where you can email in your Midi files, and then you charge X amount of quids ££ per bar to record all that Midied up electro-mechanical gear?
fudging love it sam, delightfully, endearingly bonkers 😜
Have you thought of wiring them to te visitor counter? Too bad the westminster chime has already been played hahah
That vibraphone is still my favorite, it reminds me for some reason of The Tales of Moss and Fern (Pohádky z mechu a kapradí). Holy wow, wait I think it was the episode about that lady that felt constantly too hot. There was this ethereal sound there somewhere I think. Mind you I have no idea how brain makes that connection, I haven't seen that cartoon in at least 20 years... I wonder how they made the soundtrack to that cartoon.
I used to work with an engineer at the BBC who had 2 sheds, I used to call him 2 sheds after the Monty Python character Arthur 2 Sheds Jackson. Very talented engineer, so I suspect there was some wisdom in him having 2 sheds. He lived in Preston though, so not sure how wise he was.
Woah. 😮 I get these weird XMas vibes when I hear those bells. 😊
How about the theme song from The Falcon and the Snowman?
see if you can link your chime to Mobel and some paddles. This could be great fun for bell ringers.
You’re a mad genius!
Reminds of the Pat Methenys Orchestration project. If you can do a video creating a midi guitar or keyboard that sampled real instruments in real time that would be pandemonium
Would it be appropriate to add some way to keep the bells from balancing too far away from their hammer's impact point?
Maybe something like a loosely set string a the bottom of each bell?
I built a pentatonic wind chime out of an old aluminum lawn chair. I found an online chart that gives tube length and hang points. I think it really helps to not hang them from the very top. The sustain is much longer.
How about changing the heads to balsa wood? Soft but still wood so sound between wood and felt.... Maybe..❤
Sorry.. Comment on the wrong video.. This was awesome..🙃
I think the beaters are hitting a bit hard causing the tubes to swing
With the coil energised there should be a small gap between beater and tube, the beater should bounce when operated, much like a piano hammer.
I was on holiday in Norfolk and visited Caister Castle, there they have a large cinema organ and I was thinking I wonder what Sam would do with that 😂
The beaters with nothing to beat made me smile. Not sure why. 😊
Is the "then you do it again, then you do it again, then you do it again!" in the sample pack on your patreon?
my fave vid of yrs in a long time, really cool. i love how diy the bells are, shortcomings and all. i guess fast tempo is a problem too because the bells will still be swinging as they receive the next note? your whole midi to solenoid scheme is so rad
So beautiful, how ingenious. I love this.
You need to move the mallets up so they don’t have so much effect on the movement of the bells for better timing
i love this channel. firm handshakes from across the pond.
Curved arms for the beaters might mean you don't need to fully disassemble it.
Also possibly stagger the bells so that the outer one is set more to the right of the inner one.
Anyone else notice the 3rd from bottom bar is off the chrsoglott at 7:45 ?
you can play tubular bells and christmas songs on the organ
Thats my mums 80's doorbell😂
2:41 the american accent on "the hardware store" 😂😂😂❤
Oh no! Sam summoned Linda Blair!
All the bells - check
All the whistles - ?
S.L.A.C = Sams Love And Care :)
Awesome work Sam as always
psyche rock! psyche rock!
Fender precision bass
Quality, fair play.
Make me feel Tinguelly
Freak awesome..🤓
I see that under the "general midi" standard that tubular bells are number 15, so why choose 8 for these which is "clavinet", just thinking making these compatible with an existing numbering scheme might give some advantages?
Cus I'm using the sam midi standard. It's the 8th thing I've made for this setup.
did you manage to repair the recorder for the speakers that had one blown up channel?
Still waiting for the replacement pcb from thomann
Very cool!

Do you have enough tubular bells to actually play "Tubular Bells"?
Did you watch the video
-1ea
So disapointing he did not play tubular bells on it i mean come on mike oldfield made the best songs ❤❤❤
Did you not watch the video?
Great video as usual. One other thing the beaters do is push the tubes instead of tap them, don't know if that can be fixed.
yeah thats down to the player
Amazing, You're like a real life version of Doc Brown from back to the future
Definitely play headwigs theme!
What's that?
Geni
somehow i think of Pink Floyd... don' t know why
"I know a room of musical tunes
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork
Let's go into the other room and make them work."
long dong copper rides again!
In Long copper we can rely
Niiiiiiice! ^_^
5:27 -> 8:36 ... and the fire exit sign has disappeared ;-)
Moved to the left check again
I put it there for fire risk assessment recently when openning that back space up. I figured moving it to the left would hurt. Still visible
Need to hear Tubular Bells on the Tubular Bells
Long dong 😂
Long dong silver
love that !
Me too..
Dem vibes be tuning my body to the right frequency, dem bells is healin my soul. Why don't Churches be ringing dem bellz no mo?
I feel like you're the parallel universe version of me, but with an attention span and funding.
