How to add TEXTURE in Adobe Fresco : Riso Print Aesthetic
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 вер 2022
- In this video I demonstrate how I give my illustrations a riso print aesthetic.
Risograph printing is sort of like a mix between screen printing and a photocopier. Ink is pushed through a stencil on an ink drum. Multi-colored prints are made by switching out drums and then printing over the previous colors. Because of this process the amount of printed colors is usually limited.
BUTT you can still get lots of color variation with limited colors because Risograph ink is translucent. Colors can be overprinted to create new ones. You can also use any combination of tints to produce even more variation. In the drawing I'll be using for this demo I used just 3 colors. Pretty wild huh??
After watching this video you'll be ready to make your drawings have that vintage riso print look. In the demonstration, I'll be working in Adobe Fresco, but the process is nearly the same in Procreate, or even Photoshop.
🖌 For the best results and most options you'll want to use the RetroSupply Co Risograph brushes:
• Photoshop/Adobe Fresco brushes: bit.ly/3fmtIiW
• Procreate brushes: bit.ly/3DWZTjo
That said, you could still make it work for the most part with some other textured brushes. There's some default brushes in both Procreate and Fresco that could get your similar results.
My style is very line-based so my process might be a little different if your's isn't but I think you'll still be able to follow along and adjust as needed.
Looking for some paper texture to up the retro vibes even more?

This video has more information that most of the skillshare courses I've watched, thanks for going through the whole process. I bought the brushes a while ago, but didn't really know how to use them because the riso work flow is so different and I couldn't really find anything on it, so thanks! Also, I didn't even know about the cool magic wand feature.
Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful!
Good audio and it's all in focus? I really stepped my game up 🤣
Wonderful demonstration Chris, I worked in the silk screen printing trade in the 1970’s… and it was great to watch how you did that all digitally rather than manually. We have come a long way!! Ohh I got Fresco after watching some of your videos and now thinking about the Riso brushes. I do cartooning and am keen to try Riso on my zine making projects. ❤❤ thanks heaps!
Thank you! I used to do a lot of screen printing when I was in art school and then after that I had converted a closet into a makeshift darkroom for exposing screens.
The riso brushes are my favorite, I knew they’d be in my Retro Supply Co pack when they asked me to create it. Just a heads up they have a 4th of July sale going on with 40% off.
Finally a video that actually explains how to use them. I knew there was more to it than just using them as a texture brush. Thank you.
Happy to help!
This is so in-depth and nicely produced. Thanks for digging so deep into the process, and thanks for showing how you use the RetroSupply risograph brushes!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Fantastic! Will definitely be trying this out! Thanks for taking the time. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Dan!
This is by far the BEST risograph process video I’ve seen. 💕 Thank you SO much for sharing this helpful (and beautiful) resource! 🙏🏻 Now I can finally use my riso brushes! 🎉

You’re slowly making me reconsider fresco 🤔. Awesome vids, subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
It's really a great video
Thank you!
This was a big inspiration and I will definitely try it out! Thx s lot for your cool content. Aaaand big talent anyways.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!!
You're a fresco wizard.
Hah thanks! I do spend an awful lot of time using it.
So I just rewatched this after 2 months of playing with fresco a bunch. This vid makes me understand fresco a lot better. You tha man Chris.
Well, that was educational. I make my living as a graphic artist and had never heard the word Risograph before. LOL But this was a great tutorial. I have to give this a try.
Glad you liked it! Risograph is definitely old technology that’s just having a bit of a revival as a result of its retro aesthetic.
Great video! I was in doubt wether to buy this set and this made me absolutely buy it :)
Would be awesome if you would have some linework drawing that people could color in to practice/ follow along before drawing stuff themselves,.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! That’s a good idea regarding the linework. Maybe I’ll do another video with this and their new automated riso print set.
This is briliant, thank you for the tutorial. I will try it on some text that I created. I have the (Risograph Brush and Texture Kit for Photoshop - Photoshop Version), pack and I saw that there is (Risograph Print Pack for Photoshop), i was wondering if there is a difference between the two - Is the Print Pack one for Photos while this one is for illustrations?
Photoshop users: skip from 4:00 to 19:43. Go directly to your color channels and export individual colour channels as layer or PNG. Group all layers in a folder, slap a channel mask with the brush texture on it.
Takes around 5 minutes. 👍🏽
Definitely could speed some of it up, you just would need to do it separately for each color as use need a different brush texture to get the overlay to look authentic. You also will not be able to do any of the fine tuning with different brush coverages to adjust color mixing.
@@chris-piascik Photoshop has individual layer masking, which you can absolutely fine tune with selective range and brushes. I meant to keep this comment short.
But your work is awesome nonetheless.
Just my point of view as someone who had started using Photoshop since the late 1990s. These days Photoshop is making it a lot easier for users to do what we used to do manually. Hence some of the old school workaround techniques have been forgotten. But they're really useful one way or another.
I’ve been debating on whether I wanted to spend the money on these brushes. I’ve had FOMO so bad.
Now, after watching this, I have KIMO - I Know I’m Missing Out.
Grabbing them now.
Haha well I’m sure you’ll have fun with them!
Hi Chris, after all this great tutorial and work, is this cool for inkjet printing or the riso effect fades out? Thanks, Manuel.
Thanks! I’ve had good results printing this on my epson 15000 inkjet printer.
If I have all the colours refrenced (3 colours turned into 6 colours) can I just use a single colour instead of layering?
Would you by chance have any tips on how to emulate stuff from.the retro supply company. Brushes textures etc.
Like making your own brushes? That’s all magic to me, ha. I’ve never had good results trying to make my own.
would it make more sense to drop in solids with a paint bucket, isolate areas for tints and then add a texture map overall to recreate the riso effect, including the outline layer? just thinking the hand filling looks like it takes a lot of time.
You’re not wrong. Sometimes I do it that way. When I want more variation in tone this way is easier for me. Sometimes I do a lot of things the hard way it seems, ha
Hey! Great video, thank you. Did you duplicate the brushes to make color 1 2 and 3? My brush pack didn't come that way.
Thank you! Hmm, you should have 3 versions. It talks about them in the PDF that came with the brushes. Does your's have that?
@@chris-piascik hey thanks for getting back to me- mine doesn't, and I don't see any mention of that in my PDF user guide- or in their demo www.retrosupply.co/pages/risograph-procreate-coloring-in-layers - I'm going to keep digging to get to the bottom of it!
I'm sorry its over a year ago, but maybe you are still wondering? my pack didn't come with 3 versions for each brush either, but I'm guessing it's because it is not the photoshop version, but the procreate version. I'm also wondering if its at all needed for procreate, since the brushes never look the same anyway, there might be some kind of grain variation/ jitter function in procreate that is not in photoshop? I have no idea.
Same😢
Hey Chris, Great talk! Had a question about Retro Supply brrushes. They have brushes for photoshop and Illustrator. Which brushes work with Fresco? They have Photoshop and Illustrator versions. Thanks for your advice, Michael
Thanks Michael! Fresco uses Photoshop brushes.
@@chris-piascik Thanks for your reply Chris! Just wanted to clarify something. What if you are using the vector brushes in Fresco. Would you still be using photoshop brushes from Retro Supply or would I need their illustrator brushes? Thanks, Michael
@@michaelzarifes8395 unfortunately you can’t use illustrator vector brushes in Fresco as far as I know.
@@chris-piascik Hey Chris, thanks for clarifying that!
Good talk
😂
love this! ..can this process be achieved using Illustrator?
Thanks! Unfortunately these brushes don’t work in Illustrator.
Good Day Chris. Once I download the RISO set on my laptop will they show up on my iPad in Fresco? Or is there anothert step that I need to do on the iPad?
You’ll need to import them into Fresco. It’s pretty straightforward, you just need them saved somewhere you have access to from your iPad. When in fresco you tap add brushes in your brush menu and then find the file
@@chris-piascik Thank you :)
Im a newbie to this stuff, so this might be a silly question. If you were to print this out, would all the texture/grain and details be retained? I would like to learn to dupe printing riso, not just for on screen designs. Thanks :)
Not silly at all. If you riso printed this you would definitely get the texture, plus a bit more from the actual printing.
If I used a regular printer instead of riso printer, would the texture be retained as well? Thanks!@@chris-piascik
"Riso-nable to work with!"
Lol
where would I find RISCO brushes he's talking about?
www.retrosupply.co/?rfsn=6814948.e3561c
"There's some default brushes in both Procreate and Fresco that could get your similar results." Which brushes do you suggest?
In Procreate you can try some of the brushes found under "Texture" or maybe "Spraypaint". In Fresco there's a lot of options since you'll have access to all of Kyle Webster's brushes. Maybe check out the dry media set, or the Gouache set, honestly there's great texture brushes in most of his seasonal sets too.
Why didn’t you just make selections on the line layer and switch to the color layer to quickly fill in areas?
Looks like you started to halfway through 😅
🤷♂️ whoops
Idk if Adobe changed something... but I need help finding lock transparency. It is no longer a layer option. Googling, they say it is in the fill setting, but the fill doesn't have a settings. Now, I regret using Adobe all over again.
It’s still there in the layer setting. I am actually using it right now. The only reason it wouldn’t work is if you’re using a vector layer because vector art doesn’t work that way.
@@chris-piascik Thank you! I just realized I used a vector brush. I guess I will be re-doing my line work. I thought I was going crazy. I was like, the button was there! Everyone says it's there. Sometimes, the answer is staring you in the face. I appreciate your help.
@@AJames1106 you can just convert your vector layer to a pixel layer instead of redoing it.
@@chris-piascik I found that after I posted this comment.
I’ve used procreate since 2019 and switching has been a little rough. But your videos have been very helpful.
Add noise
Yeah?
